Three isolates belonging to the ascomycetous genus Zygotorulaspora were obtained from the fruits of Cornus officinalis and Smilax china, and flowers of Dendranthema zawadskii var. latilobum in Gongju-si, Korea. Phylogenetic Analyses of the LSU D1/D2 domain and ITS region sequences supported the recognition of two new species: Zygotorulaspora cornina sp. nov. (type strain NIBRFGC000500475 ¼ KACC93346PPP) and Zygotorulaspora smilacis sp. nov. (type strain NIBRFGC000500476 ¼ KACC93347PPP). The two novel species revealed no growth on D-Galactose, unlike the other six species in the genus Zygotorulaspora. They are distinguished from each other by their phylogenetic differences and phenotypic characteristics such as assimilation of xylitol, 5-keto-D-gluconate, and ethanol. All species in the genus Zygotorulaspora including the two novel species have phenotypic traits of genus Zygotorulaspora: asci are persistent, sucrose and raffinose are assimilated, and m-inositol is not required for growth, and they are mainly associated with plants.
Parmotrema clavuliferum and P. reticulatum are independent species
Ahn, Chorong,Moon, Kwang Hee The National Institute of Biological Resources 2016 Journal of species research Vol.5 No.2
Parmotrema clavuliferum ($R{\ddot{a}}s{\ddot{a}}nen$) Streimann and P. reticulatum (Taylor) M. Choisy (Parmeliaceae, lichenized Ascomycotina) have similar morphological characters such as wide lobes with soralia, reticulate-maculate on upper surface of lobes, and marginal cilia. In addition, they both produce salazinic acid and atranorin as major chemical substances. These similar properties found in both species have led to confusion in recognizing them as distinct species; however, P. clavuliferum is distinguished from the latter by capitate soralia on short laciniae which are always mottled white and by the production of fatty acid and gyrophoric acid together with salazinic acid. In addition, the most likely phylogenetic tree of these species shows that they are nested in well-supported monophyletic groups. Therefore, it is reasonable to recognize them as two separate species, P. clavuliferum and P. reticulatum.
Taxonomic Study on Six Yeast Species Unlisted in the National Species List of Korea
Ahn Chorong,Kim Soonok,Kim Changmu 한국균학회 2023 韓國菌學會誌 Vol.51 No.1
More than five hundreds of yeast species (including 9 variants) encompassing 142 genera and 48 classes of 2 phyla exist in Korea. However, only 173 species have been cataloged in the National Species List of Korea (NSLK), the backbone reference to claim sovereign rights over biological resources, as of December 2021, due to the lack of taxonomic descriptions, although some of these species are extensively used in industry. The present pilot study investigated the taxonomy of strains belonging to the six most widely used or frequently isolated yeast species (Meyeromyma guilliermondii, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Saccharomycopsis fibuligera, Wickerhamomyces anomalus, Candida tropicalis, and Papiliotrema flavescens) to include these species in the NSLK. Strains with diverse habitats and geographic origins were retrieved from the National Institute of Biological Resources culture collection. These strains clustered in the same clade as the type strains of the designated species according to phylogenetic analysis of the D1/D2 sequences. Moreover, we described the cell morphology and physiological characteristics of representative strains of each species. This study suggests that these six species are indigenous to Korea and can be accordingly listed in the NSLK.

<P>Cobalt oxide [Co3O4] anode materials were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal process, and the reaction conditions were optimized to provide good electrochemical properties. The effect of various synthetic reaction and heat treatment conditions on the structure and electrochemical properties of Co3O4 powder was also studied. Physical characterizations of Co3O4 are investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller [BET] method. The BET surface area decreased with values at 131.8 m2/g, 76.1 m2/g, and 55.2 m2/g with the increasing calcination temperature at 200°C, 300°C, and 400°C, respectively. The Co3O4 particle calcinated at 200°C for 3 h has a higher surface area and uniform particle size distribution which may result in better sites to accommodate Li+ and electrical contact and to give a good electrochemical property. The cell composed of Super P as a carbon conductor shows better electrochemical properties than that composed of acetylene black. Among the samples prepared under different reaction conditions, Co3O4 prepared at 200°C for 10 h showed a better cycling performance than the other samples. It gave an initial discharge capacity of 1,330 mAh/g, decreased to 779 mAh/g after 10 cycles, and then showed a steady discharge capacity of 606 mAh/g after 60 cycles.</P>

Indigenous yeasts in Korea have been actively studied since 1910 in light of various fields, including environment, food fermentation, brewing, and medicine. However, a complete list of indigenous yeast species has not been addressed or reported. In this study, a comprehensive analysis of the literature including yeast isolation from Korean materials and the strains preserved at culture collections was performed. The results of this study indicate the following: ⅰ) there are 128 genera and 681 species (including 26 variants) of yeast reported in Korea, ⅱ) the reported species were trimmed into 142 genera and 500 species (including 9 variants), ⅲ) among which only 166 species were registered in the National Species List of Korea (2020). Therefore, follow-up studies are required to register more indigenous yeast species in the National Species List of Korea.

Heterotopic pregnancy is the simultaneous presence of intrauterine and ectopic pregnancy. Although it is a very rare disease, the incidence of ectopic pregnancy is increasing as use of artificial reproductive technology increases. CASE 1; A 38-year-old twin pregnant nullipara woman with 6+2 weeks of gestation visited emergency room with abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding. Her current pregnancy was through in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer. On vaginal ultrasound, two intrauterine gestational sacs and left adnexal complex lesion were confirmed, and a large amount of fluid was confirmed in peritoneal cavity. She was diagnosed with heterotopic pregnancy and underwent emergency laparoscopic left salpingectomy. Of the twins with intrauterine pregnancy, one fetus missed abortion at 10+0 weeks of gestation, and the other was born full-term by cesarean section at 38+4 weeks of gestation. CASE 2; A 32-year-old primipara woman underwent intrauterine insemination after superovulation induction. she was visited to emergency room with abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding at 5+5 weeks of gestation. On vaginal ultrasound, four intrauterine gestational sacs (fetal pole and fetal heartbeat were confirmed in three sacs, but fetal poles were not seen in the other sac) and left adnexal complex lesion were confirmed, and a large amount of fluid was confirmed in peritoneal cavity. She was diagnosed with heterotopic pregnancy and underwent emergency laparoscopic left salpingectomy. Triple pregnancy, which was intrauterine pregnancy, was maintained as twin pregnancy by performing selective fetal reduction at 6+3 weeks of gestation. Twin fetuses were born full-term by cesarean section at 37+3 weeks of gestation. Even if intrauterine pregnancy is confirmed, the possibility of ectopic pregnancy cannot be excluded. Therefore, we recommend careful confirmation of adnexa through vaginal ultrasound even if intrauterine pregnancy is confirmed.

High grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) is a squamous cell abnormality. They are usually caused by chronic infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) and are found when a Pap test or biopsy are done. A 48-year-old woman visited emergency room because of lower abdominal pain. She had also vaginal bleeding since two weeks ago. In the test, urine hCG was negative. Ultrasonographic findings showed that about 7cm heteroechogenic round mass was in the endocervical canal. Computed Tomography (CT) showed About 7.7cm round mass of subtle enhancement in endocervical canal or left lateral wall of endocervical canal and hemorrhage in posterior to this lesion. Therefore, uterine myoma (submucosal or pedunculated) or infarcted polyp with hydrometra was suspected, and the next day hysterectomy was planned. She had hysterectomy with bilateral salpingectomy. When I grossly looked at the sample, myoma was suspected. But several days later, a biopsy result came out, and the results were HSIL, and leiomyoma. She was received routine post-operation care and discharged home. HSIL is usually found in the PAP smear and may be overlooked if the myoma is present. But they may be together. We report a case that HSIL lesion was found in cervix in a patient who was suspected of myoma.

Antioxidant Activity of Indigenous Trametes Species in Korea
( Minkyeong Kim ),( Chorong Ahn ),( Changmu Kim ) 한국균학회 2021 韓國菌學會誌 Vol.49 No.4
The fungal genus Trametes is globally distributed and comprises various wood-decay species, including the well-known medicinal mushroom Trametes versicolor , a popular remedy in traditional Asian medicine. Trametes species produce antioxidants, which have a wide range of health benefits. The pressent study evaluated seven indigenous Trametes species from Korea, which were cultivated in three different media (dextrose-yeast extract, DY; malt extract-yeast extract, MY; malt extract broth, MEB) and tested for antioxidant activity using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) assays. We found that the medium consumption rate did not significantly differ between the media and among the strains (72-76%). However, the T. versicolor strains had a relatively low consumption rate (14-65%). The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azinobis(3- ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS) tests demonstrated that culture filtrates of T. cf. junipericola, T. orientalis, T. suaveolens, and T. versicolor possessed antioxidant activity against damage from free radicals. In particular, T. cf. junipericola (DY) and T. versicolor (MY) had >80% activity in the DPPH and ABTS assays, compared with that of the positive control (ascorbic acid). Thus, our study identified promising candidates with substantial antioxidant activity among the indigenous strains of Trametes spp. from Korea.
