Background/Aims: Cancer is seen as one of the most important health problems of our time. In the world and in our country, the most common death cause after cardiovascular diseases in the order of diseases that result in death is cancer. This descriptive, cross-sectional study is done in order to determine the relationship between fatigue and social support levels of cancer patients. Methods: Research was carried out in Cukurova University Hospital in Adana, which is located in the south of Turkey, between December 2014 and December 2015. Data were collected by interview form prepared by the researcher, Piper Fatigue Scale and Social Support Patient Form. Data was analyzed by percentile, mean, independent t test, one-way analysis of variance, correlation and multiple regression. Results: The average score of Social Support Patient Form is 131.1 ± 15.5, and Piper Fatigue Scale total score mean of the participants is 5.8 ± 2.4. A low level of negative correlation was found between the social support to cancer patients scale emotional support subdimension and the Piper Fatigue Scale affective subdimension. Conclusions: As a result of the research, it was seen that the level of fatigue of the participants had moderate and level of perceived social support was positive. The age, marital status, and education status of the participants do not affect the fatigue and social support levels.
The Relationship between Presbycusis and Mastoid Pneumatization

Presbycusis is defined as the natural hearing loss accompanying aging, caused by degenerative changes in the inner ear. The etiology of presbycusis is uncertain. However, it would appear that a complex genetic cause is most likely. The determinants of mastoid size continue to be controversial. One of the pneumatization theories is the hereditary theory. In this study, the possible relationship between presbycusis and the extent of mastoid pneumatization was investigated. This study was carried out on 21 patients with presbycusis and 21 normal subjects of similar ages. The pneumatized volume was measured by computerized tomography. The temporal bone was scanned at 2mm thickness intervals. Exposure (kV 130, mA105). The scan plane was parallel to the orbitomeatal line and the CT images covered the entire mastoid region. The average mastoid pneumatization in presbycusis group was 6.08 ±2.52cm3 in the right ear and 6.19±2.93cm3 in the left ear. However, in the control group it was 4.69±3.17cm3 in the right ear (p=0.12) and 5.10±3.49cm3 in the left ear (p=0.28). No significant difference was found between the presbycusis patients and normal subjects in terms of the volume of mastoid pneumatization.

Objective-Thalamic abnormalities have been reported in people with pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) including Asperger’s Disorder (ASP). The aim of the present study was to compare the volume and volume fraction of the thalamus and the metabolite concentrations in children and adolescents with ASP using the magnetic resonance imaging and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Additionally, the relationships between thalamic abnormalities and clinical features were examined. Methods-Volume and volume fractional and metabolic measurements of bilateral thalamus were collected from 15 boys with ASP with a total IQ over 70 (age range 7–18 years, mean age 11.6±3.79 years), and 15 healthy controls matching age, sex and IQ. The thalamic volumes, hemisphere volumes and total brain volumes (TBV) were estimated using the stereological methods on magnetic resonance images. Chemical metabolites of thalamus were evaluated by 1H spectroscopy. Results-No differences in thalamic volumes, volume fractions and metabolites were observed between the groups. There were significant correlation between thalamic volume and total brain volume in both groups. The ASP group showed a significant left-minus-right thalamus difference as well as a significantly greater laterality index. In addition, a significant correlation between the laterality index and Autism Behavior Checklist language scores was observed. Conclusion-Findings from this investigation point to a significant increase in laterality of the thalamus and a relationship with language problems in individuals with ASP. Our findings suggest that thalamic abnormalities may be related to mild language problems observed in ASP.
