GAS-COOLED FAST REACTORS_DHR SYSTEMS, PRELIMINARY DESIGN AND THERMAL- HYDRAULIC STUDIES
Malo, J.Y.,Bassi, C.,Cadiou, T.,Blanc, M.,Messie, A.,Tosello, A.,Dumaz, P. Korean Nuclear Society 2006 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.38 No.2
The Gas-cooled Fast Reactor (GFR) is one of the six reactor concepts selected within the framework of the Generation IV initiative and is the reference concept for the Commissariat $\grave{a}$ l'Energie Atomique $(CEA^1)$. Two reactor unit sizes have been considered: 600 MWth and 2400 MWth. As far as thermal-hydraulics is concerned, reactor decay heat removal (DHR) proves to be a major issue. The CEA has conducted exploratory design studies to address this issue and a reference solution for the 600MWth reactor has been recommended.

Duration of work absence has a major impact on health costs related to musculoskeletal injuries. Primary prevention has not proven to be an efficient solution to manage all cases of musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) particularly for low back pain. Secondary prevention by the means of an early return to work is a scientifically supported avenue to reduce the burden of MSD. This presentation describes the integration of ergonomics into the return to work process. The main example is described in the publication “Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders: Guide and Tools for Modified Work”, meant to assist companies in managing return to work. The guide includes a follow-up algorithm, six steps to build a return to work program, worksheets to estimate the physical work demands of return to work tasks and forms to communicate with the treating physician.

South Dakota is an important agricultural state in the United States with annual cash receipts from agricultural products exceeding $9 billion dollars. This production is possible because of large areas of productive soils. This publication describes the general characteristics and qualities of the major soil groups recognized in South Dakota. The soil forming factors are briefly described, soil classification is introduced, and the genesis of typical Udalf and Ustoll soils are discussed. Soil management issues impacting the use of SD soils are considered. Long-term (>70 yrs) cultivation has significantly reduced surface soil organic carbon levels (>30% reduction) when compared to non-cultivated soil. Soil test phosphorus levels significantly increased in cultivated fields due to commercial P fertilization. The major long-term production problems for SD soils are conservation of soil moisture, organic matter and nitrogen losses, fertility management, and wind and water erosion control.

Dichlorvos (DDVP) has been abused in Nigeria for suicide attempts, topical applications to treat an ectoparasitic infestation, and indiscriminate use on farm produce. Exposure to this compound in subacute concentration can cause toxicity in different tissues by alteration of the cellular antioxidative defence mechanism. This analysis is aimed at the systematic profiling of DDVP to assess its cytotoxic and mutagenic potential for human vulnerability using an in silico classification model. DDVP was grouped into categories of analogue chemical compounds generated from inventories based on structural alerts that measure the biological effects on cell lines and animal models using the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model. The cytotoxic and mutagenic potential of DDVP was assessed by analyzing target endpoints like skin sensitization, oral/inhalation toxicity, neurotoxicity and mutagenicity. DDVP shows moderate sensitization potential that can induce skin irritation during prolonged exposure because of the presence of dichlorovenyl side-chain that interacts with cellular proteins and causes degradation. 50% lethal dose (LD50) of DDVP per body weight was determined to be 26.2 mg/kg in a rat model at 95% confidence range for acute oral toxicity, and 14.4 mmol/L was estimated as 50% lethal concentration (LC50) in the atmosphere due to acute inhalation toxicity. DDVP can also inhibit acetylcholinesterase in the nervous system to produce nicotinic and muscarinic symptoms like nausea, vomiting, lacrimation, salivation, bradycardia, and respiratory failure may cause death. The widely used pesticide causes weak DNA methylation which can repress gene transcription on promoter sites. DDVP is volatile so it can cause oral and inhalation toxicity coupled with neurotoxicity during prolonged exposure. Serum cholinesterase blood tests should be encouraged in federal and state hospitals to investigate related health challenges as DDVP is still used in Nigeria.
