        A study on pushover analyses of reinforced concrete columns

        This paper proposes a realistic approach to pushover analyses of reinforced concrete (RC) structures with single column type and frame type. The characteristic of plastic hinge of a single RC column subjected to fixed axial load was determined first according to column’s three distinct failure modes which were often observed in the experiments or earthquakes. By using the determined characteristic of plastic hinge, the pushover analyses of single RC columns were performed and the analytical results were investigated to be significantly consistent with those of cyclic loading tests. Furthermore, a simplified methodology considering the effect of the variation of axial force for each RC column of the frame structure during pushover process is proposed for the first time. It would be helpful in performing pushover analysis for the structures examined in this study with efficiency as well as accuracy.

      • Correlates of Susceptibility to Smoking among Secondary School Students in Kota Tinggi District, Johor, Malaysia

        Background: Smoking among adolescents has been linked to a variety of adverse and long term health consequences. "Susceptibility to smoking" or the lack of cognitive commitment to abstain from smoking is an important predictor of adolescent smoking. In 2008, we conducted a study to determine the psycho-sociological factors associated with susceptibility to smoking among secondary school students in the district of Kota Tinggi, Johor. Materials and Methods: Two thousand seven hundred students were randomly selected by proportional stratified sampling. Analyses on 1,736 non-smoking students revealed that prevalence of adolescents susceptible to smoking was 16.3%. Results: Male gender (aOR=2.05, 95%CI= 1.23-3.39), poor academic achievement (aOR 1.60, 95%CI 1.05-2.44), ever-smoker (aOR 2.17, 95%CI 1.37-3.44) and having a smoking friend (aOR 1.76, 95%CI 1.10-2.83) were associated with susceptibility to smoking, while having the perception that smoking prohibition in school was strictly enforced (aOR 0.55, 95%CI 0.32-0.94), and had never seen friends smoking in a school compound (aOR 0.59, 95%CI 0.37-0.96) were considered protective factors Conclusions: These results indicate that follow-up programmes need to capitalise on the modifiable factors related to susceptibility to smoking by getting all stakeholders to be actively involved to stamp out smoking initiation among adolescents.

      • Prevalence and Factors Associated with Smoking Intentions among Non-smoking and Smoking Adolescents in Kota Tinggi, Johor, Malaysia

        Intention to smoke is a valid and reliable factor for predicting future smoking habits among adolescents. This factor, however, has received inadequate attention in Malaysia. The present paper elaborates the prevalence and factors associated with intent to initiate or to cease smoking, among adolescent nonsmokers and smokers in Kota Tinggi, Johor, Malaysia. A total of 2,300 secondary school students aged 13-16 years were selected through a two-stage stratified sampling method. A set of standardized questionnaires was used to assess the smoking behavior among adolescents and the inter-personal and intra-personal factors associated with smoking intention (intention to initiate smoking or to cease smoking). Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify factors related to smoking intention. The prevalence of intention to smoke in the future or to cease smoking among non-smoking adolescents and current smokers were 10.7% and 61.7% respectively. Having friends who smoke, social influence, and poor knowledge about the ill effects on health due to smoking showed significant relationships with intention to smoke in the future among non-smokers. Conversely, perceived lower prevalence of smoking among peers, weak contributory social influence, and greater awareness of the ill effects of smoking are factors associated with the intention to cease smoking sometime in the future. The study found that prevalence of intention to initiate smoking is low among non-smokers while the majority of current smokers intended to cease smoking in the future. Existing anti-smoking programmes that integrate the factors that have been identified in the current study should be put in motion to reduce the prevalence of intention to initiate smoking and increase the intention to cease smoking among adolescents.

        Striatal Dopamine Transporter Availability is Associated with Sleep Disturbance among Patients with Bipolar I Disorder: A Single-photon Emission Computed Tomography Study Using [99mTc] TRODAT-1

        Objective: Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by the poor sleep quality. Whether the striatal dopamine transporter (DAT) availability is related to sleep quality among patients with BD is unclear. Methods: Fifty-three euthymic patients with BD (24 BD-I and 29 BD-II) and sixty-eight healthy controls were enrolled. The Chinese Version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used, and the availability of DAT was assessed by single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) using [99mTc] TRODAT-1. Results: The sleep disturbance component of the PSQI was significantly associated with the level of DAT availability among patients with BD. Conclusion: The striatal dopaminergic activity that contributes to resilience to adversity was associated with sleep pattern among patients with BD.

        Enhanced Phase Relaxation in a Hybrid Ferromagnet/Semiconductor System

        Hybrid ferromagnet/semiconductor systems have been the focus of considerable attention because of the transport properties of two-dimensional electron systems and their potential applications to magnetic storage and sensing devices. We use the weak localization effect to probe the dephasing mechanism at low temperatures. In our study, the zero-temperature phase-relaxation rate can be enhanced in a hybrid ferromagnet/semiconductor system, which may be due to the inhomogeneous magnetic field emanating from the Ni film. The result may improve understanding of the issue of zero-temperature dephasing in disordered systems.         Probing Insulator-quantum Hall Transitions by Current Heating

        We report a magneto-transport study on the two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in an Al- GaAs/GaAs heterostructure. The direct insulator to quantum Hall conductor transition is observed at low temperatures by increasing the magnetic field B perpendicular to the 2DES. We can also observe the transition by varying the current I and find a relation Te~Ia between electron effective temperature Te and current. Here, a denotes the exponent for the power law. The exponent a, however, can have different values on the two sides of the transition point, which indicates different inelastic scattering mechanisms in the low-field insulator and in the quantum Hall conductor.         Pharmacokinetics of (-)-Epicatechin in Rabbits

        The aim of this study was to investigate the pharmacokinetics of (-)-epicatechin (EC) in rabbits after intravenous, intraperitoneal, and oral administration. A two-compartment model was used to describe the pharmacokinetics of EC after intravenous administration. EC showed dose-independent pharmacokinetics after intravenous administration. In addition, the area under the concentration-time curve was proportional to the dose over the range 5-25 mg/kg. After intraperitoneal administration of 25 mg/kg, a high percentage of EC escaped from first-pass hepatic elimination. After oral administration of 50 mg/ kg, there was a great variation in the pharmacokinetics, and the mean oral bioavailability of EC was 4%. There was no significant difference in the elimination rate constants in all treatments (p>0.05). In conclusion, after intravenous, intraperitoneal, and oral administration of EC, the EC exhibits dose-independent pharmacokinetics in rabbits. The first-pass effect did not participate in the low oral bioavailability. Base on the results of the present study, the other factors may contribute the low oral bioavailability.

        Algorithm/Architecture Co-Exploration of Visual Computing on Emergent Platforms: Overview and Future Prospects

        <P>Concurrently exploring both algorithmic and architectural optimizations is a new design paradigm. This survey paper addresses the latest research and future perspectives on the simultaneous development of video coding, processing, and computing algorithms with emerging platforms that have multiple cores and reconfigurable architecture. As the algorithms in forthcoming visual systems become increasingly complex, many applications must have different profiles with different levels of performance. Hence, with expectations that the visual experience in the future will become continuously better, it is critical that advanced platforms provide higher performance, better flexibility, and lower power consumption. To achieve these goals, algorithm and architecture co-design is significant for characterizing the algorithmic complexity used to optimize targeted architecture. This paper shows that seamless weaving of the development of previously autonomous visual computing algorithms and multicore or reconfigurable architectures will unavoidably become the leading trend in the future of video technology.</P>

        Asian Subgroup Analysis of the REMISSIO Study: A Long-Term Efficacy and Safety Study of Paliperidone Palmitate 3-month Formulation in Patients with Stable Schizophrenia in a Naturalistic Clinical Setting

        Objective: To evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of three-monthly paliperidone palmitate (PP3M) in Asian patients with stable schizophrenia in a naturalistic setting. Methods: Asian patients recruited between May 2016 and March 2018 from the prospective, single-arm, non-randomized, open-label, multi-national REMISSIO study were analyzed. Patients received PP3M over 12 months following ≥ 4 months of treatment with one-monthly paliperidone palmitate. The primary efficacy endpoint was the proportion of patients who achieved symptomatic remission. Other endpoints were changes in Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and Personal and Social Performance (PSP) total scores, hospitalization rates, and safety. Results: A total of 71 patients (23.3%) were Asian (South Korea: 33, Malaysia: 21, Taiwan: 17); 95.8% of patients completed the study. At LOCF, 71% of Asian patients achieved symptomatic remission compared to the overall population (n = 172/303, 56.8%). Improvements in mean (standard deviation) PANSS and PSP total scores from baseline to LOCF in Asian patients and overall population were clinically significant. A lower proportion of Asian patients had ≥ 1 psychiatric hospitalization after PP3M treatment (n = 1/70, 1.4%) than during the 12 months before (n = 12/70, 17.1%); compared with patients in the overall population after (n = 8/303, 2.6%) and before PP3M treatment (n = 37/303, 12.2%). The overall incidence of treatment-emergent adverse events across Asian patients was 62.9% compared to 53.1% in the overall population. Safety findings were consistent with the known safety profile of PP3M. Conclusion: Our findings confirm existing evidence on the efficacy and tolerability of PP3M in Asian patients with stable schizophrenia over 12 months of treatment.
