        Identification of Zygosaccharomyces mellis strains in stored honey and their stress tolerance

        To screen yeast with high sugar tolerance and evaluate their stress tolerance, six yeast strains were selected from 17 stored honey samples. The species were identified through 26S rRNA sequencing. Their stress tolerance was determined via the Durham fermentation method and ethanol production ability was determined via flask fermentation. The results demonstrated that all the six strains were Zygosaccharomyces mellis. Their sugar, ethanol, and acid tolerance ranges were 500-700 g/L, 10-12% (v/v), and pH 2.5-4.5, respectively. The $SO_2$ tolerance was 250 mg/L. Among the six strains, 6-7431 had the best stress tolerance with sugar tolerance of 700 g/L, ethanol tolerance of 12% (v/v), and acid tolerance of pH 2.5. Furthermore, the strain of 6-7431 had the highest percentage of ethanol production at the same initial sugar content as the other strains. Therefore, the selected six yeast strains would be promising fermentation yeasts for wine-making, ethanol production, or other fermentation purposes.

        Effect of Urolithin A on Bone Repair in Mice with Bone Defects

        BACKGROUND: Bone defect difficult to manage clinically and it is a big challenge to repair it. Secondary metabolites source from herb has shown potential for the treatment of bone defect. METHODS: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were isolated from mice and incubated with urolithin A (UA) (10, 25, and 50 lg/mL). 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was performed to estimate apoptosis and mineralisation was evaluated by alkaline phosphatase assay and alizarin red S staining. A middle femoral defect was induced in mice and bone tissue was prepared for endochondral ossification by treating with UA. The effect of UA was estimated by determining markers of osteoblast proliferation in serum and micro-computed tomography to analyse bone defects. RESULTS: UA enhanced mineralisation of MSCs and osteogenic gene markers in MSCs in vitro. Also, the bone defect score and bone mineral density were improved by UA. Moreover, UA ameliorated the altered Wnt3a protein and histopathological changes in bone defect mice. CONCLUSION: Presented report conclude that UA enhances osteoblast proliferation in bone-defect mice by activating the Wnt pathway.

        SE-CAC: A Novel Call Admission Control Scheme for Multi-service IDMA Systems

        In this paper a simple and effective call admission control (CAC) scheme is proposed for the emerging interleave-division multiple-access (IDMA) systems, supporting a variety of traffic types and offering different quality of service (QoS) requirements and priority levels. The proposed scheme is signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) evolution based CAC (SE-CAC). The key idea behind the scheme is to take advantage of the SINR evolution technique in the process of making admission decisions, which is developed from the effective chip-by-chip (CBC) multi-user detection (MUD) process in IDMA systems. By virtue of this semi-analytical technique, the MUD efficiency can be estimated accurately. Additionally, the computational complexity can be considerably reduced. These features make the scheme highly suitable for IDMA systems, which can combat intra-cell interference efficiently with simple CBC MUD. Analysis and simulation results show that compared to the traditional CAC scheme considering MUD efficiency as a constant, the proposed SE-CAC scheme can guarantee high power efficiency and throughput for multimedia traffic even in heavy load conditions, illustrating the high efficiency of CBC MUD. Furthermore, based on the SINR evolution, the SE-CAC can make accurate estimation of available resource considering the effect of MUD, leading to low outage probability as well as low blocking and dropping probability.
