Stability of Geomembrane Surface Barrier of Earth Dam Considering Strain-softening Characteristic of Geosynthetic Interface

Haimin Wu,Yiming Shu 대한토목학회 2012 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.16 No.7

Geosynthetic interfaces are characterized by strain-softening behaviors that exhibit a reduction in shear stress at relative shear displacements beyond peak strengths. The traditional practice in assessing the stability of geosynthetic barrier systems is based on Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM) which cannot consider the strain-softening behavior of interfaces. The safety factors calculated by LEM may overestimate the stability of geosynthetic barrier systems. A method combining LEM with numerical analysis for evaluating stability of geomembrane surface barrier of earth dam was proposed in this paper. The formula of calculating the factor of safety for geomembrane barrier systems taking account of the effect of interface strain-softening was derived. An example of composite geomembrane lined earth dam was numerically analyzed to verify the developed method. The calculated factor of safety is between the results that calculated from LEM using peak shear strength and residual shear strength. Through comparatively analysis with LEM results, it is suggested to use peak shear strengths along the basal interface and residual shear strength along the side slope interface in evaluating stability of geomembrane surface barrier of earth dam using LEM.

Vol.25 No.2Ⅰ

Vol.27 No.1

The Digital Library is the integrated system of Information Retrieval System(IRS) and Database Management System(DBMS). In the Digital Library environment where dynamic query and update processes are required, however, the existing transaction management methods cause the following problems. First, since the traditional consistency criteria is too restrictive, it causes increment of query processing time and cannot guarantee the reflection of recency. Second, query result could be unreliable because the consistency criteria between source data and metadata is not defined. This paper models the access to metadata based on Dublin Core as query transactions and update transactions, and gives the efficient method to manage them. Particularly, this paper describes the consistency criteria of metadata which takes it into consideration the consistency between the result of query transaction and status of source data in the Digital Library, that is different from the consistency criteria in traditional transaction management. It also presents analysis of the view point of query transaction to reflect recency and proposes metadata management to guarantee recency within metadata consistency.

        『이구아나의 밤』: 신성 회복의 여정

        이해민(Lee, Haimin) 신영어영문학회 2018 신영어영문학 Vol.71 No.-

This article explores the experiences of Shannon, the anti-hero of Tennessee Williams’ The Night of the Iguana, in his journey towards the restoration of a positive image of Divinity. Williams employs Shannon and Hannah to suggest that God has two contradictory images: that of a wrathful God and a benevolent God. Shannon has been frustrated all his life and sees the evidence of a cruel God in the misery of his own life. However, the spiritual Hannah helps Shannon overcome his blind fury at living in a contradictory reality, so that he is finally able to conceive of a benevolent God through her, a woman who sympathizes with and understands him. Shannon regains a positive recognition of Divinity by escaping from his ordeals and redeems his humanity through person-to-person communication with Hannah. Based on these aspects, this article analyzes the play from the perspective of the restoration of Divinity, revealing how Shannon finally overcomes his negative conception of God.

Inhibition of Dll4/Notch1 pathway promotes angiogenesis of Masquelet’s induced membrane in rats

        Qian Tang,Haimin Jin,Minji Tong,Gang Zheng,Zhongjie Xie,Shangkun Tang,Jialei Jin,Ping Shang,Huazi Xu,Liyan Shen,Yu Zhang,Haixiao Liu 생화학분자생물학회 2018 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.50 No.-

The Masquelet’s induced membrane technique for repairing bone defects has been demonstrated to be a promising treatment strategy. Previous studies have shown that the vessel density of induced membrane is decreased in the late stage of membrane formation, which consequently disrupts the bone healing process. However, relatively little is known about certain mechanisms of vessel degeneration in the induced membrane tissue and whether promotion of angiogenesis in induced membranes can improve bone regeneration. Here, we showed that the Delta-like ligand 4/ Notch homolog 1 (Dll4/Notch1) pathway was relatively activated in the late stage of induced membrane, especially at the subcutaneous site. Then, DAPT, a classical γ-secretase inhibitor, was applied to specifically inhibit Notch1 activation, followed by up-regulation of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) and CD31 expression. DAPTmodified induced membranes were further confirmed to contribute to bone regeneration after autogenous bone grafting. Finally, in vitro experiments revealed that knocking down Notch1 contributed to the functional improvement of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) and that DAPT-treated induced membrane tissue was more favorable for angiogenesis of EPCs compared with the vehicle group. In conclusion, the present findings demonstrate that Dll4/ Notch1 signaling is negatively associated with the vessel density of induced membrane. Pharmacological inhibition of Notch1 attenuated the vessel degeneration of induced membrane both in vitro and in vivo, which consequently improved bone formation at the bone defect site and graft resorption at the subcutaneous site.

TEMPORAL CHANGE OF MAGNETIC SHEAR FREE FROM THE 180° AMBIGUITY

MOON Y.-J.,WANG HAIMIN,SPIROCK THOMAS J.,PARK Y. D. The Korean Astronomical Society 2002 Journal of The Korean Astronomical Society Vol.35 No.3

In this paper we present a methodology to derive the temporal change of the magnetic shear angle from a series of vector magnetograms, with a high time cadence. This method looks for the minimum change of the shear angle between a pair of magnetograms, free from the $180^{\circ}$ ambiguity, and then accumulates this change over many successive pairs to derive the temporal change of magnetic shear. This methodology will work well if only the successive magnetograms occurred in an active region are well aligned and its helicity sign is reasonably determined. We have applied this methodology to a set of vector magnetograms of NOAA Active Region 9661 on October 19, 2001 by the new digital magnetograph at the Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO). For this work we considered well aligned magnetograms whose cross-correlation values are larger than 0.95. As a result, we have confirmed the recent report of Wang et al. that there was the abrupt shear change associated with the X1.6 flare. It is also demonstrated that the shear change map can be an useful tool to highlight the local areas that experienced the abrupt shear change. Finally, we suggest that this observation should be a direct support of the emergence of sheared magnetic fields.

      • FORMATION AND ERUPTION OF A SMALL FLUX ROPE IN THE CHROMOSPHERE OBSERVED BY NST,IRIS, ANDSDO

        Kumar, Pankaj,Yurchyshyn, Vasyl,Wang, Haimin,Cho, Kyung-Suk IOP Publishing 2015 The Astrophysical journal Vol.809 No.1

Using high-resolution images from the 1.6 m New Solar Telescope at Big Bear Solar Observatory, we report the direct evidence of chromospheric reconnection at the polarity inversion line between two small opposite polarity sunspots. Small jetlike structures (with velocities of similar to 20-55 km s(-1)) were observed at the reconnection site before the onset of the first M1.0 flare. The slow rise of untwisting jets was followed by the onset of cool plasma inflow (similar to 10 km s(-1)) at the reconnection site, causing the onset of a two-ribbon flare. The reconnection between two sheared J-shaped cool Ha loops causes the formation of a small twisted (S-shaped) flux rope in the chromosphere. In addition, Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager magnetograms show the flux cancellation (both positive and negative) during the first M1.0 flare. The emergence of negative flux and the cancellation of positive flux (with shear flows) continue until the successful eruption of the flux rope. The newly formed chromospheric flux rope becomes unstable and rises slowly with a speed of similar to 108 km s(-1) during a second C8.5 flare that occurred after similar to 3 hr of the first M1.0 flare. The flux rope was destroyed by repeated magnetic reconnection induced by its interaction with the ambient field (fan-spine topology) and looks like an untwisting surge (similar to 170 km s(-1)) in the coronal images recorded by the Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly. These observations suggest the formation of a chromospheric flux rope (by magnetic reconnection associated with flux cancellation) during the first M1.0 flare and its subsequent eruption/disruption during the second C8.5 flare.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CME KINEMATICS AND FLARE STRENGTH

        MOON Y.-J.,CHOE G. S.,WANG HAIMIN,PARK Y. D.,CHENG C. Z. The Korean Astronomical Society 2003 Journal of The Korean Astronomical Society Vol.36 No.2

We have examined the relationship between the speeds of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and the GOES X-ray peak fluxes of associated flares. Noting that previous studies were possibly affected by projection effects and random association effects, we have considered two sets of carefully selected CME-flare events: four homologous events and four well-observed limb events. In the respective samples, good correlations are found between the CME speeds and the GOES X-ray peak fluxes of the associated flares. A similarly good correlation is found for all eight events of both samples when the CME speeds of the homologous events are corrected for projection effect. Our results suggest that a close relationship possibly exists between CME kinematics and flaring processes.
