The effect of health care reform: Testing the stability of systematic risk
Sewell, Daniel K.,Song, Joon-Jin The Korean Data and Information Science Society Vol.21 No.5
As the U.S. Congress has continued to debate over the health care reform pushed by President Obama, there is an ample reason to believe that the systematic risk of the health care industry, especially health care plan providers, is increasing. This study measures and compares the systematic risk of two health care industry indexes and one portfolio of health care plan providers from before and after the introduction of the health care legislation into Congress in September, 2009. The Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) is used to measure the systematic risk, and a dummy variable approach and the Chow test are used to formally compare the systematic risk from before and after the introduction of the legislation.
Vol.22 No.1
This paper considers the Expectancy-Value Model of Motivation in relation to poorly motivated false beginner Korean college students for the purposes of both showing the model is valid, as well as providing preliminary insights on these students for future research. This paper begins by considering this model with respect to the Korean educational system. In doing so, an overview of the teacher`s role and the expectations inherent in it in the Korean context are discussed. Following this, a link between the fulfillment of these expectations and students` expectancy of learning is suggested. This paper next shows experimental evidence suggesting that poorly motivated false beginner Korean college students` lowered level of motivation can be reasonably explained by them having a lowered expectancy of learning. This paper further shows that within these students, there is a general covariance of expectancy and motivation for different classroom activities. This paper thus provides support for the validity of the Expectancy-Value Model of Motivation within the Korean context, as well as providing a framework for understanding some of the critical issues faced when teaching English to these students.

It has been reported for several decades that microbes, which naturally contaminate cotton fibres during crop growth and subsequent storage can have an adverse effect on the structural quality of cotton lint. Although several studies have analysed the relationship between numbers of Gram-negative bacteria or bacterial endotoxin and particular physical properties, these studies have been limited to cotton from the United States, and the possible effects of fungal contamination have not been examined in detail. This study quantified the Gram-negative bacteria and fungal cells, as well as measuring concentrations of bacterial endotoxin and fungal glucan, on cotton lint samples from international sources. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients calculated between these results and quality data analysed by an automated testing instrument revealed several significant correlations. Findings included inverse correlations between the biological contamination parameters and fibre elongation, micronaire and reflectance. The possible causes and implications of these findings were also discussed.
