Muslim's Role in the Opposition to Marcos
Majul, Cesar Adib Center for International Studies, Inha University 1986 Pacific Focus Vol.1 No.2
The dramatic events in the Philippines which started on February 22, 1986, and culminated in the flight of President F. Marcos to dark Air Base on February 25 and subsequently to the United States for haven, demonstrated how the concerted effort of tens of thousands of unarmed citizens was able to determine certain political results. The events started when the Defense Minister and the Vice Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces openly broke up with Marcos, declared their alliance with the Aquino opposition and with supporters took control of two Army camps in Metro Manila. When an imminent danger appeared that troops loyal to Marcos would attack the camps, thousands of the Manila urban population (later on joined by persons from the nearby provinces) crowded the streets around the camps and barred entrance to them. This eventually led to the withdrawal of the tanks and troops sent to attack the "rebels".
