Abstract

Ageing drivers experience a higher risk of intersection crashes because of their decrease in driving efficiency, including the decline in cognitive ability, head and neck flexibility, and visual acuity. Although several studies have been conducted to examine the factors associated with ageing driver crashes at intersections, little research has been conducted to examine the differences in the factors related to ageing drivers’ turning paths and intersection geometric features. This study aims to improve the safety of ageing drivers at intersections by identifying the maneuvers that are risky for them and tracking their turning movements at selected intersections. We find that ageing drivers experience more crashes at intersections than younger drivers, especially crashes involving turning movements. Furthermore, ageing drivers experience more crashes at unchannelized intersections compared to channelized intersections. In addition, this study finds that ageing drivers exhibit greater and more inconsistent offsets during turning movements compared to those of younger drivers at both channelized and unchannelized intersections. Ageing drivers also tend to make relatively sharper or tighter turns than younger drivers. Hence, transportation engineers and road safety professionals should consider appropriate countermeasures to reduce the risks of crashes involving ageing drivers at intersections.

Highlights

We compared the crashes and turning movements of ageing drivers and younger drivers.

Ageing drivers tend to make relatively sharper or tighter turns.

They exhibit greater offsets during turning movements at both channelized and unchannelized intersections.

They experience more intersection crashes, especially those involving turning movements.

We recommend trialing the new intersection designs proposed by the FHWA (2014).

The standardization urban transit project has been started by government and the Korean standard electrical railcar has been designed. The bodyshell of standard railcar is made of aluminium alloy. In the present paper, the design of its bodyshell is evaluated in the viewpoint of strength analysis. The loading condition is based on the "Test Methods of Static Load for Body Structure of Electrical Multiple Unit", standard specification. The bodyshell of Korean standard EMU consist of longitudinal extrusion members which are double-skin structure type. For the purpose of security and lightening we decided the section of the aluminium carbody through the size optimization in this paper. Hereafter this paper will contribute to the shape optimization.

There are many EMU lines in korea. But only one type has been applied to passenger side door. This type is so called "Pocket sliding type". This type has some week points. To begin with, it is not good for decreasing the noisy form the outside of carbody. And the second time, if some obstacles are put between sliding door, only driver can operate re-open door switch manually in driver"s cab. This type is so dangerous for passengers. So many people want to the new door type that have no defect. KRRI joined forces with ANT corporation for pneumatic plug door system. This type will be good for decreasing the noisy, passenger"s safe. The project was started at the last year on November and will be finished on June, this year In this paper, we will deal with the role of cylinder, planetary gear, door control unit, dynamic mechanism, and the report of FEM, type test. This paper will contribute to the electric motor control plug door system.

The objective of this study was to develop an evaluation model for highway geometric design consistency based on speed prediction model, which was developed utilizing sight distance. The model has the capability of reflecting the effect of driver's available sight distance, which seems one of the most critical factors in determining operating speed, into speed prediction procedures on horizontal alignment. On vertical alignment, the model predicts the operating speed for each type of vehicles according to the specific grades and vehicle acceleration or deceleration rates. The model also can predict the operating speed on the combined alignment of horizontal and vertical curves. The result showed that, on horizontal alignment, the operating speed based on drivers sight distance has been influenced mostly by curve radius. On vertical curves, vertical grades did not influence the passenger car speed, whereas they did to heavy vehicle speed, and it was certainly believed to occur due to different acceleration rates. It was assumed and found later in this study that there would be three different kinds of acceleration or deceleration rates on vertical grades; The first would serve from the entering stage until the heavy vehicles reach their crawl speeds, the second from crawl speed up until the speed dat vicinity of upgrade, and the third on downgrades. To determine the operating speed on combined alignments, in the earlier studies, Watanatada has developed the idea of choosing the lowest speed, among speeds calculated by three different speed prediction methods based on geometric, traffic, and vehicular characteristics. His method, however, was unlikely to account for the effect of combined alignments on vehicle speeds because of too simplified assumptions. This problem was resolved in this research by using the model which was afford to predict the passenger car speed as well as heavy vehicle speeds. A computer program was written using C++ to facilitate the computational procedure thereof. Field surveys were made in the horizontal curve sites, of which curve radius were between 50-800 meters, to collect the speed and acceleration/deceleration rates and validate the speed prediction results, and the results seemed to be in a good agreement. In conclusion, it was believed that the model could produce realistic speed predictions which can be used when one wants to check the highway geometric design consistency. And this can be a vital tool in analyzing the appropriateness of a highway plan and profile drawing map submitted for approval before construction. It was recommended that further studies be made to determine acceleration and deceleration rates according to curve characteristics and desired speeds. Integration of the model with a computerized highway geometric alignment was also suggested.
A Model for Forecasting Annual Trips and Revenues on Expressway

There are various issues affecting the financial revenues of expressways, such as new transportation systems, the opening of new roads, and free toll charges. As a result, expressway toll revenues for 2017 increased only 0.3% from the previous year. If this trend continues, the steady increase in expressway revenue may have occurred, therefore it is necessary to improve the model of annual trips and revenues considering various external variables that are occurring recently. In this study, we constructed annual trips forecasting model that can analyze more precisely the changes of road network by using new independent variables (which are not considered in existing models) such as weighted length considering regional traffic volume level and private road ratio. Also we performed a basic statistical analysis on oil prices and reflected the model as a dummy variable to improve the explanatory power of the model. And we established an analysis process to estimate the toll revenue. The results of this study can be used as the basic data for expressway financial model.
