Applications of fiber optic sensors in civil engineering

        Deng, Lu,Cai, C.S. Techno-Press 2007 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.25 No.5

Recent development of fiber optic sensor technology has provided an excellent choice for civil engineers for performance monitoring of civil infrastructures. Fiber optic sensors have the advantages of small dimensions, good resolution and accuracy, as well as excellent ability to transmit signal at long distances. They are also immune to electromagnetic and radio frequency interference and may incorporate a series of interrogated sensors multiplexed along a single fiber. These advantages make fiber optic sensors a better method than traditional damage detection methods and devices to some extent. This paper provides a review of recent developments in fiber optic sensor technology as well as some applications of fiber optic sensors to the performance monitoring of civil infrastructures such as buildings, bridges, pavements, dams, pipelines, tunnels, piles, etc. Existing problems of fiber optic sensors with their applications to civil structural performance monitoring are also discussed.

Internal Defect Detection of Structures Based on Infrared Thermography and Deep Learning

        Lu Deng,Hui Zuo,Wei Wang,Chao Xiang,Honghu Chu 대한토목학회 2023 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.27 No.3

Rapid and accurate detection of internal defects in bridges has always been a major concern of the management and maintenance departments. In the present study, an intelligent method for the detection of structural internal defects is proposed based on infrared thermography and deep learning. Through theoretical analysis, numerical simulations and laboratory experiments, the classification, localization and quantification of internal defects of concrete structures were achieved with the infrared thermography and deep learning method. The mean average precision for classification and localization of internal defects is 96.59%, the mIoU for pixel-level segmentation is 95.19%, and the average relative error for damage quantification is 0.70%. The feasibility of the trained model is verified with new images, and the results show that the trained model can capture infrared thermal features of internal defects with different sizes and depths. This method has the advantages of low cost, high accuracy, easy operation, and large area scanning of concrete structures, which can provide a good reference for the detection of internal defects of concrete structures.

Room temperature ferromagnetism in Ni-doped ZnO films

        Deng-Lu Hou,Rui-Bin Zhao,Yan-Yan Wei,Cong-Mian Zhen,Cheng-Fu Pan,Gui-De Tang 한국물리학회 2010 Current Applied Physics Vol.10 No.1

Zn1-xNixO (x = 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05, 0.07) films were prepared using magnetron sputtering. X-ray diffraction indicates that all samples have a wurtzite structure with c-axis orientation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results reveal that the Ni ion is in a +2 charge state in these films. Magnetization measurements indicate that all samples have room temperature ferromagnetism. In order to elucidate the origin of the ferromagnetism, Zn0.97Ni0.03O films were grown under different atmospheric ratios of argon to oxygen. The results show that as the fraction of oxygen in the atmosphere decreases, both the saturation magnetization and the number of oxygen vacancies increase, confirming that the ferromagnetism is correlated with the oxygen vacancy level.

      • Disambiguate Chinese Word Sense Based on Linguistics Knowledge

        Chun-Xiang Zhang,Long Deng,Xue-Yao Gao,Zhi-Mao Lu 보안공학연구지원센터 2014 International Journal of Database Theory and Appli Vol.7 No.6

Word sense disambiguation (WSD) is important to many application problems in natural language processing fields, such as machine translation, parsing analysis and information retrieval. In this paper, we propose a new method to determine correct sense categories of Chinese words based on linguistics knowledge. The left word string and the right word string around the ambiguous word are respectively analyzed. Their syntactic structures are obtained for determining its intended sense. Syntactic category and part of speech are extracted as disambiguation features. A naive bayesian model is used as the classifier. Experimental results showed that the accuracy rate of classification arrives at 64%. The performance of disambiguation is improved.

      • Phase II Trial of Loubo® (Lobaplatin) and Pemetrexed for Patients with Metastatic Breast Cancer not Responding to Anthracycline or Taxanes

Deng, Qian-Qian,Huang, Xin-En,Ye, Li-Hong,Lu, Yan-Yan,Liang, Yong,Xiang, Jin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.1

Purpose: This phase II study was undertaken to determine the efficacy and safety of Loubo$^{(R)}$ (Lobaplatin) in combination with pemetrexed in treating patients with metastatic breast cancer who failed to respond to anthracycline or taxanes. Patients and Methods: Metastatic breast cancer cases who had previously received an anthracycline and a taxane in either adjuvant or metastatic settings, were enrolled. All patients were recruited from Jiangsu Cancer Hospital and Research Institute, and were treated with Loubo$^{(R)}$ (Lobaplatin) 35 $mg/m^2$ (intravenous; on day 1) and pemetrexed 500 $mg/m^2$ (intravenous; on day 1) every 21 days. Efficacy and side effects were evaluated after at least two cycles of chemotherapy. Results: All eligible 19 patients completed at least 2 cycles of chemotherapy with pemetrexed and lobaplatin, and were evaluable. Overall, 3 (15.8%) patients achieved partial response, 11 (57.9%) stable disease, 5 (26.3%) progression of disease, with no complete remission. Response rate was 15.8%, disease control rate was 42.1%. The median survival time was 10.3 months. Neutrophil suppression occurred in 36.8% of patients who had grade 2 toxicity, and 26.3% had grade 3, 26.4% had grade 4. Thrombocytopenia was encountered as follows: 21.1% grade 2, 15.8% grade 3 and 5.5% grade 4. Incidences of anemia were 10.5% in grade 2, 5.3% grade 3 and 0% grade 4. Only 5.3% of patients required packed red blood cell transfusion. Grade 3 digestive tract toxicity occurred in 5.5% of patients. Other toxicities included elevated transaminase, oral mucositis and skin rashes. Conclusions: The regimen of lobaplatin and pemetrexed is modestly active in metastatic breast cancer patients who failed anthracycline or taxanes, and the toxicity profile suggesting that the doses of chemotherapy should be further modified.

      • Effect of dielectric barrier discharge parameters on degradation efficiency of ethyl acetate

        Deng, Xu,Lu, SiHeng,Zheng, Kun,Yu, ZhiMin Urban Science Institute 2019 도시과학 Vol.8 No.2

Using self-made coil dielectric barrier discharge reactor, the removal efficiency of ethyl acetate under simulated experimental parameters such as initial concentration of waste gas, total flow rate, relative humidity and voltage was investigated. The results show that the degradation rate of ethyl acetate increases with the increase of output voltage. When other conditions remain unchanged, the degradation rate decreases with the increase of initial concentration of ethyl acetate; with the increase of total flow rate, the degradation rate of ethyl acetate decreases; with the increase of relative humidity, the degradation rate first increases and then decreases, and when the relative humidity is 64%, the degradation efficiency is the highest.

      • Role of IL-18 Gene Promoter Polymorphisms, Serum IL-18 Levels, and Risk of Hepatitis B Virus-related Liver Disease in the Guangxi Zhuang Population: a Retrospective Case-Control Study

        Lu, Yu,Bao, Jin-Gui,Deng, Yan,Rong, Cheng-Zhi,Liu, Yan-Qiong,Huang, Xiu-Li,Song, Liu-Ying,Li, Shan,Qin, Xue Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.14

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between IL-18 gene polymorphisms and HBV-related diseases and whether these polymorphisms influence its expression in the Guangxi Zhuang population. Materials and Methods: We enrolled 129 chronic HBV infected (CHB) patients, 86 HBV-related liver cirrhosis (LC) patients and 160 healthy controls in our study. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism methods were used to detect IL-18 gene -607C/A, -137G/C polymorphisms, and an ELISA kit was employed to determine serum IL-18 levels. Results: No correlation was found between the -607C/A polymorphism and risk of HBV-related disease. For the -137G/C polymorphism, the GC genotype and C allele were associated with a significantly lower risk of CHB (95%CI: 0.32-0.95, p=0.034 and 95%CI: 0.35-0.91, p=0.018) and HBV-related LC (95%CI: 0.24-0.89, p=0.022 and 95%CI: 0.28-0.90, p=0.021). A similar decreased risk was also found with the A-607C-137 haplotype. With respect to IL-18 expression, it was significantly lower in both patient groups, but no association was noted between the two polymorphisms in the IL-18 gene and its expression. Conclusions: Our study indicated that the -137C allele in the IL-18 gene may be a protective factor for HBV-related disease, and serum IL-18 level may be inversely associated with CHB and HBV-related LC.

Plant Virome Analysis by the Deep Sequencing of Small RNAs of Fritillaria thunbergii var. chekiangensis and the Rapid Identification of Viruses

        Lu-xi Chen,Hang-kai Pan,Yu-tian Tao,Dang Yang,Hui-min Deng,Kai-jie Xu,Wen-bin Chen,Jun-min Li 한국식물병리학회 2022 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.38 No.5

Thunberg fritillary (Fritillaria thunbergii), a perennial used in traditional Chinese herbal medicine, is a members of the family Liliaceae. The degeneration of germplasm is a severe problem in the production of Fritillaria thunbergii var. chekiangensis. However, no information about viral infections of F. thunbergii var. chekiangensis has been reported. In this study, we sequenced the small RNAs of F. thunbergii var. chekiangensis from leaves and bulbs, and viruses were identified using a phylogenetic analysis and BLAST search for sequence. In addition, multiplex reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to rapidly detect viruses in this variety. Our study first reported that five viruses infected F. thunbergii var. chekiangensis. Among them, fritillary virus Y (FVY), lily mottle virus (LMoV), Thunberg fritillary mosaic virus (TFMV), and hop yellow virus (HYV) had been reported in F. thunbergii, while apple stem grooving virus was first reported in the genus Fritillaria. A multiplex RT-PCR method was developed to rapidly test the four viruses FVY, LMoV, TFMV, and HYV in F. thunbergii var. chekiangensis. Our results provide a better understanding of the infection of F. thunbergii var. chekiangensis by viruses and a basic reference for the better design of suitable control measures.

      • Lack of Association Between CYP1A1 Polymorphisms and Risk of Bladder Cancer: a Meta-analysis

        Lu, Yu,Zhang, Xiao-Lian,Xie, Li,Li, Tai-Jie,He, Yu,Peng, Qi-Liu,Deng, Yan,Wang, Jian,Qin, Xue,Li, Shan Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.9

Background: The effects of CYP1A1 gene polymorphisms on the risk of bladder cancer (BC) remain controversial. We carried out a meta-analysis to clarify the role of CYP1A1 gene polymorphisms in BC. Material and Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted up to November 20, 2013. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to estimate the strength of the association. Meta-regression, subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis and publication bias were also performed. Results: Eight studies involving 1,059 BC cases and 1,061 controls were included. The meta-analysis showed that there was no significant association between the two common mutations of CYP1A1 and BC risk. For the I1e462Val A/G polymorphism with GG vs. AA the OR was 1.47 (95 % CI= 0.70-3.07, P =0.308). For the MspI T/C polymorphism, though a slight trend was found this was not statistically nonsignificant (CC vs.TT, OR = 1.24, 95 % CI= 0.98-1.58, P =0.078). Subgroup analyses by ethnicity also found no obvious association between CYP1A1 and BC risk. Conclusion: The present meta-analysis suggests that CYP1A1 polymorphism is not associated with bladder cancer risk.
