<P>Socheongryong-Tang (SCRT) is a natural medicine prescription that has been mainly used in East Asia for the treatment of inflammatory disorders, including asthma and allergic rhinitis. The present study evaluated the anti-inflammatory effects of SCRT on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells and in a rat model of carrageenan (CA)-induced paw edema. Levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in the culture supernatant were quantified and nitric oxide (NO) production was monitored. In addition, the effect of SCRT on the protein expression of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) was assessed by western blot analysis. Furthermore, the effects of SCRT on acute inflammation <I>in vivo</I> and changes in the histomorphometry and histopathology of paw skin were observed using CA-treated rats. SCRT (1 mg/ml) inhibited the LPS-induced changes in the protein expression of NF-κB, JNK, ERK1/2, iNOS and COX-2, as well as the production of NO, PGE2 and cytokines. In the rat paw edema assay, administration of 1 g/kg of lyophilized powder obtained from the aqueous extracts of SCRT for 3 consecutive days inhibited the CA-induced increases in skin thickness, mast cell degranulation, and infiltration of inflammatory cells in the ventral and dorsal pedis skin within 4 h. These results demonstrated that SCRT exerts its anti-inflammatory activities in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells through decreasing the production of inflammatory mediators, including PGE2, NO and cytokines, via suppression of the NF-κB and JNK and ERK1/2 signaling pathways. In addition, the data of the CA-induced paw edema indicated an anti-edema effect of SCRT. SCRT (1 g/kg) reduced acute edematous inflammation through inhibition of mast cell degranulation and infiltration of inflammatory cells. Therefore, the present study provided scientific evidence for the anti-inflammatory activities of SCRT as well as the underlying mechanisms.</P>

For a multiprocessor System-on-Chip (MPSoC) to achieve high performance via parallelism, we must consider how to partition a given application into different components and map the components onto multiple processors. In this paper, we propose a software pipeline–based partitioning method with cyclic dependent task management and communication optimization. During task partitioning, simultaneously considering computation load balance and communication optimization can cause interference, which leads to performance loss. To address this issue, we formulate their constraints and apply an integer linear programming approach to find an optimal partitioning result — one that requires a trade-off between these two factors. Experimental results on a reconfigurable MPSoC platform demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, with 20% to 40% performance improvements compared to a traditional software pipeline–based partitioning method.

After spinal cord injury (SCI), endogenous neural stem cells are activated and migrate to the injury site where they differentiate into astrocytes, but they rarely differentiate into neurons. It is difficult for brain-derived information to be transmitted through the injury site after SCI because of the lack of neurons that can relay neural information through the injury site, and the functional recovery of adult mammals is difficult to achieve. The development of bioactive materials, tissue engineering, stem cell therapy, and physiotherapy has provided new strategies for the treatment of SCI and shown broad application prospects, such as promoting endogenous neurogenesis after SCI. In this review, we focus on novel approaches including tissue engineering, stem cell technology, and physiotherapy to promote endogenous neurogenesis and their therapeutic effects on SCI. Moreover, we explore the mechanisms and challenges of endogenous neurogenesis for the repair of SCI.

<P><I>Patinopecten yessoensis</I>, is a species of scallop and a marine bivalve mollusk. In traditional East Asian medicine, scallop meat is used as a drug for the treatment of diabetes, pollakisuria, and indigestion. The present study was conducted in order to examine the potential anticancer effects of scallop flesh extract (SE) on MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. An MTT assay was used to evaluate cell viability and flow cytometry was used for the assessment of cell cycle distribution and apoptosis. The alteration in protein expression level was determined by western blot analysis, and the amounts of docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid in the SE were measured by gas chromatography. SE inhibited the growth of MCF-7 human breast cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner by inducing G0/G1 phase arrest. The cell cycle arrest was associated with the upregulation of p53 and p21, and downregulation of G1 phase-associated cyclin D1/cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk) 4 and cyclin E1/Cdk 2. In addition, SE-mediated cell cycle arrest was associated with the promotion of apoptosis, as indicated by the expression of apoptosis-associated proteins and changes in nuclear morphology. SE appeared to induce the mitochondrial apoptotic cascade, as indicated by a decreased expression of Bcl-2, activation of Bcl-2 associated X protein, release of cytochrome c, decrease in procaspase-3, and an increase in cleaved-poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). Furthermore, the expression levels of Fas-associated via death domain and cleaved caspase-8 were increased in a SE dose-dependent manner. Taken together, these results suggest that the intrinsic and extrinsic pathways of apoptosis are associated with the anticancer effects of SE on MCF-7 cells. Thus, SE may be a suitable candidate for the treatment and prevention of human breast cancer.</P>

Multi-axis deformation (MAD) tests were performed on a low carbon microalloyed steel with different process parameters. The effect of temperature and strain on the microstructure evolution were analyzed. The strain reversal effect was observed from the comparison between the microstructure resulting from the MAD process and the one from a uniaxial deformation process. However, with 0.3 strain per pass and the alternating compression time equal to 10 or more during the MAD process, ultra fine structures were obtained at deformation temperature below 800 °C. Due to the microalloyed elements in the tested steel, nanometer sized precipitates were introduced under MAD conditions, which also contributed to the microstructure refinement.

Objectives : To investigate the therapeutic effect and underlying mechanisms of rhein on renal fibrosis in diabetic rats. Methods : Diabetic nephropathy (DN) was induced in adult Wistar rats via introperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ) (20 mg/kg/d) for three consecutive days. Two days after the last dose of STZ, rhein was administered to the diabetic rats at a dose of 25 mg/kg or 50 mg/kg, twice a day by gavage, respectively. Following 28 days treatment with rhein, the plasma glucose and creatinine levels were measured, the renal levels of TGF-${\beta}1$ protein and mRNA were examined, and the fibronectin mRNA levels were also determined. Results : Rhein significantly inhibited the increased plasma glucose and creatinine levels of diabetic rats in a dose- and a time-dependent way. Immunohistochemical analysis showed both doses of rhein markedly attenuated elevated induction of renal TGF-${\beta}1$ protein expressions in diabetic rats. Additionally, the high dose of rhein improved both TGF-${\beta}1$ and fibronectin mRNA expressions, while the low dose of rhein only alleviated fibronectin mRNA expressions. Conclusions : Rhein can improve renal fibrosis in diabetic nephropathy rats, and which may be mediated through inhibition of the renal mRNA expressions of TGF-${\beta}1$ and fibronectin.

<P>Anxiety during nicotine withdrawal (NicW) is a key risk factor for smoking relapse. Semen<I> Ziziphi Spinosae</I> (SZS), which is a prototypical hypnotic-sedative herb in Oriental medicine, has been clinically used to treat insomnia and general anxiety disorders for thousands of years. Thus, the present study evaluated the effects of the aqueous extract of SZS (AESZS) on NicW-induced anxiety in male rats that received subcutaneous administrations of nicotine (Nic) (0.4 mg/kg, twice a day) for 7 d followed by 4 d of withdrawal. During NicW, the rats received four intragastric treatments of AESZS (60 mg/kg/d or 180 mg/kg/d). AESZS dose-dependently attenuated NicW-induced anxiety-like behaviors in the elevated plus maze (EPM) tests and 180 mg/kg/d AESZS inhibited NicW-induced increases in plasma corticosterone. Additionally, the protein and mRNA expressions of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) and CRF type 1 receptor (CRF1R) increased in the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) during NicW, but these changes were suppressed by 180 mg/kg/d AESZS. A post-AESZS infusion of CRF into the CeA abolished the attenuation of anxiety by AESZS and 180 mg/kg/d AESZS suppressed NicW-induced increases in norepinephrine and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-phenylglycol levels in the CeA. The present results suggest that AESZS ameliorated NicW-induced anxiety via improvements in CRF/CRF1R and noradrenergic signaling in the CeA.</P>
