In addition to a primary feature of rosacea, phymatous rosacea may include skin thickening, irregular surface nodularities, and patulous follicles. There are several therapeutic options for phymatous rosacea, including isotretinoin, antibiotics and surgical treatments. However, Phymatous rosacea can be disfiguring and difficult to treat. Case 1. A 79-year-old man patient presented with erythematous large nodular masses on the nose. Under the impression of phymatous rosacea in the advanced stage, because the patient complained about breathing discomfort and cosmetic problems, surgical treatment was considered. Electrocautery was performed to correct the deformity of the nose. Two months later, the lesion was obviously decreased and the results were satisfactory both functionally and cosmetically. Case 2. A 27-year-old man patient, with a history of aplastic anemia, presented with pricky erythematous plaque on the nose. Under the impression of phymatous rosacea in the early stage, treatment was initiated with isotretinoin 20 mg daily. There was a slight improvement at the beginning of the treatment and the lesion was definitely improved from 9 months after the treatment. Currently, the lesion is under the same treatment protocol without any side effects. We herein report on two cases of successfully treated phymatous rosacea, emphasizing the importance of choosing the appropriate treatment modality.

2-dimensional silica-silica Continuous Fiber-reinforced Ceramic.matrix Composites (CFCCs) were fabricated by a sol-gel infilitration method that has a changing processing condition, such as the repetitions of infilitration. In order to investigate the relationship between the processing condition and the mechanical properties of composites, the mechanical properties of specimens were measured by means of a 4-point flexural strength test while the evidence of strength degradation were microstructurally characterized. There seemed to be a minimum density value that existed at which the delamination between the fabrics would not occur. In the case that the density of silica CFCCs exceeded 1.55 g/$cm^3$, the flexural strength also exceeded approximately 18 MPa at least. By applying the Minimum Solid Area (MSA) analysis of the porous structure, the correlation between the relative density and the mechanical properties of composites will be discussed.

${\beta}-SiAlON$, based on its high fracture toughness, good strength and low abrasion resistance, has been adopted in several industrial fields such as bearings, turbine blades and non-ferrous metal refractories. In general, ${\beta}-SiAlON$ is fabricated by reactive sintering using expensive $Si_3N_4$ and AlN as starting materials. On the other hand, in this study, a cheaper ${\beta}-SiAlON$ starting powder synthesized by SHS was employed to improve price competitiveness compared to that of the reactive sintering process. ${\beta}-SiAlON$ ceramics with various content of the sintering additive $Y_2O_3$ up to 7 wt% were fabricated by conventional pressureless sintering at $1800^{\circ}C$ for 2 to 8 h under $N_2$ pressure of 0.1 MPa. The specimen with 3 wt% $Y_2O_3$ exhibited the best mechanical properties: hardness of 14 GPa, biaxial strength of 830 MPa, fracture toughness of $5MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and wear rate of about $3{\times}10^{-6}mm^3/N{\cdot}m$.

The nitriding behavior of silicon/additives mixture with varied composition was investigated by focusing on the catalytic effect of sintering additives (Y2O3 and Al2O3) and diluents (Si3N4). While sintering additives have originally been mixed to form a liquid phase to promote both densification and grain growth during post-sintering, it was revealed that the addition of Y2O3 enhances the nitriding reaction by eliminating the SiO2 and Si3N4 layer on the surface of silicon particles. Further, a synergistic effect resulting in an increased nitridation was verified by concurrent addition of sintering additives and diluents. The contribution of each component of the compact to the promoted nitriding reaction was elucidated in quasi in-situ manner by the combination of phase analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. Cordyceps militaris alleviates non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in ob/ob mice
Ha-Neul Choi,Yang-Hee Jang,Min-Joo Kim,Min Jeong Seo,Byoung Won Kang,Yong Kee Jeong3,,Jung-In Kim 대한지역사회영양학회 2014 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.8 No.2
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is becoming an important public health problem as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes have become epidemic. In this study we investigated the protective effect of Cordyceps militaris (C. militaris) against NAFLD in an obese mouse model. MATERIALS/METHODS: Four-week-old male ob/ob mice were fed an AIN-93G diet or a diet containing 1% C. militaris water extract for 10 weeks after 1 week of adaptation. Serum glucose, insulin, free fatty acid (FFA), alanine transaminase (ALT), and proinflammatory cytokines were measured. Hepatic levels of lipids, glutathione (GSH), and lipid peroxide were determined. RESULTS: Consumption of C. militaris significantly decreased serum glucose, as well as homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), in ob/ob mice. In addition to lowering serum FFA levels, C. militaris also significantly decreased hepatic total lipids and triglyceride contents. Serum ALT activities and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were reduced by C. militaris. Consumption of C. militaris increased hepatic GSH and reduced lipid peroxide levels. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that C. militaris can exert protective effects against development of NAFLD, partly by reducing inflammatory cytokines and improving hepatic antioxidant status in ob/ob mice.
Crystal structure and functional characterization of SF216 from Shigella flexneri
Kim, Ha-Neul,Seok, Seung-Hyeon,Lee, Yoo-Sup,Won, Hyung-Sik,Seo, Min-Duk Wiley (John WileySons) 2017 FEBS letters Vol.591 No.21

Shigella flexneri is a Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium that causes highly infectious bacterial dysentery in humans. Here, we solved the crystal structure of SF216, a hypothetical protein from the S.flexneri 5a strain M90T, at 1.7 angstrom resolution. The crystal structure of SF216 represents a homotrimer stabilized by intersubunit interactions and ion-mediated electrostatic interactions. Each subunit consists of three beta-strands and five alpha-helices with the beta-beta-beta-alpha-alpha-alpha-alpha-alpha topology. Based on the structural information, we also demonstrate that SF216 shows weak ribonuclease activity by a fluorescence quenching assay. Furthermore, we identify potential druggable pockets (putative hot spots) on the surface of the SF216 structure by computational mapping.

Abstract
Responding to the need for recombinant acidic fibroblast growth factor in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, we established a scalable expression system for recombinant human aFGF using transient and a DNA replicon vector expression in Nicotiana benthamiana. Recombinant human-acidic fibroblast growth factor was recovered following Agrobacterium infiltration of N. benthamiana. The optimal time point at which to harvest recombinant human acidic fibroblast growth factor expressing leaves was found to be 4 days post-infiltration, before necrosis was evident. Commassie-stained SDS-PAGE gels of His-tag column eluates, concentrated using a 10 000 molecular weight cut-off column, showed an intense band at the expected molecular weight for recombinant human acidic fibroblast growth factor. An immunoblot confirmed that this band was recombinant human acidic fibroblast growth factor. Up to 10 µg recombinant human-acidic fibroblast growth factor/g of fresh leaves were achieved by a simple affinity purification protocol using protein extract from the leaves of agroinfiltrated N. benthamiana. The purified recombinant human acidic fibroblast growth factor improved the survival rate of UVB-irradiated HaCaT and CCD-986sk cells approximately 89 and 81 %, respectively. N. benthamiana-derived recombinant human acidic fibroblast growth factor showed similar effects on skin cell proliferation and UVB protection compared to those of Escherichia coli-derived recombinant human acidic fibroblast growth factor. Additionally, N. benthamiana-derived recombinant human acidic fibroblast growth factor increased type 1 procollagen synthesis up to 30 % as well as reduced UVB-induced intracellular reactive oxygen species generation in fibroblast (CCD-986sk) cells.

UVB is a well-known factor that causes various types of skin damage and premature aging. Therefore, the present study demonstrated that N. benthamiana-derived recombinant human acidic fibroblast growth factor effectively protects skin cell from UVB, suggesting its potential use as a cosmetic or therapeutic agent against skin photoaging.
