Test on the anchoring components of steel shear keys in precast shear walls

        Shao-Dong Shen,Peng Pan,Wen-Feng Li,Qi-Song Miao,Run-Hua Gong 국제구조공학회 2019 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.24 No.6

Prefabricated reinforced-concrete shear walls are used extensively in building structures because they are convenient to construct and environmentally sustainable. To make large walls easier to transport, they are divided into smaller segments and then assembled at the construction site using a variety of connection methods. The present paper proposes a precast shear wall assembled using steel shear keys, wherein the shear keys are fixed on the embedded steel plates of adjacent wall segments by combined plug and fillet welding. The anchoring strength of shear keys is known to affect the mechanical properties of the wall segments. Loading tests were therefore performed to observe the behavior of precast shear wall specimens with different anchoring components for shear keys. The specimen with insufficient strength of anchoring components was found to have reduced stiffness and lateral resistance. Conversely, an extremely high anchoring strength led to a short-column effect at the base of the wall segments and low deformation ability. Finally, for practical engineering purposes, a design approach involving the safety coefficient of anchoring components for steel shear keys is suggested.

      • The influences of equivalent viscous damping ratio determination on direct displacement-based design of un-bonded post-tensioned (UPT) concrete wall systems

Shao-Dong Shen,Anqi Gu 국제구조공학회 2022 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.30 No.6

Recent years, direct displacement-based design (DDBD) procedure is proposed for the design of un-bonded posttensioned (UPT) concrete wall systems. In the DDBD procedure, the determination of the equivalent viscous damping (EVD) ratio is critical since it would influence the strength demand of the UPT wall systems. Nevertheless, the influence of EVD ratio determination of the UPT wall systems were not thoroughly evaluated. This study was aimed to investigate the influence of different EVD ratio determinations on the DDBD procedure of UPT wall systems. Case study structures with four, twelve and twenty storeys have been designed with DDBD procedure considering different EVD ratio determinations. Nonlinear time history analysis was performed to validate the design results of those UPT wall systems. And the simulation results showed that the global responses of the case study structures were influenced by the EVD ratio determination.

      • Refining and Validating a Two-stage and Web-based Cancer Risk Assessment Tool for Village Doctors in China

        Shen, Xing-Rong,Chai, Jing,Feng, Rui,Liu, Tong-Zhu,Tong, Gui-Xian,Cheng, Jing,Li, Kai-Chun,Xie, Shao-Yu,Shi, Yong,Wang, De-Bin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.24

The big gap between efficacy of population level prevention and expectations due to heterogeneity and complexity of cancer etiologic factors calls for selective yet personalized interventions based on effective risk assessment. This paper documents our research protocol aimed at refining and validating a two-stage and web-based cancer risk assessment tool, from a tentative one in use by an ongoing project, capable of identifying individuals at elevated risk for one or more types of the 80% leading cancers in rural China with adequate sensitivity and specificity and featuring low cost, easy application and cultural and technical sensitivity for farmers and village doctors. The protocol adopted a modified population-based case control design using 72, 000 non-patients as controls, 2, 200 cancer patients as cases, and another 600 patients as cases for external validation. Factors taken into account comprised 8 domains including diet and nutrition, risk behaviors, family history, precancerous diseases, related medical procedures, exposure to environment hazards, mood and feelings, physical activities and anthropologic and biologic factors. Modeling stresses explored various methodologies like empirical analysis, logistic regression, neuro-network analysis, decision theory and both internal and external validation using concordance statistics, predictive values, etc..

PRECONDITIONED GAUSS-SEIDEL ITERATIVE METHOD FOR Z-MATRICES LINEAR SYSTEMS

        Shen, Hailong,Shao, Xinhui,Huang, Zhenxing,Li, Chunji Korean Mathematical Society 2011 대한수학회보 Vol.48 No.2

For Ax = b, it has recently been reported that the convergence of the preconditioned Gauss-Seidel iterative method which uses a matrix of the type P = I + S (${\alpha}$) to perform certain elementary row operations on is faster than the basic Gauss-Seidel method. In this paper, we discuss the adaptive Gauss-Seidel iterative method which uses P = I + S (${\alpha}$) + $\bar{K}({\beta})$ as a preconditioner. We present some comparison theorems, which show the rate of convergence of the new method is faster than the basic method and the method in [7] theoretically. Numerical examples show the effectiveness of our algorithm.

Hierarchical Lung Field Segmentation With Joint Shape and Appearance Sparse Learning

        Yeqin Shao,Yaozong Gao,Yanrong Guo,Yonghong Shi,Xin Yang,Dinggang Shen IEEE 2014 IEEE transactions on medical imaging Vol.33 No.9

<P>Lung field segmentation in the posterior-anterior (PA) chest radiograph is important for pulmonary disease diagnosis and hemodialysis treatment. Due to high shape variation and boundary ambiguity, accurate lung field segmentation from chest radiograph is still a challenging task. To tackle these challenges, we propose a joint shape and appearance sparse learning method for robust and accurate lung field segmentation. The main contributions of this paper are: 1) a robust shape initialization method is designed to achieve an initial shape that is close to the lung boundary under segmentation; 2) a set of local sparse shape composition models are built based on local lung shape segments to overcome the high shape variations; 3) a set of local appearance models are similarly adopted by using sparse representation to capture the appearance characteristics in local lung boundary segments, thus effectively dealing with the lung boundary ambiguity; 4) a hierarchical deformable segmentation framework is proposed to integrate the scale-dependent shape and appearance information together for robust and accurate segmentation. Our method is evaluated on 247 PA chest radiographs in a public dataset. The experimental results show that the proposed local shape and appearance models outperform the conventional shape and appearance models. Compared with most of the state-of-the-art lung field segmentation methods under comparison, our method also shows a higher accuracy, which is comparable to the inter-observer annotation variation.</P>

Investigation on Low-Frequency Sound Absorption Properties of PVB Micro-/Nanofiber Membranes

        Xiaofei Shao,Jiahui Shen,Xiong Yan 한국섬유공학회 2023 Fibers and polymers Vol.24 No.8

In this study, polyvinyl butyral (PVB) was used as raw material, combined with electrospinning and microperforation process to prepare micro-/nanofiber membranes with excellent low-frequency sound absorption performance. To comprehensively explore the influence mechanisms of fiber diameter, multi-layer structure, and microperforated structure on the sound absorption performance, experiment and theoretical analysis were both conducted. Experimental results showed that appropriately reducing the fiber diameter, increasing the number of PVB membrane layers, and setting microperforated structure and cavity could improve the sound absorption performance in the low-frequency range. By adjusting the number of layers and the microperforation structure, the effective sound absorption band range of the fiber membrane can also be adjusted to better meet the sound absorption requirements. When the number of fiber layers was 20, the perforation rate was 1%, the perforation diameter was 0.6 mm, and the cavity depth was 40 mm, the PVB fiber membrane had peaks of 0.8483 and 0.9792 at 350 Hz and 480 Hz, respectively. Theoretical analysis showed that the acoustic electrical analogy model can well predict the resonance frequency and sound absorption peak of fiber membrane, and proved that microporous fiber membrane had both porous and resonant sound absorption mechanisms. These lightweight fiber membranes have great potential for application in sound absorption, such as in transportation, construction, and instrumentation.

Echinacoside Ameliorates Cyclophosphamide-Induced Bladder Damage in Mice

        Yunpeng Shao,Yu Liu,Baixin Shen,Qiao Zhou,Zhongqing Wei 한국식품영양과학회 2022 Journal of medicinal food Vol.25 No.7

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is featured by apoptosis and chronic inflammation in bladder tissue. We aimed to evaluate the effect of echinacoside (ECH), which is known to modulate inflammation and apoptosis on IC using relevant models. We established a mouse model of cystitis using cyclophosphamide (CYP) and treated human urothelium cells (SV-HUC-1) with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) + ATP as in vitro model. The bladder function was tested by urodynamics. Apoptosis of bladder cells was assessed by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling assay. Expressions of apoptosis-associated and inflammation-related proteins were assessed using western blotting. Treatment with ECH significantly improved bladder function, reduced inflammatory damage, and decreased apoptosis in the models. Furthermore, ECH decreased the phosphorylation levels of IκB and NF-κB(p65), and upregulated the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), which are related to apoptosis and inflammation in CYP-induced mouse cystitis. Moreover, ECH did not reduce apoptosis of urothelial cells after treatment with PPARγ antagonist GW9662. Our findings suggest that ECH might have protective effect against IC in bladder and be mediated through modulation of the PPARγ/NF-κB pathway.
