      • NATURE AS EXTENDED-SELF: SACRED NATURE RELATIONSHIP AND IMPLICATIONS FOR RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION BEHAVIOR

        Vimala Kunchamboo,Christina K. C. Lee,Jan Brace Govan 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2016 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2016 No.7

This article explores alternate ways to conceptualize self-nature relationship, that is, how nature in general, rather than specific nature places, become part of the extended self and how this influences responsible consumption. An ethnography, using participant observation, iterative in-depth interviews and photographs, was used to understand self-nature relationship and consumption behavior. The study was conducted in Malaysia using the English language as the medium of communication. The results suggest three levels of extended-self, reflecting the individual’s depth of relationship with nature; relational extended-self, encapsulated-self and assimilated-self. Nature as extended self, then, influences meanings attached to nature which results in different levels of attachment with nature; these are, functional, emotional, religious and spiritual attachment. When nature is perceived as separate from self, consumption behaviour is motivated by self-interest or self-preservation. As nature experiences are internalised, individuals begin to form emotional connections which initiates the process of self-extension whereby nature is progressively seen as part of the self. At the higher level, stronger affiliation with nature may result in religious or spiritual attachment, which motivates further assimilation of the self with nature and a sense of oneness with the broader universe promoting communal relationship and mutual gain. Our study contributes theoretically with the discovery of three dimensions of extended self and how extended self influences responsible consumption. Practically, these insights are valuable for public policy, social marketing and sustainability programs, for example, it highlights a possible solution to our unsustainable consumption behaviour which is, programs or activities which encourage our citizens to spend time with nature.

Oxidative steam reforming of isobutanol over Ni/g-Al2O3 catalysts: A comparison with thermodynamic equilibrium analysis

Vimala Dhanala,Debaprasad Shee,Sunil K. Maity 한국공업화학회 2015 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.27 No.-

Present work provides a systematic investigation of oxidative steam reforming (OSR) and comparisonswith steam reforming (SR) of isobutanol over g-Al2O3 supported nickel catalysts. Catalysts characterizationresults demonstrated that majority of nickel oxide was present as dispersed NiAl2O4. The hydrogen yieldand selectivity to CO and methane were somewhat lesser for OSR compared to SR. The H2/CO mole ratio inthe range of 8–10 was observed under the experimental conditions. The experimental results werematched well with equilibrium products compositions. The spent catalysts were further characterized toelucidate chemical and morphological changes of the catalysts during SR and OSR.

Modeling and Filter Design through Analysis of Conducted EMI in Switching Power Converters

Vimala, R.,Baskaran, K.,Aravind Britto, K.R. The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2012 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.12 No.4

This paper presents a filter analysis of conducted Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI) in switching power converters (SPC) based on noise impedances. The EMI characteristics of SPC can be analytically deduced from a circuit theoretical viewpoint. The analytical noise model is investigated to get a full understanding of the EMI mechanism. It is shown that with suitable and justified model, filters pertinent to EMI noise is investigated. The EMI noise is identified by time domain measurements associated with an isolated half-bridge ac-dc converter. Practical filters like LC filter, ${\pi}$ filter and complete EMI filters are investigated. The proposed analysis and results can provide a guideline for improving the effectiveness of filtering schemes in SPC. Experimental results are also included to verify the validity of the proposed method. The results obtained satisfy the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) class A and class B regulations.

      • EGO-SELF TO ECO-SELF: HOW DO WE FORM THE ECOLOGICAL SELF?

        Vimala Kunchamboo,Christina K. C Lee,Jan Brace Govan 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2018 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2018 No.07

This research provides insight into how socialisation and learning aids consumers to form their ecological self. Past research establishes that ecological self, expressed as environmental identity, positively drives responsible consumption, but there is a lack of understanding of how consumers form their ecological selves and environmental identities. The aim is to provide a broader motivational structure that drives the formation of nature identity and its influence on responsible consumption behaviour. The ethnographic data uncovers the cognitive thoughts, affections, symbolic inferences and nature experiences of participants guiding the formation of the ecological self, attachment to nature and ecological worldviews, which then drives responsible consumption behaviour. The conceptual framework outlines the overall motivation driving ecological self and identifies emotional, religious and spiritual attachments to guide the development of ecocentric, theocentric and transcentric ecological worldviews. This research mainly contributes to theory development and social marketing efforts.

A Compact Quantum Model for Cylindrical Surrounding Gate MOSFETs using High-k Dielectrics

Vimala, P.,Balamurugan, N.B. The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2014 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.9 No.2

In this paper, an analytical model for Surrounding Gate (SG) metal-oxide- semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs) considering quantum effects is presented. To achieve this goal, we have used variational approach for solving the Poission and Schrodinger equations. This model is developed to provide an analytical expression for inversion charge distribution function for all regions of device operation. This expression is used to calculate the other important parameters like inversion charge density, threshold voltage, drain current and gate capacitance. The calculated expressions for the above parameters are simple and accurate. This paper also focuses on the gate tunneling issue associated with high dielectric constant. The validity of this model was checked for the devices with different dimensions and bias voltages. The calculated results are compared with the simulation results and they show good agreement.

The influence of learning style in understanding analogies and 2D animations in embryology course

        Suresh Narayanan,Vimala Ananthy 대한해부학회 2018 Anatomy & Cell Biology Vol.51 No.4

Undergraduate students struggle to comprehend embryology because of its dynamic nature. Studies have recommended using a combination of teaching methods to match the student’s learning style. But there has been no study to describe the effect of such teaching strategy over the different types of learners. In the present study, an attempt has been made to teach embryology using the combination of analogies and simple 2D animations made with Microsoft powerpoint software. The objective of the study is to estimate the difference in academic improvement and perception scale between the different types of learners after introducing analogies and 2D animation in a lecture environment. Based on Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic (VARK) scoring system the learners were grouped into unimodal and multimodal learners. There was significant improvement in post-test score among the unimodal (P<0.001) and multimodal learners (P<0.001). When the posttest score was compared between the two groups, the multimodal learners performed better the unimodal learners (P=0.018). But there was no difference in the perception of animations and analogies and long-term assessment between the groups. The multimodal learners performed better than unimodal learners in short term recollection, but in long term retention of knowledge the varied learning style didn’t influence its outcome.
