We present here a high-throughput strategy to discover serological biomarkers for early-detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Our strategy is also applicable to assess the progressed liver fibrosis that is associated with virus hepatitis. The glycan structure on glycoproteins derived from cancerous cells is known to be different from that derived from normal cells, specifically, the increased aberrant glycosylation appears in patient serum with virus hepatitis along with either or both the initiation and progression. Based on the above perceptions, in order to identify glycoproteins carrying aberrant glycosylation in serum of liver disease patients, we analyzed lectin-captured glycopeptides by the IGOT method. Many glycoproteins carrying altered glycans were successfully identified. The increased amount of these glycoproteins was clinically relevant to the progression of the liver diseases. We are now selecting appropriate molecules depending on the feasibility to detect an abnormality in the liver, such as the occurrence of liver cell neoplasm.

The training of embedded software engineers in educational institutions is required for embedded systems companies. We focus on computer architecture education for learning about the operations and architectures of processors. We use the Kyutech Easily Reconstructive Naked Educational (KERNEL) system, which was designed for computer architecture education. The KERNEL system enables users to observe the internal architecture and states of processors during execution. It helps beginners to learn the basics of a computer architecture by writing their programs into the KERNEL memory so they can observe the processor’s execution. This paper describes a field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based educational system cooperating with mobile applications, and offers a performance evaluation of its wireless communications. The system consists of an FPGA board implemented with one"s own K16 model processor that designed for computer hardware educations in the KERNEL system and mobile applications that become a console for setting and displaying the internal state of the processor. It is possible for users to write their programs, set registers in the processor, and observe the internal state of the processor during execution by using a mobile application. Communications between the FPGA and the mobile application uses classic Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy technology.
Control of Container Crane by Binary Input using Mixed Logical Dynamical System

This paper proposes an effective control system for a container crane that takes into account disturbances such as a wind. For efficient crane operation, it is necessary to realize accurate positioning of cranes, to minimize oscillation of containers and to realize the fastest possible control time while they are being carried. The crane input is assumed to be a binary with maximum and minimum values for quick control. The entire crane system including the binary input is considered as a hybrid system. A hybrid system is a generic term for a system in which continuous and discrete dynamics exist together. We control the entire crane system using the Mixed Logical Dynamical (MLD) system. An MLD system, which is a representation method for a hybrid system, is used for the crane system. It is generally known that an MLD system can be controlled by Model Predictive Control (MPC). We confirm the effectiveness of the proposed technique through computer simulation of the crane.

Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the factor structure of a novel, 10-item rating scale, the Targeted Inventory on Problems in Schizophrenia (TIP-Sz). Determining the factor structure will be useful in the brief evaluation of medication and non-medication treatment of the disease. Methods: An exploratory factor analysis was performed on TIP-Sz scores obtained from 100 patients who met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) criteria for schizophrenia. Results: The factor analysis extracted four factors that were deemed clinically pertinent, which we labeled: disorganization, social cooperativeness, functional capacity, and emotional state. The items exhibited cross-loadings on the first three factors (i.e.,some items loaded on more than one factor). In particular, the ‘behavioral dyscontrol and disorganization,’ ‘insight and reality testing,’ and ‘overall prognostic impression’ items had comparable cross-loadings on all of the first three factors. The emotional state factor was distinct from the other factors in that the items loading on it did not cross-load on other factors. Conclusion: The TIP-Sz scale comprises factors that are associated with the psychosocial functioning and emotional state of patients, which are important outcome parameters for successful treatment of the disease.

Objective: Our objective was to determine the feasibility and detection rates and clarify the most effective combination of injected tracer types for sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping in uterine cervical cancer in patients who have undergone laparoscopic surgery or neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). Methods: A total of 119 patients with cervical cancer underwent SLN biopsy at radical hysterectomy using three types of tracers. The various factors related to side-specific detection rate, sensitivity, and false negative (FN) rate were analyzed. Results: The SLN detection rates using 99m-technetium (99mTc)-tin colloid, indigo carmine, and indocyanine green (ICG) were 85.8%, 20.2%, and 61.6%, respectively. The patients with ≥2-cm-diameter tumors and those who received NAC had lower detection rates than those with <2-cm-diameter tumors (75.7% vs. 91.5%, p<0.01) and those who did not receive NAC (67.9% vs. 86.3%, p<0.01), respectively. Laparoscopic procedures had a higher detection rate than laparotomy (100.0% vs. 77.1%, p<0.01). No factors significantly affected the sensitivity; however, the patients with ≥2-cm-diameter tumors (86.0% vs. 1.4%, p<0.01), NAC (19.4% vs. 2.2%, p<0.01), and those who underwent laparotomy (7.4% vs. 0%, p<0.01) had an unfavorable FN rate. Conclusion: Among the examined tracers, 99mTc had the highest detection of SLN mapping in patients with uterine cervical cancer. Patients with local advanced cervical cancer with/without NAC treatment might be unsuited for SLN mapping. SLN mapping is feasible and results in an excellent detection rate in patients with <2-cm-diameter cervical cancer. Laparoscopic surgery is the best procedure for SLN detection in patients with early-stage disease.
