Herpes simplex viruses(HSV) are one of the most common infectious virus of man. Though chemotherapies and antiviotics against HSV have been developed in many countries, but anti-HSV agents were not satisfactory to mankind by their toxic reaction and side effects. In order to search for anti-HSV agents from Korean traditional prescriptions, we extended the number of specimens. Both methanol extract and boiling water extract of the Korean traditional prescriptions were screened to detect anti-HSV activities by MTT assay. Korean traditional prescriptions showing anti-HSV activities as methanol extracts were Paekyo˘psan, Chesu˘pwilyu˘ngtang, Yongdamsangantang, and prescription 11. Four methanol extracts showing anti- HSV activities were fractionated by hexane and their efficacies were tested. Hexane fractionations of Paekyo˘psan, Chesu˘pwilyu˘ngtang, and prescription 11 showed in anti-HSV in tissue culture and their selectivity indexes (SI) were 19.50, 3.32 and 42.90, respectively. Methanol fractionation of Paekyo˘psan showed anti-HSV activities and its SI was 1.40. Especially Paekyo˘psan showed anti-HSV activities both haxane and methanol fractionation.

In order to improve the qualities of boiling extract the availability of standard compounds was investigated in extract of Scutellariae Radix. The standard compounds used baicalin(1), baicalein(2), and wogonin(3). The availabilities were analyzed by thin layer chromatography(TLC) and high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) on C18 column. The extract of RS-4(W/V=10g/100ml) showed the highest availabilities as 7.95% of baicalin(1), 1.04% of baicalein(2), and 0.31% of wogonin(3).

As one of the chemical and experimental study on cancer treatment in Korea oriental medical hospital. Furthermore, we carried out the cytotoxicity test of extracts of herbal medicine. The results are as follows : About Clinical Aspects of the Oriental Medical Cancer Treatment - (1) Clinical experience is that 420 Oriental medical hospital were surveyed. Number of cancer patient treated by one oriental medical doctor was under 10(about 60%) or from 10 to 20(about 30%). (2) Diagnostic Procedure is that more than 80% of cancer patients were diagnosed by medical doctor of western hospital. (3) Therapeutic Method is that combination of oriental and western medical treatment was used in oriental medical hospital. (4) Relationship between cancer and constitutions is that to the relationship between cancer and constitutions, about 75% responded and most were considered to be Um. About Experimental Study - to evaluate the direct cytotoxicity of hot water and methanol extracts of 34 oriental medical presciptions on stomach cancer cell, SRB assay was carried out. (1) The IC50 value of water extract of Samsoum was 19㎍/㎖ and that of methanol extract was 15㎍/㎖, so that we confirmed Samsoum has a strong direct cytotoxicity. (2) The IC50 values of water extract of Coptidis Rhizoma, methanol extract of Caesalpiniae Lignum and Draba Semen were 10㎍/㎖, 19㎍/㎖ and 12.5㎍/㎖ respectively, so that we confirmed Coptidis Rhizoma, Caesalpiniae Lignum and Draba Semen have a strong direct cytototoxicity. (3) The IC50 value of combinatory prescription of Rhei Rhizoma, Forsythie Fructus and Caesalpiniae Lignum was about 40㎍/㎖.

( Kap Joo Park ),( Ki Heung Ahn ),( Hyung Hoan Lee ) 한국환경생물학회 2004 환경생물 : 환경생물학회지 Vol.22 No.4
N/A This study sought to investigate the ameliorating effects of a Korean medicinal herb (KMH) complex on the impacts of alcohol consumption in rat hepatocytes and in reducing the total cholesterol levels and the total lipid levels in the serum. We compared the body weight gain and ratio of the liver, the kidney to body weight, and also the serum biochemistry of the rats administered with both the alcohol and the KMH complex to the control rats treated with alcohol alone. The clinically important enzyme markers (Aspartate Aminotransferase, AST, and Alanine Aminotransferase, ALT) of rats, administered with both the alcohol and the KMH complex treatments, were compared with those in the control group. The treatment regimen (KMH complex) significantly reduced the serum AST and ALT levels, indicating the hepato- protective effects of the KMH complex. Furthermore, total cholesterol and total lipid levels were significantly reduced. These results indicate that the KMH complex may positively mediate the effects of alcohol on hepatocytes and the general liver functions.
Korean Medicinal Herb Extracts Inhibit Melanin Formation in Clone M-3 Mouse Melanocyte Cell Lines
( Kap Joo Park ),( Dong Wan Choo ),( Hyung Hoan Lee ) 한국환경생물학회 2004 환경생물 : 환경생물학회지 Vol.22 No.2
N/A In order to search for anti-melanin formation agents from Korean medicinal herbs, we selected 21 Korean medicinal herbs, based on a review of Korean traditional medicine books and the recommendations of Korean traditional medical doctors. We tested for inhibition effect of melanin pigmentation of Clone M-3 mouse melanocyte cell lines when we treated the extracts of 21 medicinal herbs in the mouse melanocyte cell lines, respectively. Among 21 medicinal herb extracts, 5 extracts showed a inhibition effect of melanin formation. The sample Phaseolus radiatus L, Cordyceps militaris, Pinellia ternata, Phellinus linteus and Citrus junos Tanaka showed a significantly little formation of melanin pigments compared with control groups. Especially extract of Citrus junos Tanaka was more potent than the others. These results suggest that extract of Korean Citrus junos may represents an excellent candidate for inhibition of melanin pigmentation at in vitro level.

N/A Pine needle oil and Korean medicinal herbs (KMH) are known as effective therapeutic agents on various blood vessel disease. We have already reported the ameliorative effect of complex of pine needle oil and Korean medicinal herbs against hyperlipidemia. But safety and non-toxicity of pine needle oil and Korean medicinal herbs to normal animal cells have not been studied clearly. In this study, we investigated whether pine needle oil and Korean medicinal herbs show side effects on rat or not. These materials were administered to rats, and subacute toxicity was examined by measuring the hematological values, CBC differentiation, biochemical levels of blood (TP, total protein; albumin; ALP, alkaline phosphotase; AST, aspatate aminotransferase; ALT, alanine aminotransferase; T-Chol., total cholesterol; T-Bil., total bilirubin) and urine analysis, suggesting that the sample have no side effects and cytotoxicity. These results indicate that the complex of pine needle oil and Korean medicinal herbs may effective non-toxic, safety therapeutic agents on hepatocytes and hyperlipidemia.
