        Effect of Si Addition on Kinetics of Martensitic Hot-Work Die Steel During Tempering

        Dilatometry measurement, transmission electron microscope (TEM), and a three-dimensional atom probe (3DAP) are utilized to study how adding Si affects the kinetics of martensitic steel during tempering. The results show that both the tempering transformation temperature and the activation energy of martensitic hot-work die steel increase remarkably when Si is added. Meanwhile, the film-type retained austenite and the Si-rich region adjacent to the carbides are each observed in tempered martensitic steels. The results suggest that coarsening of carbides is efficiently inhibited and softening of steels is sufficiently delayed

        A Case Study: Effects of Foot Reflexotherapy in an Infant with Sensorineural Hearing Loss

        Sensoryneuronal hearing loss (SNHL) is one type of hearing impairment. The incidence of hearing loss (HL) is 1e3 per 1000 births. Complementary therapies may be effective in addressing the maladies of infants with HL. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of foot reflexotherapy in an infant with SNHL. The patient was a 3-month-old infant with SNHL. Pretest and post-test for HL were conducted using an audiologic method (auditory brainstem responses) combined with behavioral audiometry. The subject was treated with foot reflexotherapy for 30 min per session four times per week for a period of 24 weeks. Foot reflexotherapy was effective in auditory recuperation of an infant with SNHL. The results of this novel study suggest that foot reflexotherapy can be an effective complementary treatment for infants with SNHL, especially for those 3 to 9 months of age.

        VEGF Promoter Polymorphism Confers an Increased Risk of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension in a Chinese Population

        Purpose: Evidence on the contribution of genes to the hereditary predisposition to pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is limited. Materials and Methods: In this study, we hypothesized that single nucleotide variants in vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene may alter gene function and expression and may be associated with PAH risk. Five putatively functional loci (rs699947C>A and rs833061T>C in the promoter, rs3025040C>T, rs10434G>A and rs3025053G>A in the 3’-UTR) in the VEGF gene were genotyped and analyzed in a retrospective study of 587 patients with PAH and 736 healthy subjects from southern China. Results: We found that the rs833061T>C polymorphism was significantly associated with PAH risk, while the other single nucleotidepolymorphisms were not. Compared to carriers with TT genotype, those with rs833061C variant genotype (CT/CC) had an increased risk of PAH (odds ratio=1.47, 95% confidence interval=1.18–1.83, p=0.001). Functional assays indicated that CT/CC variant genotype had significantly higher mRNA levels of VEGF in peripheral blood mononuclear cells than TT genotype (p=0.021). Luciferase reporter assay indicated that having a C allele conferred a significantly higher transcription activity than that with a T allele. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the functional polymorphism rs833061T>C in VEGF gene promoter modulates VEGF expressionand may be a valuable biomarker for predicting PAH susceptibility.

        We investigate the dynamics of the (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear Dirac equation generalized from the traditional Thirring model. The effects of a diagonal external potential and a parameterized nonlinearity on the features of the system’s dynamical evolution are highlighted, specifically for a Zeeman-field external potential and a nonlinear parametric setting, which lead to bright soliton features.

        Inhibitory effects of two 1,3,4-oxadiazoles on larval growth and α-amylase in the midguts of Mythimna separata larvae

        1,3,4-Oxadiazoles are a group of diverse pharmaceuticals with a variety of biological activities. The insecticidalactivities of 2,5-diphenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole (Oxa 1) and 1,3,4-oxadiazolyl pyridazinone (Oxa 2) against the armywormMythimna separata have been reported. In the present study, we focused on the antifeedant, larval growthregulation, and larvicidal activities of Oxa 1 and 2 against armyworm larvae and the effects of Oxa 1 and 2 onα-amylase in the larval midgut. The structural effects of 1,3,4-oxadiazoles as insecticides were also observed. Longer exposure to increasing concentrations of Oxa 1 and 2 contributed positively to higher antifeedant indexesand slower growth of surviving larvae. In addition, longer feeding times resulted in stronger larvicidal activity. In vivo activation of α-amylase activity in the midgut at 24 h was dependent on the concentrations of Oxa 1and 2, while longer exposure times contributed to the stronger inhibition of α-amylase activity. Oxa 1 and 2decreased the in vitro activity of α-amylase in the midgut as significantly as N-bromobutanimide at 5.0 μg/mL. Artificial diets had a more conducive effect on the action of Oxa 1 and 2 than dipped maize leaf. Oxa 1 exhibiteda stronger effect on armyworm larvae than Oxa 2. The experiments described here provide informationon 1,3,4-oxadiazoles as novel insecticides for use in insect pest control.

        Effects of Intermittent Fasting on the Circulating Levels and Circadian Rhythms of Hormones

        Intermittent fasting has become an increasingly popular strategy in losing weight and associated reduction in obesity-related medicalcomplications. Overwhelming studies support metabolic improvements from intermittent fasting in blood glucose levels, cardiac andbrain function, and other health benefits, in addition to weight loss. However, concerns have also been raised on side effects including muscle loss, ketosis, and electrolyte imbalance. Of particular concern, the effect of intermittent fasting on hormonal circadianrhythms has received little attention. Given the known importance of circadian hormonal changes to normal physiology, potentialdetrimental effects by dysregulation of hormonal changes deserve careful discussions. In this review, we describe the changes in circadian rhythms of hormones caused by intermittent fasting. We covered major hormones commonly pathophysiologically involvedin clinical endocrinology, including insulin, thyroid hormones, and glucocorticoids. Given that intermittent fasting could alter boththe level and frequency of hormone secretion, decisions on practicing intermittent fasting should take more considerations on potential detrimental consequences versus beneficial effects pertaining to individual health conditions.

        Thermal behavior, microstructure, phase transformation, and crystal growth kinetics of nano-scale Fe3+-doped TiO2 xerogel powders

        Titania based ceramics are promising materials for environmental sensors, high efficiency photocatalyst. Ion doping is an effective method to improve the properties by modifying their microstructure and phase composition. In this study, TiO2 particles doped with Fe3+ were prepared by sol-gel method using Ferric nitrate and tetrabutyl titanate as precursors. Fe3+ was incorporated in the TiO2 matrix during thermal treatment in different temperatures. Thermal analysis, TEM and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the TiO2 powder. Microstructure, phase content, and cell parameters were calculated according to Rietveld refinement software GSAS. The interaction mechanism of Fe3+ in crystal lattice of titanium dioxide and the crystal growth kinetics of Fe3+-doped TiO2 are discussed.

        Relaying Protocols and Delay Analysis for Buffer-aided Wireless Powered Cooperative Communication Networks

        In this paper, we investigate a buffer-aided wireless powered cooperative communication network (WPCCN), in which the source and relay harvest the energy from a dedicated power beacon via wireless energy transfer, then the source transmits the data to the destination through the relay. Both the source and relay are equipped with an energy buffer to store the harvested energy in the energy transfer stage. In addition, the relay is equipped with a data buffer and can temporarily store the received information. Considering the buffer-aided WPCCN, we propose two buffer-aided relaying protocols, which named as the buffer-aided harvest-then-transmit (HtT) protocol and the buffer-aided joint mode selection and power allocation (JMSPA) protocol, respectively. For the buffer-aided HtT protocol, the time-averaged achievable rate is obtained in closed form. For the buffer-aided JMSPA protocol, the optimal adaptive mode selection scheme and power allocation scheme, which jointly maximize the time-averaged throughput of system, are obtained by employing the Lyapunov optimization theory. Furthermore, we drive the theoretical bounds on the time-averaged achievable rate and time-averaged delay, then present the throughput-delay tradeoff achieved by the joint JMSPA protocol. Simulation results validate the throughput performance gain of the proposed buffer-aided relaying protocols and verify the theoretical analysis.

        Serum exosomal miR-192 serves as a potential detective biomarker for early pregnancy screening in sows

        Objective: The study was conducted to screen differentially expressed miRNAs in sows at early pregnancy by high-throughput sequencing and explore its mechanism of action on embryo implantation. Methods: The blood serum of pregnant and non-pregnant Landrace×Yorkshire sows were collected 14 days after artificial insemination, and exosomal miRNAs were purified for high throughput miRNA sequencing. The expression patterns of 10 differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs were validated by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The qRT-PCR quantified the abundance of serum exosomal miR-192 in pregnant and control sows, and the diagnostic power was assessed by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. The target genes of DE miRNAs were predicted with bioinformatics software, and the functional and pathway enrichment analysis was performed on gene ontology and the Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes terms. Furthermore, a luciferase reporter system was used to identify the target relation between miR-192 and integrin alpha 4 (ITGA4), a gene influencing embryo implantation in pigs. Finally, the expression levels of miRNAs and the target gene ITGA4 were analyzed by qRT-PCR, and western blot, with the proliferation of BeWo cells detected by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8). Results: A total of 221 known miRNAs were detected in the libraries of the pregnant and non-pregnant sows, of which 55 were up-regulated and 67 were down-regulated in the pregnant individuals compared with the non-pregnant controls. From these, the expression patterns of 10 DE miRNAs were validated. The qRT-PCR analysis further confirmed a significantly higher expression of miR-192 in the serum exosomes extracted from pregnant sows, when compared to controls. The ROC analysis revealed that miR-192 provided excellent diagnostic accuracy for pregnancy (area under the ROC curve [AUC] = 0.843; p>0.001). The dual-luciferase reporter assay indicated that miR-192 directly targeted ITGA4. The protein expression of ITGA4 was reduced in cells that overexpressed miR-192. Overexpression of miR-192 resulted in the decreased proliferation of BeWo cells and regulated the expression of cell cycle-related genes. Conclusion: Serum exosomal miR-192 could serve as a potential biomarker for early pregnancy in pigs. miR-192 targeted ITGA4 gene directly, and miR-192 can regulate cellular proliferation.
