This study introduces a Malmquist-Luenberger (ML) productivity index using non-parametric linear programming (LP) methods as an alternative measure of green growth by taking into account both desirable and undesirable outputs together as opposed to conventional measures considered only desirable outputs. We used a panel data set consisting of agricultural activity in 50 states in the U.S. since 1990 as a case study. We found that 1) ML productivity in U.S. agriculture increased by 1.3% per year across the 50 states, which suggests that U.S. agriculture may be slowly approaching a lower carbon green growth economy, 2) Ignoring undesirable bad outputs overestimates annual productivity growth, 3) The average annual ML productivity varies considerably across states, ranging from a 2% decrease for Alaska to an increase of 7% for Arizona, and 4) The fluctuation of cumulative ML productivity follows similar patterns of technical efficiency during the 1992.2007 periods.

Drawing on the differences in organizational forms and practices between shareholder-oriented firms (e.g., Sony and Nissan) and internally-coordinated firms (e.g., Toyota and Canon) in Japan, this paper examines the antecedents and consequences of the coexistence of contrasting rationales in a firm's governance system. In contrast to the decoupling or institutional approach, the paper investigates the functional roles of shareholder-oriented and internally-coordinated governance mechanisms within a theoretical framework that distinguishes the rationale for resource allocation from that of resource acquisition. The results indicate that the adoption of shareholder-oriented organizational forms and practices in a firm is related to the principles of capital markets for resource acquisition, whereas the continuation with internal coordination mechanisms is influenced by the Japanese coordination rationale for resource allocation. This suggests that firms should show separate responses to contrasting rationales in corporate governance and that the functional fit in each dimension improves performance.
Prevention of Electrochemical Degradation in Bioelectrochemical System by Electrical Control

The bioelectrochemical system is recognized for its potential as a useful future environmental-energy techno-logy in terms of sustainable wastewater treatment and green energy production<sup>1,2)</sup>. Though the bioelectrochemical technology has rapidly developed over the past 20 years, until now, the scale-up of the bioelectrochemical system to the level of industrial application in the real world has not been achieved. The problems in bioelectrochemical degradation such as voltage reversal phenomenon and power overshoot should be overcome in order to achieve a proven level of wastewater treatment efficiency and power generation<sup>3)</sup>. In this study, three multi-electrode-embedded microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were sequentially connected and operated in series and parallel modes, fed by effluent of an anaerobic digester continuously operated using swine wastewater. The MFCs connected in parallel showed the higher power density compared to the series mode. The bioelectrochemical degradations were prevented by MFCs connected in parallel and connected with power management system despite inevitable electrical malfunction conditions by imbalance organic loadings. These findings can lead to be closer real application of bioelectrochemical systems for sustainable wastewater treatment and bioenergy generation.
Machine Learning Techniques with Item Response Data

This is a two-pronged study. Two aims of this study are both interested in comparison of 1) different R IRT (Item Response Theory) packages and 2) different machine learning techniques. The first part of the present study addresses the performance of a couple of psychometric software available in R. Then, using item parameters from real data sets from the Program of International Student Assessment 2015, three machine learning techniques (classification tree, random forest, naïve Bayes) are assessed in the second part. Between these two parts, connections of IRT and ML are briefly described and reviewed with reference. Findings are 1) two comparisons of two sets of packages for each IRT model are not informative (from the part I) and 2) the classifiers of random forest and naïve Bayes algorithms performed better than the classification tree, which confirms that more information leads to more accurate prediction and ensemble approaches are better than single tree approaches. (from the part II). Finally, implications and caveats of this study are provided.
A Hybrid Stereoscopic Video Coding Scheme Based on MPEG-2 and HEVC for 3DTV Services

<P>Recently, 3DTV has drawn much attention as a new broadcasting service. In spite of technical advances in 3DTV broadcasting services, there are two barriers that hinder the new services from being launched for terrestrial broadcasting: the lack of available bandwidth for transmission of additional-view video via terrestrial channel and backward compatibility with the legacy 2-D HDTV services. As an alternative, a hybrid stereoscopic video coding scheme is proposed for a stereoscopic 3DTV service, where one-view video is transmitted through the legacy broadcasting systems and the other one is delivered via broadband networks to which TV terminals are connected. In this paper, the proposed hybrid stereoscopic video coding scheme incorporates an MPEG-2 codec for backward compatibility with a legacy 2-D HDTV service and an HEVC codec with inter-view prediction coding as an extension to encode additional-view video sequences with high coding efficiency. The proposed inter-view prediction coding scheme in the extended HEVC incorporates an advanced motion and disparity vector prediction (AMDVP) method for enhanced motion- and disparity-compensated coding. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid stereoscopic video coding scheme achieves an average coding efficiency of 38.22% (32.86%) in BD-rate or 1.394 dB (1.235 dB) in BD-PSNR for the out-band (in-band) scenario.</P>
