Abstract

This study presents the synthesis of novel silver/poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan/graphene (Ag/PVA/CHI/Gr) nanocomposite hydrogels by in situ electrochemical reduction of silver ions in the hydrogel matrix and their thorough characterization by UV–visible and Raman spectroscopies, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and silver release measurements. The influence of chitosan content on the incorporation and stabilization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was investigated, and we found that hydrogels with higher chitosan content contain higher amounts of AgNPs. In addition, the cytotoxicity and antibacterial activity of Ag/PVA/CHI/Gr nanocomposite hydrogels were evaluated. Based on in vitro investigations, the obtained materials exhibit diffusion-controlled release profiles over 28 days, strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacterial strains, and no cytotoxicity toward human and mice fibroblast cell lines.

Highlights

In situ electrochemical synthesis of silver nanoparticles in PVA/CHI/Gr hydrogels.

Effect of chitosan concentration on the amount of embedded silver nanoparticles.

Effect of chitosan concentration on the silver release kinetics.

Strong antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Abstract

Graphene (Gr) and natural polymer chitosan (CS) were introduced to hydroxyapatite (HAP) to produce a three-component composite coating, which was fabricated by cathodic electrophoretic deposition on Ti substrates in an ethanol suspension. These HAP/CS/Gr coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical measurements and found that the graphene into HAP/CS composites significantly improves their morphology, thermal stability, and bioactivity. Both HAP/CS and HAP/CS/Gr composite coatings are classified as non-cytotoxic when tested against healthy peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), while antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli could not be verified.

Abstract

We further generalise a construction–the fibre construction–that was developed in an earlier paper of the first two authors. The extension in this paper gives a polynomial-time reduction of CSP(H) for any relational system H to CSP(P) for any relational system P that meets a certain technical partition condition, that of being K3-partitionable.

Moreover, we define an equivalent condition on P, that of being block projective, and using this show that our construction proves NP-completeness for exactly those CSPs that are conjectured to be NP-complete by the CSP dichotomy classification conjecture made by Bulatov, Jeavons and Krohkin, and by Larose and Zádori. We thus provide two new combinatorial versions of the CSP dichotomy classification conjecture.

As with our previous version of the fibre construction, we are able to address restricted versions of the dichotomy conjecture. In particular, we reduce the Feder–Hell–Huang conjecture to the CSP dichotomy classification conjecture, and we prove the Kostochka–Nešetřil–Smolíková conjecture. Although these results were proved independently by Jonsson et al. and Kun respectively, we give different, shorter, proofs.

Abstract

The graphene based silver/hydroxyapatite/graphene (Ag/HAP/Gr) composite coatings were produced by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) on titanium to assemble porous bioactive homogenous coatings, with improved corrosion stability in simulated body fluid (SBF). Novel composite coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron analysis (XPS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The improved properties of graphene based coatings in respect to the graphene-free coatings, as a consequence of toughening action of graphene, were demonstrated: reduced surface cracks, better mechanical resistance (hardness and elastic modulus increased by 10%) and enhanced thermal stability, while the Ca/P ratio was closer to the stoichiometric value. The bioactivity of Ag/HAP/Gr composite coatings was proved by a newly formed apatite layer in SBF with enhanced corrosion stability, while antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli and noncytotoxicity against healthy peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) indicate the high potential for biomedical applications.

Highlights

Novel graphene based composite coating on titanium obtained by electrophoretic deposition.

Homogenous, non-toxic Ag/HAP/Gr coating with improved mechanical properties.

New apatite layer formation in SBF has proved the coating bioactivity.

Diminished bacterial growth of S. aureus and E. coli after only 3h of exposure.

Abstract

Refractory metal high entropy alloy HfNbTaTiZr with ultrafine grained structure and grain size of ≈80 nm was processed by high pressure torsion. The development of microstructure, lattice defects and mechanical properties with increasing strain was examined. Grain refinement of HfNbTaTiZr alloy deformed up to the equivalent strain e ≈ 50 resulted in a significant enhancement of strength while keeping sufficient ductility. However, further straining e > 100 led to a decrease of strength and the loss of ductility due to the decomposition of solid solution facilitated by vacancies introduced by severe plastic deformation.

Highlights

High entropy alloy HfNbTaTiZr was nanostructured by high pressure torsion.

Grain size of 80 nm was achieved by deformation to the equivalent strain e = 5.

Structure refinement resulted in remarkable enhancement of strength of the alloy.

Ductility remains sufficient for good workability.

Further deformation to very high strains resulted in loss of strength.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Interstitial free steel with ultrafine-grained (UFG) structure was prepared by high-pressure torsion (HPT). The development of the microstructure as a function of the number of HPT turns was studied at the centre, half-radius and periphery of the HPT-processed disks by X-ray line profile analysis (XLPA), positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) and electron microscopy. The dislocation densities and the dislocation cell sizes determined by XLPA were found to be in good agreement with those obtained by PAS. The evolution of the dislocation density, the dislocation cell and grain sizes, the vacancy cluster size, as well as the high-angle grain boundary (HAGB) fraction was determined as a function of the equivalent strain. It was found that first the dislocation density saturated, then the dislocation cell size reached its minimum value and finally the grain size got saturated. For very high strains after the saturation of grain size the HAGB fraction further increased. The PAS investigations revealed that vacancies introduced by severe plastic deformation agglomerated into small clusters consisting of 9-14 vacancies. The evolution of the yield strength calculated from the microhardness as a function of strain was explained by the development of the defect structure. (C) 2015 Acta Materialia Inc.
