<P>The architectonic subdivisions of the brain are believed to be functional modules, each processing parts of global functions. Previously, we showed that neurons in different regions operate in different firing regimes in monkeys. It is possible that firing regimes reflect differences in underlying information processing, and consequently the firing regimes in homologous regions across animal species might be similar. We analyzed neuronal spike trains recorded from behaving mice, rats, cats, and monkeys. The firing regularity differed systematically, with differences across regions in one species being greater than the differences in similar areas across species. Neuronal firing was consistently most regular in motor areas, nearly random in visual and prefrontal/medial prefrontal cortical areas, and bursting in the hippocampus in all animals examined. This suggests that firing regularity (or irregularity) plays a key role in neural computation in each functional subdivision, depending on the types of information being carried.</P>

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (PDE5i) on urinary continence recovery after bilateral nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy (BNSRP). Materials and Methods: Between 2002 and 2012, 137 of 154 consecutive patients who underwent BNSRP in our institution retrospectively divided into 3 groups that included patients taking PDE5i immediately after surgery (immediate PDE5i group, n=41), patients starting PDE5i at an outpatient clinic after discharge (PDE5i group, n=56), and patients taking no medication (non-PDE5i group, n=40). Using self-administered questionnaires, the proportion of patients who did not require incontinence pads (pad-free patients) was calculated preoperatively and at 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months after BNSRP. Severity of incontinence was determined based on the pad numbers and then compared among the 3 groups. Results: Proportions of pad-free patients and severity of incontinence initially deteriorated in all of the groups to the lowest values soon after undergoing BNSRP, with gradual improvement noted thereafter. The deterioration was most prominent in the immediate PDE5i group. As compared to the non-PDE5i group, both the PDE5i and immediate PDE5i groups exhibited a better final continence status. Conclusions: PDE5i improves final continence status. However, administration of PDE5i immediately after surgery causes a distinct temporary deterioration in urinary incontinence.

This study aimed to profile the microflora in infected root canals before and after root canal treatment using cultureindependent methods. Six infected root canals in singlerooted teeth with periapical lesions from five subjects were included. Quantification of total bacteria was performed by real-time PCR with primers targeting 16S rRNA genes. PCR products with universal 16S rRNA gene primers were cloned and partially sequenced, and bacterial identification at the species level was performed by comparative analysis with the GenBank database. The concentration of extracted DNA before treatment was higher than that after root canal treatment, although the difference was not statistically significant. Sequence analysis revealed that oral bacteria such as Fusobacterium, Streptococcus, Olsenella, and Pseudoramibacter detected in cases before root canal treatment disappeared after treatment. These results suggest that the root canal microflora are distinct before and after root canal treatment, and that treatment changes the microflora in both quantity and quality.

We estimated phenotypic selection on the height and number of flowering-stalks in a rosette annual Cardamine hirsuta by applying path analysis to the data collected at three natural populations located in central Japan. The path from rosette size was positively connected with the fruit production through the both height and number of flowering-stalks. In the all three populations, the paths from the number of stalks were more strongly connected with the fruit production than from the height of stalks. The paths from the rosette size showed similar magnitude with the number of stalks and the height of stalks. The direct path from rosette size to the fruit production was detected only at one site. These results suggest stronger phenotypic selection on the rosette size through the number of stalks than the height of stalks. The lateral branching rather than increment of individual inflorescence size is the major response to control the fruit production for C. hirsuta growing in a natural habitat.

This study looks into the status of work support at home in work support organizations. We propose the concept of "Virtual office" for job training. We are developing a home virtual office system to acquire IT skills and business manner for persons with disabilities. We executed the one-on-one training to evaluate this system.
Efficient Heuristics for Flowshop Scheduling for Minimizing the Makespan and Total Flowtime of Jobs

The problem of scheduling in permutation flowshops has been extensively investigated by many researchers. Recently, attempts are being made to consider more than one objective simultaneously and develop algorithms to obtain a set of Pareto-optimal solutions. Varadharajan et al. (2005) presented a multi-objective simulated-annealing algorithm (MOSA) for the problem of permutation-flowshop scheduling with the objectives of minimizing the makespan and the total flowtime of jobs. The MOSA uses two initial sequences obtained using heuristics, and seeks to obtain non-dominated solutions through the implementation of a probability function, which probabilistically selects the objective of minimizing either the makespan or the total flowtime of jobs. In this paper, the same problem of heuristically developing non-dominated sequences is considered. We propose an effective heuristics based on simulated annealing (SA), in which the weighted sum of the makespan and the total flowtime is used. The essences of the heuristics are in selecting the initial sequence, setting the weight and generating a solution in the search process. Using a benchmark problem provided by Taillard (1993), which was used in the MOSA, these conditions are extracted in a large-scale experiment. The non-dominated sets obtained from the existing algorithms and the proposed heuristics are compared. It was found that the proposed heuristics drastically improved the performance of finding the non-dominated frontier.

We investigated the stability of ionic configurations of the tip of the cantilever in non-contact AFM.; For this, we used a computational model that couples the ionic motion of the MgO surface and the oscillating cantilever. The motion of ions was connected to the oscillating cantilever using a coupling method that had been recently developed. The adhesive process on the ionic MgO surface leads to energy dissipation of the cantilever. It is shown that limited types of ionic configurations of the tip are stable during the adhesive process. Based on the present computational model, we discuss the adhesive mechanism leading to energy dissipation.

We have developed the dynamic reconfigurable processor DS-HIE for the streaming processing in our laboratory. The software development environment for the DS-HIE processor was not developed. So it is difficult to evaluate the performance of the DS-HIE processor by using practical applications. Therefore, this paper explains about the development of the compiler for the DS-HIE processor, which supports high-level programming language. The compiler consists of the Front-end part and the Back-end part. Since it will take time to develop a high quality Front-end from the scratch, so we selected the COINS compiler as the Front-end compiler. The Back-end compiler extracts the parts executed by the DS-HIE processor in the input program, and then maps the operations to the Function Units in the DS-HIE processor. After that, the Back-end compiler routes wires between the Function Units. The applications to evaluate the compiler were one dimensional DCT and row processing of LDCP decoding. As a compilation result, the average usage of the function unit was 83%
