Android Rooting: An Arms Race between Evasion and Detection

<P>We present an arms race between rooting detection and rooting evasion. We investigate different methods to detect rooted device at both Java and native level and evaluate the counterattack from major hooking tools. To this end, an extensive study of Android rooting has been conducted, which includes the techniques to root the device and make it invisible to the detection of mobile antimalware product. We then analyze the evasion loopholes and in turn enhance our rooting detection tool. We also apply evasion techniques on rooted device and compare our work with 92 popular root checking applications and 18 banking and finance applications. Results show that most of them do not suffice and can be evaded through API hooking or static file renaming. Furthermore, over 28000 Android applications have been analyzed and evaluated in order to diagnose the characteristics of rooting in recent years. Our study shows that rooting has become more and more prevalent as an inevitable trend, and it raises big security concerns regarding detection and evasion. As a proof of concept, we have published our rooting detection application to Google Play Store to demonstrate the work presented in this paper.</P>
DroidSecure : A Technique to Mitigate Privilege Escalation in Android Application

안드로이드 플랫폼은 사용자 친화적으로 설계되어 있다. 하지만 이러한 친화적 설계는 취약점이 쉽게 발생할 수 있고, 일반적인 사용자는 쉽게 탐지가 어렵다는 단점을 가지고 있다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 안드로이드 어플리케이션 분석을 위한 유명한 오픈 소스 분석 도구를 설명하고, 현재 구글의 권한 그룹에 대한 정책의 위험성을 설명한 후 공격자의 권한 상승에 대한 위험을 완화하기 위한 기법을 제안한다. 또한, 21,064의 악성코드 샘플을 조사하여 제안한 기술이 안전하지 않은 응용 프로그램 업데이트 탐지에 대한 증명을 하였을 뿐 아니라 보안 위협에 대한 인식을 고취시키고자 하였다. Android platform is designed to be user-friendly, yet sometimes its convenience introduces vulnerabilities that normal users cannot justify. In this paper, after making an overview of popular open source analysis tools for android applications, we point out the dangerous use of Permission Group in current Google Policy, and suggest a technique to mitigate the risks of privilege escalation that attackers are taking advantage of. By conducting the investigation of 21,064 malware samples, we conclude that the proposed technique is considered effective in detecting insecure application update, as well as giving users the heads-up in security awareness.

Objectives: The average alcohol consumption per capita among Vietnamese adults has consistently increased. Although alcoholrelated disorders have been extensively studied, there is a paucity of research shedding light on this issue among Internet users. The study aimed to examine the severity of alcohol-related disorders and other associated factors that might predispose individuals towards alcohol usage in a sample of youths recruited online. Methods: An online cross-sectional study was conducted with 1,080 Vietnamese youths. A standardized questionnaire was used. Respondent-driven sampling was applied to recruit participants. Multivariate logistic and Tobit regressions were utilized to identify the associated factors. Results: About 59.5% of the males and 12.7% of the total youths declared that they were actively using alcohol. From the total sample, a cumulative total of 32.3% of the participants were drinking alcohol, with 21.8% and 25.0% of the participants being classified as drinking hazardously and binge drinkers, respectively. The majority of the participants (60.7%) were in the pre-contemplative stage. Conclusions: A high prevalence of hazardous drinking was recognized among online Vietnamese youths. In addition, we found relationships between alcohol use disorder and other addictive disorders, such as tobacco smoking and water-pipe usage. Our results highlighted that the majority of the individuals are not receptive to the idea of changing their alcohol habits, and this would imply that there ought to be more government effort towards the implementation of effective alcohol control policies.

Inflammatory and fibrotic responses are accelerated during the reperfusion period, and excessive fibrosis and inflammation contribute to cardiac malfunction. NecroX compounds have been shown to protect the liver and heart from ischemia-reperfusion injury. The aim of this study was to further define the role and mechanism of action of NecroX-5 in regulating infl ammation and fi brosis responses in a model of hypoxia/reoxygenation (HR). We utilized HR-treated rat hearts and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated H9C2 culture cells in the presence or absence of NecroX-5 (10 μmol/L) treatment as experimental models. Addition of NecroX-5 signifi cantly increased decorin (Dcn) expression levels in HR-treated hearts. In contrast, expression of transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFβ1) and Smad2 phosphorylation (pSmad2) was strongly attenuated in NecroX-5-treated hearts. In addition, signifi cantly increased production of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), TGFβ1, and pSmad2, and markedly decreased Dcn expression levels, were observed in LPS-stimulated H9C2 cells. Interestingly, NecroX-5 supplementation effectively attenuated the increased expression levels of TNFα, TGFβ1, and pSmad2, as well as the decreased expression of Dcn. Thus, our data demonstrate potential anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects of NecroX-5 against cardiac HR injuries via modulation of the TNFα/Dcn/TGFβ1/Smad2 pathway.

Background: The evidence for the efficacy and safety of balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) in treating the Vietnamese patients is sparse. There is no convincing evidence regarding BKP’s efficacy in Vietnamese patients, especially in the patients with thoracic osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (VCFs). This article aims to evaluate the outcomes of restoring the body height of the compressed thoracic vertebrae in patients undergoing BKP. Methods: We prospectively enrolled 65 consecutive patients with thoracic VCFs (73 vertebrae) due to osteoporosis who were treated with BKP between June 2018 and May 2019. Results: A trocar was inserted through the pedicle in 84.9% (62/73) and beside the pedicle in 15.1% (11/73). The mean amount of mixed cement injected was 4.1 ± 1.1 mL (range, 1.5–7 mL). Cement leakage was radiographically confirmed in 30.8% of 65 patients. Among patients with complications caused by cement extravasation, the leakage was through the anterior margin of the vertebrae in 15.4%, through the vertebral disc in 12.3%, and through the posterior margin of the vertebrae in 3.1%. In the last 3.1% of patients, there was no clinically notable lesions of the nerve roots or spinal cord. The mean visual analog scale score decreased significantly from 7.3 ± 1.1 preoperatively to 3.3 ± 0.6 at 24 hours after surgery, and then to 1.2 ± 1.1 at 3 months after surgery (p < 0.01). The mean reduction in Cobb angle measured on standing radiographs after treatment was 3.7°, showing statistical significance (p < 0.01). Conclusions: BKP is a minimally invasive treatment effective for immediate pain relief, early motor rehabilitation, and humpback correction. The present study provided convincing evidence to support the use of BKP by spine surgeons and clinical specialists in treating osteoporotic thoracic VCFs in Vietnamese patients.
Taxus wallichiana Zucc. 현탁세포에서 Jasmonic Acid-Cellulase 복합 Elicitor가 Paclitaxel 생합성에 미치는 영향

Taxus wallichiana Zucc. 현탁세포배양에서 항암제 paclitaxel 생합성 연구를 수행하였다. 현탁세포배양에서 exponential phase의 최고 생장 속도는 0.14 day-1이었으며 배가시간이 4.96 day이었다. Paclitaxel은 배양초기에 생성되지 않고 exponential phase 말기부터 서서히 생성되어 stationary phase에서도 이어지며 declined phase에서 최고치를 나타내었다. Paclitaxel의 생산을 촉진하기 위하여 elicitor를 사용하였다. 여러 elicitor 중 jasmonic acid와 cellulase가 paclitaxel의 생성을 증가시켰다. Elicitor는 접종과 동시에 투여했을 때 가장 효과가 좋았으며, jasmonic acid와 cellulase의 combination으로 효과가 더욱 증진했는데 각각 투여할 때보다 1.8배 및 3.1배 paclitaxel 생성이 증가되었다. Cell cultures of Taxus wallichiana Zucc. were made to enhance the production of anticancer agent paclitaxel. In suspension cultures, the maximum cell growth rate in exponential growth phase was 0.14 day-1 which was correlated to 4.96 days of cell doubling time. The production of paclitaxel was non-growth associated. The paclitaxel production was started after the exponential growth phase and increased to declined phase where the maximum concentration was observed. Various elicitors were tested to enhance the production of paclitaxel. The combination of two elicitors of jasmonic acid and cellulase increased the production of paclitaxel 1.8 and 3.1 times compared to paclitaxel production by individual elicitor respectively.

Although the antioxidant and cardioprotective effects of NecroX-5 on various in vitro and in vivo models have been demonstrated, the action of this compound on the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation system remains unclear. Here we verify the role of NecroX-5 in protecting mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation capacity during hypoxia-reoxygenation (HR). Necrox-5 treatment ($10{\mu}M$) and non-treatment were employed on isolated rat hearts during hypoxia/reoxygenation treatment using an ex vivo Langendorff system. Proteomic analysis was performed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and non-labeling peptide count protein quantification. Real-time PCR, western blot, citrate synthases and mitochondrial complex activity assays were then performed to assess heart function. Treatment with NecroX-5 during hypoxia significantly preserved electron transport chain proteins involved in oxidative phosphorylation and metabolic functions. NecroX-5 also improved mitochondrial complex I, II, and V function. Additionally, markedly higher peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator-$1{\alpha}$ ($PGC1{\alpha}$) expression levels were observed in NecroX-5-treated rat hearts. These novel results provide convincing evidence for the role of NecroX-5 in protecting mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation capacity and in preserving $PGC1{\alpha}$ during cardiac HR injuries.
