Background/Aims: Disease activity in ulcerative colitis (UC) is generally assessed using symptoms, laboratory data, endoscopic findings, and histology of the biopsy specimens. In this study, we compared disease activity of UC as determined by clinical features and endoscopic findings, and aimed to assess the clinical usefulness of Doppler sonography. Methods: The duplex Doppler sonography of superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) of 10 patients with clinically inactive UC and 20 patients with active UC were evaluated by one radiologist who was blinded to clinical information. Peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity (EDV), resistance index (RI), and pulsatility index (PI) of the SMA and IMA were evaluated. All patients underwent biochemical and endoscopic evaluations thereafter. Correlation between disease activity by the Truelove-Witts classification and the Mayo scoring system was measured, and we compared hemodynamic parameters between active and inactive UC. Results: Correlation rate of disease activity between these two scoring systems was 93.3%. Flow velocities (PSV, p<0.001 and EDV, p=0.03) and PI (p=0.03) were significantly higher in patients with active UC than inactive UC. PSVs of the SMA and IMA were also significantly correlated with disease severity. The active UC could be accurately diagnosed using Doppler sonography (AUC=0.83; 95% confidence interval 0.68-0.99). Conclusions: In patients with UC, clinical stage was well matched with endoscopic disease activity. Doppler sonography was a readily available method, and PSV of SMA would be clinically useful in predicting of disease activity and severity. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2010;56:346-352)

Non-combustible Mg-Al-Si and Mg-Zn base alloys containing Ca were rapidly quenched via melt spinning. The melt-spun ribbons were aged, and then the effects of additional elements on age hardening behavior and microstructural change were investigated. Age hardening occurred after aging at 200℃ in the Mg-Al-Si-Ca alloys mainly due to the formation of Al-Ca or Mg₂Ca phases, whereas it occurred in the Mg-Zn-Ca alloys mostly due to the distribution of Mg_6Ca₂Zn₃ and Mg₂Ca. With the increase of Ca content, the hardness values of the aged ribbons were increased. In this study, Mg-6Zn-5Ca alloy showed the maximum peak hardness after aging at 200℃ for 1 hour. On the contrary, Mg-xZn-1.5Ca alloys couldn't show the pronounced peak hardness because of low Ca content.

<P>A new species, Paraphlomis koreana S.C.Ko et G.Y.Chung, from Korea is described and illustrated. The species is similar to P. albida Hand.-Mazz. in general vegetative characters and white corollas, but the new species is distinguished by its smaller stature, equally toothed 10-veined calyces, and pink-spotted lower corolla lips. P. koreana S.C.Ko et G.Y.Chung has been only found in Bogil-do Island, a small island in the Southern Ocean of Korea, and is the first species described from the genus in Korea.</P>

High-performance blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are developed. A concept of using multiple-emissive layer (EML) configuration is adopted. In this letter, bis(2-methy1-8-quinolinolate)-4-(phenylphenolato)Al (BAlq) and 9,10-di(naphtha-2-yl)anthracene (ADN), which serve n- and p-type EMLs, respectively, are used to evaluate and demonstrate the multi-EML concept for blue OLEDs. The thickness effect of individual EMLs and the number of EMLs, e.g., triple and quadruple EML components, on the power efficiency of blue OLEDs are systematically investigated. To illustrate the point, the total thickness of the emissive region in different blue OLEDs are kept contact at 30 nm for comparison. The power efficiency of blue OLEDs with a quadruple EML structure of BAlq/ADN/BAlq/ADN is about 40% higher than that of blue OLEDs having a single EML unit. The Commission Internationale deL'eclairage color coordinates of multi-EML OLEDs have values that represent the average of blue emissions from individual EMLs of BAlq and ADN.
