Hippo-Foxa2 signaling pathway plays a role in peripheral lung maturation and surfactant homeostasis

<P>Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), which is induced by insufficient production of surfactant, is the leading cause of mortality in preterm babies. Although several transcription factors are known to be involved in surfactant protein expression, the molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways upstream of these transcription factors have remained elusive. Here, using mammalian Hippo kinases (Mst1/2, mammalian sterile 20-like kinase 1/2) conditional knockout mice, we demonstrate that Mst1/2 kinases are critical for orchestration of transcription factors involved in surfactant protein homeostasis and prevention of RDS. Mice lacking Mst1/2 in the respiratory epithelium exhibited perinatal mortality with respiratory failure and their lungs contained fewer type I pneumocytes and more immature type II pneumocytes lacking microvilli, lamellar bodies, and surfactant protein expression, pointing to peripheral lung immaturity and RDS. In contrast to previous findings of YAP (Yes-associated protein)-mediated canonical Hippo signaling in the liver and intestine, loss of Mst1/2 kinases induced the defects in pneumocyte differentiation independently of YAP hyperactivity. We instead found that Mst1/2 kinases stabilized and phosphorylated the transcription factor Foxa2 (forkhead box A2), which regulates pneumocyte maturation and surfactant protein expression. Taken together, our results suggest that the mammalian Hippo kinases play crucial roles in surfactant homeostasis and coordination of peripheral lung differentiation through regulation of Foxa2 rather than of YAP.</P>

<P>An enzyme-mimetic nanoparticle-based point of care bioassay device is developed for rapid and sensitive detection of analytes. Digital images acquired by smart cellular phones allow quantifying the amounts of analytes. Using this new device, quantitative analysis of liquid sample is performed within 15 min with an order of magnitude enhancement of sensitivity compared with conventional Au nanoparticle-based devices.</P>

<P>Electrospun and alcohol‐dispersed polystyrene‐poly(styreneco‐maleic anhydride) (PS‐PSMA) nanofibers, which allow for facile conjugation of antibodies, are used as an innovative cell isolation/enrichment and support/release platform. As reported by Kyung‐Mi Lee, Jungbae Kim, and co‐workers on page 4448, this work opens up the potential for an innovative immune cell therapy in which specific immune cells are isolated by antibody‐conjugated nanofibers and are directly delivered to the target sites under the controlled and sustained release of immune cells via in vivo activation. </P>
High School Students’ Perception Related to Forest Healing Programs

본 연구는 학업스트레스가 높은 일반계 고등학교 학생을 대상으로 이루어진 조사연구로 고등학생 산림치유 프로그램 개발에 기초 자료를 제공하고자 시행하였다. 수집된 자료는 빈도분석, t-test, ANOVA, 상관분석을 실시하였다. 응답자는 총 144명으로 학생들의 대부분이 보통이상의 스트레스를 받고 있는 것으로 나타났고, 특히 학업성취도가 ‘하’에 속하는 학생들이 가장 심한 스트레스를 받고 있었다. 숲의 치유효과에 대한 인식은 대체적으로 긍정적인 반응을 보였으나, 숲 관련 동아리나 활동에 적극적으로 참여하고자 하는 의지는 그에 비해 상대적으로 낮았다. 산림치유 프로그램에 대한 참여의지는 생명존중의식이 높을수록, 숲치유 효과에 대해 긍정적으로 생각할수록 높아지는 경향이 발견되었지만 약한 상관관계라 할 수 있다. 어떤 산림치유 활동에 참여하고 싶은가에 대한 청소년들의 답변은 산길 걷기가 가장 많았고, 숲속 레크리에이션, 동식물 관찰 및 채집, 숲속 명상이 그 뒤를 따랐다. 선호활동에 있어서는 남녀별 차이가 분명히 존재하였다. 산림활동이 꺼려지는 이유로는 ‘벌레나 들짐승이 싫어서’라고 답한 학생이 과반 이상을 차지했으며 특히 여학생의 경우 대부분 해당되었다. 앞으로는 청소년들이 선호하는 산림활동을 남녀 학생별로 적극 반영하고, 불편함을 유발하는 요소를 최대한 줄이려는 노력이 필요하다. The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for the development of forest healing program for high school students through research on general-education high school students with high academic stress. The collected data were analyzed by frequency analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and correlation analysis. The total number of participants was 144, whose stress level was moderate or even higher. In particular, students with “low” academic achievement were the ones who were stressed out most. The study found that high school students had generally positive perception of the healing effects of forests but relatively low willingness to participate actively in forestrelated clubs and activities. Although there was a trend where the higher their respect for life was and the more positively they thought about the healing effects of forests, the more willing they were to participate, it is a relatively weak correlation. The most popular answer to the question which forest activities they would like to participate was hiking, followed by forest recreational activities, observing and collecting animals and plants, and forest meditation. Boys and girls showed a difference in which activities they preferred. Asked of the reasons they avoid forest activities, a majority of students said “because I don’t like bugs and wild animals.” For girls, almost all the respondents chose that option. For forest programs helpful for teenagers to become popular and widespread, the programs should consist mainly of activities preferred by teenagers while minimizing possible inconvenient factors.
Differences in Recognition of Child Labor: The International Community vs North Korea

Since 1959, child mass mobilization (such as planting trees, participation in farming) has been carried out regularly in North Korea. The international community recommends that North Korea’s child mass mobilization is should be abolished. Because it is a child exploitation and forced labor. However, North Korea argues that it is not the child exploitation but an educational method for its educational goals. North Korea also emphasizes that its domestic law prohibits the child labor. In this article, I would like to analyze what the North Korean child mass mobilization means. The first step is to understand the actual situation of child mass mobilization in North Korean schools through North Korean materials and interviews with North Korean defectors. The next step is to find out its meaning according to the definition of the ILO and North Korea authority’s child labor.

<P> Geotourism is one among many types of ecotourism or nature tourism. Cave tourism within geotourism has gained popularity in Korea. The study's objectives include cave tourists' characteristics, segmenting them according to motivation factors, and finally identifying who they are. The sample population for this research consisted of tourists who have visited the Hwansun Cave in Samchuk City. Among a total of 547 questionnaires distributed, 537 questionnaires were used for further data analyses. On the basis of cluster analysis using the motivation factors, cluster 1 was named an “escape-seeking group”, cluster 2 was termed a “knowledge- and novelty-seeking group”, cluster 3 was called a “novelty-seeking group” and cluster 4 was termed a “socialization group”. Differences in socio-demographic variables, beliefs about cave tourism resources, preferred cave tourism products, satisfaction with this tour, willingness to participate in another cave tour and belief in the value of cave tourism resources were found among the four clusters. The study's findings were expected to be helpful in understanding who they are.</P>

<P>Polyelectrolyte microcapsules represent versatile stimuli-responsive structures that enable the encapsulation, protection, and release of active agents. Their conventional preparation methods, however, tend to be time-consuming, yield low encapsulation efficiency, and seldom allow for the dual incorporation of hydrophilic and hydrophobic materials, limiting their widespread utilization. In this work, we present a method to fabricate stimuli-responsive polyelectrolyte microcapsules in one step based on nanoscale interfacial complexation in emulsions (NICE) followed by spontaneous droplet hatching. NICE microcapsules can incorporate both hydrophilic and hydrophobic materials and also can be induced to trigger the release of encapsulated materials by changes in the solution pH or ionic strength. We also show that NICE microcapsules can be functionalized with nanomaterials to exhibit useful functionality, such as response to a magnetic field and disassembly in response to light. NICE represents a potentially transformative method to prepare multifunctional nanoengineered polyelectrolyte microcapsules for various applications such as drug delivery and cell mimicry.</P>
