        Characteristics of Cholesterol-lowering Lactobacillus casei subsp. casei strain GL-03 Isolated from Cheese

        Cholesterol-lowering effect of lactic acid bacteria iswell-known. In the present study, nine cholesterol-loweringLactobacillus strains from Chinese traditional cheese, pickle, andyoghurt were screened and characterized for their potential use. The microbial contents of all strains significantly decreased at pH1.5; however, the residual counts of Lactobacillus casei subsp. casei GL-03, L. plantarum ZP-Z, L. plantarum ZP-05, and L. brevis ZP-04 were more than 107 CFU/mL after incubation for 6h. All nine strains of Lactobacillus indicated good tolerance to bileat concentration less than 0.2% after incubation for 2 to 6 h. L. plantarum ZP-W had maximum hydrophobicity towards xylene,whereas GL-03 strain possessed maximum hydrophobicity forboth hexadecane and octane. ZP-05 strain had more effectiveinhibitory activity against both Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillussubtilis than other eight strains. Furthermore, GL-03 strainsignificantly reduced cholesterol TC and TG levels in hyperlipidemiamice fed high-cholesterol diet. The growth of GL-03 strain waspromoted by five kinds of Chinese herbal medicines, and theChinese hawthorn at concentration of 0.0125% showed thehighest promoting effect. These results suggest that L. casei subsp. casei GL-03 may be effective as a probiotic with cholesterollowingactivities.

      • Orientation-Dependent Hydration Structures at Yttria-Stabilized Cubic Zirconia Surfaces

        <P>Water interaction with surfaces is very important and plays key roles in many natural and technological processes. Because the experimental challenges that arise when studying the interaction water with specific crystalline surfaces, most studies on metal oxides have focused on powder samples, which averaged the interaction over different crystalline surfaces. As a result, studies on the crystal orientation-dependent interaction of water with metal oxides are rarely available in the literature. In this work, water adsorption at 8 mol % yttria-stabilized cubic single crystal zirconia (100) and (111) surfaces was studied in terms of interfacial hydration structures using high resolution X-ray reflectivity measurements. The interfacial electron density profiles derived from the structure factor analysis of the measured data show the existence of multiple layers of adsorbed water with additional peculiar metal adsorption near the oxide surfaces.Surface relaxation, depletion, and interaction between the adsorbed layers and bulk water are found to vary greatly between the two surfaces and are also different when compared to the previously studied (110) surface [Hou et al., Sci. Rep. 2016, 6, 27916]. The fractional ratio between chemisorbed and physisorbed water species were also quantitatively estimated, which turned out to vary dramatically from surface to surface. The result gives us a unique opportunity to reconsider the simplified 2:1 relation between chemisorption and physisorption, originally proposed by Morimoto et al. based on the adsorption isotherms of water on powder metal oxide samples.</P>

      • Effect of Paclitaxel-loaded Nanoparticles on the Viability of Human Hepatocellular Carcinoma HepG2 Cells

        Objective: To explore effects of paclitaxel-loaded poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) particles on the viability of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) HepG2 cells. Materials and Methods: The viability of HepG2 cells was assessed using MTT under different concentrations of prepared paclitaxel-loaded particles and paclitaxel (6.25, 12.5, 25, 50, and 100 mg/L), and apoptosis was analyzed using Hochest33342/Annexin V-FITC/PI combined with an IN Cell Analyzer 2000. Results: Paxlitaxel-loaded nanoparticles were characterized by narrow particle size distribution (158.6 nm average particle size). The survival rate of HepG2 cells exposed to paclitaxel-loaded PLGA particles decreased with the increase of concentration and time period (P<0.01 or P<0.05), the dose- and time-dependence indicating sustained release (P<0.05). Moreover, apoptosis of HepG2 cells was induced, again with an obvious dose- and time-effect relationship (P<0.05). Conclusions: Paclitaxel-loaded PLGA particles can inhibit the proliferation and induce the apoptosis of HCC HepG2 cells. This new-type of paclitaxel carrier body is easily made and has low cost, good nanoparticle characterization and sustained release. Hence, paclitaxel-loaded PLGA particles deserve to be widely popularized in the clinic.

        기획주제(企劃主題) : 동아시아 한자(漢字),한자교육(漢字敎育)의 현황(現況)과 과제(課題); 漢字文化圈初級階段的詞彙與漢字敎學 -以瑞典隆德大學中文專業爲例

        스웨덴 룬드대학은 중국어 교육의 주요 기지이며, 중문과 전공의 초급 단계 학생들은 중국어 교육에 있어서 10년이 넘게 『初級漢語』라는 자신들이 편찬한 교재를 사용함으로써 학습 동기를 유발하고, 스웨덴어와 중국어를 서로 참고할 수있도록 하였다. 통계에 따르면, 『漢語水準詞彙與漢字等級大綱』의 갑급 단어와 비교해 본 결과, 약 41%의 갑급 단어가『初級漢語』에 보이지 않는다. 『初級漢語』의 단어가이렇게 된 이유는 한자의 출현 순서에 따라 본문의 내용을 따라갈 뿐, 『漢語水準詞彙與漢字等級大綱』의 단어 등급과 한자 등급을 따르지 않기 때문이다. 이외에도 전문적인 한자과목이 개설되지 않았기 때문에 학생들은 한자의 규칙을 학습하는데 매우 어려움을 느끼고 있으며, 이로 인해 학생들의 중국어 능력을 향상시키는데 일정 정도의 어려움이 있다. 본고는 비한자문화권 초급 단계 학생들에게 어휘와 한자를 교육하는 방법을 제시함으로써, 향후 비한자문화권 학생들의 중국어 학습에 있어 보다 효과적인 어휘와 한자 교육에 대해 토의하는 계기가 되고자 한다. Lund University is one of the important center of Chinese teaching in Sweden,the textbook Elementary Chinese used at the elementary stage is compiled by the teachers in the Chinese Department of this University,it is an interesting book with Sweden translation and used as long as more than ten years. According to statistics,compared with the Grade A vocabulary in the The outline of the Graded Vocabulary ,41% of the Grade A vocabulary doesn`t appear in Elementary Chinese,and apparently many words in Elementary Chinese are not included in The outline of the Graded Vocabulary.The order that the characters appear follows the content of the Text and isn`t based on The outline of the Graded Vocabulary. Furthermore, because there is no special Chinese characters courses,it is difficult for the students to learn the rule of Chinese character structure. Chinese characters become an obstacle for the students to promote their Chinese level. This paper tries to analyse how to teach Chinese characters for the students on the non circle of Chinese characters.

      • Systemic Analysis on Laparoscope-Assisted Gastrectomy for Patients with Gastric Cancer

        Background: Laparoscope-assisted gastrectomy in treating patients with gastric cancers developed with a background of highly invasive traditional surgery and is being increasingly performed in the Asian Pacific area. This study systemically investigated the technique and clinical results for comparison with traditional radical subtotal gastrectomy for gastric cancers. Methods: Clinical studies evaluating the effectiveness and side effects of laparoscope-assisted gastrectomy in treating patients with gastric cancers were identified using a predefined search strategy. Summary rates of effectiveness and side effects of laparoscope-assisted gastrectomy were calculated. Results: Thirteen clinical studies which including 1,412 patients with gastric cancer treated by laparoscope-assisted gastrectomy were considered eligible for inclusion. Systemic analysis showed that, for all patients, the pooled resection rate was 100%. Major adverse effects were anastomotic stenosis, abdominal abscess, abdominal bleeding, postoperative ileus. Treatment related death occurred in 0. 71% (10/1412). Conclusion: This systemic analysis suggests that laparoscope-assisted gastrectomy in treating patients with gastric cancers is associated with good curative rate and acceptable complications.

        Identification, fine mapping and characterization of Rht-dp, a recessive wheat dwarfing (reduced height) gene derived from Triticum polonicum

        Semi-dwarfism is an agronomically important trait in breeding for resistance to damage by wind and rain (lodging resistance)and for stable high yields. Dwarf Polish wheat (Triticum polonicum L., 2n = 4x = 28, AABB AS304) is a potential donor of dwarfing and other traits for common wheat improvement. A genetic analysis using an F2 population derived from a cross of AS304 and tall cultivar AS302 and derived F2:3 lines indicated that AS304 carries a recessive dwarfing gene, temporarily designated Rht-dp. Molecular markers and bulked segregant analysis were used to characterize and map the gene. Eight polymorphic SSR markers (Xwmc511, Xgwm495, Xgwm 113, Xgwm192, Xgpw7026, Xgpw3017, Xgpw1108 and Xgpw7521) on chromosome arm 4BS and two AFLP markers (M8/E5 and M4/E3) were mapped relative to the dwarfing locus. The closest linked markers, Xgpw3017 and M8/E5 at 0.5 and 3.5 cM, respectively, from Rht-dp will enable its marker assisted transfer to wheat breeding populations. Allelic tests indicated that Rht-dp was allelic to Rht-B1b; hence it may be an alternative allele at the Rht-B1 locus.

      • Highly stable 3D porous heterostructures with hierarchically-coordinated octahedral transition metals for enhanced performance supercapacitors

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Designing and tailoring the assembly of complex ternary transition metal oxide (TTMO) structures are a key step in the pursuit of high performance pseudo-capacitive materials for the development of next-generation energy storage devices. Here, we present uniquely assembled 3D porous heterostructures with hierarchically-coordinated TTMOs, comprising the multiply interconnected primary nanoporous frameworks of ZnCo<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB>/NiMoO<SUB>4</SUB> core-shell structures and the secondary protruding structures of NiMoO<SUB>4</SUB> layered nanosheets. By benefiting from the combination of hierarchically cooperative two TTMOs, the developed 3D ZnCo<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB>/NiMoO<SUB>4</SUB> heterostructures with their stable, porous, and conductive features exhibit robust pseudo-capacitive performance with high capacitances of 6.07Fcm<SUP>–2</SUP> and 1480.48Fg<SUP>–1</SUP> at 2mAcm<SUP>–2</SUP> as well as an excellent cycling stability of 90.6% over 15,000 cycles. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor device can deliver a high energy density of 48.6Whkg<SUP>–1</SUP> and a power density of 2820Wkg<SUP>–1</SUP>. The superior pseudo-capacitive energy storage characteristics are strongly attributed to the interconnected 3D nanoporous network architectures of the TTMOs along with the secondary layered nanosheets that provide 1) the enlarged surface area with the high conductivity, 2) the facile and multi-access ion paths, and 3) the favorable structural stability.         High β-Glucosidase Secretion in Saccharomyces cerevisiae Improves the Efficiency of Cellulase Hydrolysis and Ethanol Production in Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation

        Bioethanol production from lignocellulose is considered as a sustainable biofuel supply. However, the low cellulose hydrolysis efficiency limits the cellulosic ethanol production. The cellulase is strongly inhibited by the major end product cellobiose, which can be relieved by the addition of β-glucosidase. In this study, three β-glucosidases from different organisms were respectively expressed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the β-glucosidase from Saccharomycopsis fibuligera showed the best activity (5.2 U/ml). The recombinant strain with S. fibuligera β-glucosidase could metabolize cellobiose with a specific growth rate similar to the control strain in glucose. This recombinant strain showed higher hydrolysis efficiency in the cellulose simultaneous saccharification and fermentation, when using the Trichoderma reesei cellulase, which is short of the β-glucosidase activity. The final ethanol concentration was 110% (using Avicel) and 89% (using acid-pretreated corncob) higher than the control strain. These results demonstrated the effect of β-glucosidase secretion in the recombinant S. cerevisiae for enhancing cellulosic ethanol conversion.
