What Information Should Counselor Education Program Websites Include for Prospective Doctoral Students?

        Cynthia Mulit,Hongryun Woo,Claire Martin,Yuima Mizutani 한국상담학회 2023 Journal of Asia Pacific counseling Vol.13 No.2

The Covid-19 pandemic has placed major strains on the mental health of individuals and families throughout the world (Castaño Díaz et al., 2022). Becoming a counselor with a master’s degree has become one of the most sought-after jobs in the U.S. after the COVID-19 pandemic (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2023). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers in mental health fields such as substance abuse, behavioral health, and mental health, will increase by 21% between 2021 and 2031, which is three times faster than average for all other careers (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2023). In turn, the rapid growth of interest in mental health fields has led many individuals to pursue an even higher degree through a doctoral program in counseling education (CE). However, very often, many CE program websites are not user-friendly and are in fact confusing for prospective students to follow, to ensure a successful doctoral application process. In contrast, a user-friendly and informative counseling program website provides prospective students with comprehensive information about the counseling field, the university’s counseling department, and counseling degrees offered, including admission standards and requirements for degree completion. User-friendly and informative program websites also help prospective and current students evaluate what they truly desire in the program and successfully navigate the application process. The authors illustrate the importance of well-organized CE program websites with two hypothetical cases of prospective students searching for information. Additionally, the authors provide recommendations regarding the content and organization needed for user-friendly and comprehensive counselor education program websites.

      • Evaluation of a commercial feed additive (Alquernant Inmuplus®) on growth performance and survival in tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, and in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss

Cynthia Lisette Jo Rivero,Junior Llontop Torres,Juan Battaglia Aljaro,Sungchul C. Bai 한국수산과학회 양식분과 2021 한국수산과학회 양식분과 학술대회 Vol.2021 No.4

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of a natural feed additive (Alquernat Inmuplus®, AI) on growth performance in fry tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, and in fry rainbow trout, Orcorhynchus mykiss. Nine group of twenty-five tilapia (0.22±0.03) were randomly distributed into three treatment in triplicates rearing by the laboratory recirculation system, and six groups of four thousand rainbow trout (1.08±0.02) were randomly distributed into three treatments in duplicate rearing by the farm raceway in Peru. This commercial AI is known to contain equal amount of two plant extracts of Coneflower, Echinacea purpurea, and Dandelion, Taraxacum officinale. Fish were fed with three experimental diets consisting of 0 (CON), 2 (T2) and 4 (T4) ml of AI / kg of commercial diets. After 8 weeks of feeding trial, average of weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) of tilapia fed T2 and T4 diets were significantly higher than those fish fed with CON diet (p<0.05). Feed conversion ratio (FCR) of tilapia fed T4 diet significantly better than those fish fed with CON diet, however, there were no significant differences among the fish fed T2 and CON diets. In addition, there were no significant differences in survival rate of tilapia fed the all experimental diets (p>0.05). After 90 days of feeding trial, average survival rates of trout feed T2 and T4 diets were significantly higher than those fish fed CON diet (p<0.05). Average FCR of trout fed CON diet were significantly better than those fish fed T4, however, there were no significant differences among the fish fed CON and T2 diets. Also, there were no significant differences in WG and SGR of fish fed all the diets. Therefore, these results indicated that Alquernant Inmuplus® could be beneficial as growth promoter in tilapia and as survival enhancer in rainbow trout, but more studies in the practical farm conditions would be needed.

REVIEW : Role of Ghrelin in the Pathophysiology of Gastrointestinal Disease

( Cynthia K Cheung ),( Justin Che Yuen Wu ) The Editorial Office of Gut and Liver 2013 Gut and Liver Vol.7 No.5

Ghrelin is a 28-amino-acid peptide that plays multiple roles in humans and other mammals. The functions of ghrelin in-clude food intake regulation, gastrointestinal (GI) motility, and acid secretion by the GI tract. Many GI disorders involving infection, inflammation, and malignancy are also correlated with altered ghrelin production and secretion. Although sup-pressed ghrelin responses have already been observed in various GI disorders, such as chronic gastritis, Helicobacter pylori infection, irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspep-sia, and cachexia, elevated ghrelin responses have also been reported in celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease. Moreover, we recently reported that decreased fasting and postprandial ghrelin levels were observed in female patients with functional dyspepsia compared with healthy subjects. These alterations of ghrelin responses were significantly cor-related with meal-related symptoms (bloating and early satia-tion) in female functional dyspepsia patients. We therefore support the notion that abnormal ghrelin responses may play important roles in various GI disorders. Furthermore, human clinical trials and animal studies involving the administra-tion of ghrelin or its receptor agonists have shown promising improvements in gastroparesis, anorexia, and cancer. This review summarizes the impact of ghrelin, its family of pep-tides, and its receptors on GI diseases and proposes ghrelin modulation as a potential therapy. (Gut Liver 2013;7:505-512)

Changes in metabolic parameters and adverse kidney and cardiovascular events during glomerulonephritis and renal vasculitis treatment in patients with and without diabetes mellitus

( Cynthia C. Lim ),( Jason C. J. Choo ),( Hui Zhuan Tan ),( Irene Y. J. Mok ),( Yok Mooi Chin ),( Choong Meng Chan ),( Keng Thye Woo ) 대한신장학회 2021 Kidney Research and Clinical Practice Vol.40 No.2

Background: Cardiovascular disease causes significant morbidity and mortality in patients with glomerulonephritis, which is increasingly diagnosed in older individuals who may have diabetes mellitus (DM). We evaluated the impact of DM on metabolic profile, renal and cardiovascular outcomes during treatment and follow-up of individuals with glomerulonephritis. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 601 consecutive adults with biopsy-proven glomerulonephritis for factors associated with kidney failure, hospitalization for cardiovascular events, and death. Biopsies with isolated diabetic nephropathy were excluded. Results: The median patient age was 49.8 years (36.7-60.9 years) with estimated glomerular filtration rate of 56.7 mL/min/1.73㎡ (27.7-93.2 mL/min/1.73㎡). DM was present in 25.4%. The most frequent diagnoses were minimal change disease (MCD) or focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) (29.5%), lupus nephritis (21.3%), immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy (19.1%), and membranous nephropathy (12.1%). The median follow-up was 38.8 months (interquartile range [IQR], 26.8-55.8 months). Among 511 individuals with lupus nephritis, anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis, MCD/FSGS, membranous nephropathy, and IgA nephropathy, 52 (10.2%) developed kidney failure at a median 16.4 months (IQR, 2.3-32.2 months), while 29 (5.7%) had cardiovascular-related hospitalizations at 12.9 months (IQR, 4.8-31.8 months) and 31 (6.1%) died at 13.5 months (IQR, 2.5-42.9 months) after diagnosis. Cox regression analysis found that baseline DM was independently associated with kidney failure (adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 2.07; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.06-4.05, p = 0.03) and cardiovascular-related hospitalization (adjusted HR, 2.69; 95% CI, 1.21-5.98, p = 0.02) but not with mortality. Conclusion: DM was strongly associated with kidney failure and hospitalization for cardiovascular events in patients with biopsy-proven glomerulonephritis.

Something to Write about: Movies as Materials for Beginning Academic Writing

Cynthia Daugherty 영상영어교육학회 2005 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.6 No.2

This paper starts with the contention that ESL textbooks for academic writing do not offer adequate instruction on paragraph development. Rather they focus more on paragraph types. As a result, for many students, English academic writing is a style that emphasizes form more than substance. While no one would argue that form is important, it is of little value unless it is used to communicate original content. To unite the two, students need to combine knowledge of form with engaging material to write about. The material must easy enough to understand, but also complex enough to allow for choices, both about the topic of and the information that should be used in the paragraph. The paper presents the idea of using movies as material for practicing the academic writing skills of summarizing and supporting a topic sentence with explanation and examples.

Oral Vancomycin Therapy in a Child with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis and Severe Ulcerative Colitis

        Cynthia Buness,Keith D. Lindor,Tamir Miloh 대한소아소화기영양학회 2016 Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition Vol.19 No.3

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a rare progressive liver disease characterized by cholestasis and bile duct fibrosis, has no accepted, effective therapy known to delay or arrest its progression. We report a 15 year old female patient diagnosed with PSC and moderate chronic active ulcerative colitis (UC) who achieved normalization of her liver enzymes and bile ducts, and resolution of her UC symptoms with colonic mucosal healing, after treatment with a single drug therapy of the antibiotic oral vancomycin. We postulate that the oral vancomycin may be acting both as an antibiotic by altering the intestinal microbiome and as an immunomodulator. Oral vancomycin may be a promis-ing treatment for PSC that needs to be further studied in randomized trials.

Profaning the Vision: Re-evaluating Images in Plato’s Philosophy through His Use of Mystery Language

        Cynthia Liu 한국서양고전학회 2021 西洋古典學硏究 Vol.60 No.3

Given the ambiguous position of images in Plato’s dialogues, the question arises: why does Plato use such vivid sense imagery, placing emphasis especially on sight, light, and music, when he describes the vision of the Forms? To answer this question, I suggest that an improved understanding of the analogy that Plato draws between the rites of ancient mystery cults and his own philosophical system can rehabilitate the place of images, especially sensible phenomena, in Plato’s philosophy and additionally offer a way by which readers can approach the dialogues themselves as written objects. I will explore in particular the process of Plato’s philosophical system in relation to the Eleusinian Mysteries, whose framework and imagery Plato utilizes to describe the progression from sense-perception (aisthesis) through recollection (anamnesis) and dialectic to the noetic vision of the Forms. I will show that a refined approach to the relationship between the telea and epopteia of Eleusis sheds new light on the role played by sensible images in philosophical memory and that this relationship informs how we might understand the dialogues themselves. First, I offer a re-structuring of the ‘steps’ of philosophic learning that maps onto a revised reconstruction of Eleusinian mystery rites. Based on this new framework, I argue that the place of sense perception in Plato’s philosophy can be better established by understanding the process of philosophic learning, like mystery rites, as repetitive. Finally, I will extend the mystery analogy to Plato’s dialogues as written logoi to illuminate a way in which readers can approach the texts as images of a way of life.
