Immediate Effects of Side Lying Manual Lumbar Traction in Patients with Painful Active Lumbar Motion

Doug Creighton, Alexa Schweiger, Sarah Cubr,Doug Creighton, Alexa Schweiger, Sarah Cubr 국제물리치료학회 2017 Journal of International Academy of Physical Ther Vol.8 No.1

The purpose of this study was to determine if a gentle form of manual lumbar traction could reduce painful lumbar motions associated with lumbar disc degeneration (LDD). This clinical trial incorporated 134 participants with painful active lumbar motion. Participants were randomly assigned to an experimental treatment or sham group. 67 participants received sidelying manual lumbar traction while the other 67 participants received a sham treatment. Pre and post treatment NPRS values for the painful active lumbar motion were recorded for each group. There was a statistically significant improvement (P=0.00) for decreased pain intensity during active lumbar motion in the experimental group as compared to the sham treatment group. The average percent decrease in numeric pain rating scale (NPRS) values was 52.1% for the experimental treatment group and 8.1% for the sham group. The results of the study suggest that side-lying manual lumbar traction can improve painful lumbar motion in patients with LDD.

The effect of prepositioned upper cervical traction mobilization and therapeutic exercise on cervicogenic headache: A case study

Creighton D,Gammons T,Monahan J,Rochester, MI 국제물리치료연구학회 2018 Journal of International Academy of Physical Ther Vol.9 No.3

The International Headache Society (IHS) has validated cervicogenic headache (CGH) as a secondary headache type that is hypothesized to originate due to nociception in the cervical area. CGH is a common form of headache and accounts for 15% to 20% of all chronic and recurrent headaches. CGH is commonly treated with manual and exercise therapy. To date, no studies have isolated only one manual intervention in an attempt to determine its effectiveness. In this case study we present a 28-year-old patient with right upper cervical (UC) and occipital pain who responded well to a single manual intervention technique. This technique was applied in isolation for the first three visits and two therapeutic exercises prescribed on the fourth and fifth visit. In total, manual and exercise intervention occurred over 8 visits at which point in time the patient was discharged with no UC motion impairments, an NPRS rating of 0, a NDI and HDI demonstrating a 100% improvement and a 37% improvement in FOTO score. The traction based manual intervention and two therapeutic exercises prescribed for this patient were successful in relieving UC pain and CGH. At six months follow up, the patient was still symptom free.

Sustainability supplier scorecard assessment tools: A comparison between apparel retailers

Creighton Rachel,Jestratijevic Iva,Lee Daton 한국마케팅과학회 2022 Journal of Global Fashion Marketing Vol.13 No.1

The purpose of this qualitative study is to evaluate and compare eight sustainability supplier scorecard assessment tools in use among five major international apparel retailers, Walmart, Eileen Fisher, Nike, H&M, and Gap. Inductive content analysis was used to study the raw textual data and make evidence-based inferences. Results showed that the field of sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) is subject to inefficiencies because there are inadequate standards for reporting information which would expose these inefficiencies. The investigated tools varied in terms of scope, performance measurements, and scoring methodologies, which had negative effects on their comparability. This obstacle, however, does not invalidate the major findings, which revealed an evident and concerning lack of information to support the practical application of the tools investigated. Because no retailer disclosed information about its lower tier suppliers’ assessments, it is uncertain whether and how suppliers in lower tiers are engaged in sustainability assessments. Because sustainability violations occur at a higher rate within fragmented supply chains, it is critical to communicate supplier engagement throughout the value chain. The findings of this study urge the application of standardized and comprehensive scorecard assessments which would help to enhance the credibility of SSCM practice, its assessment, and its communication.

Vol.33 No.1

This study examined the relationship between the ambivalence of children and parents towards each other and the influence of the children’s dependence and ambivalence on the parents’ psychological well-being based on a sample of Korean parents and children living in Korea and Canada. Self-reported on-line and off-line survey data from 322 Korean parents and adult children living in Korea and off-line survey data from 60 Korean parents and adult children living in Canada were used for this study. The collected data were analyzed using the PASW 18.0 program and regression analyses were performed. The results showed that adult children living in Canada reported higher economic dependence and lower instrumental and emotional dependence on their parents than adult children living in Korea. Parents living in Canada reported higher psychological well-being than parents living in Korea. The children’s instrumental dependence and the ambivalence of parents towards their children influenced the ambivalence of adult children in Korea. The economic dependence of adult children living in Canada had a significant effect on their ambivalence towards their parents. The children’s emotional dependence and ambivalence towards their parents influenced the parents’ ambivalence in Korea. The children’s economic dependence and parents’ ambivalence towards their children had negative effects on the psychological well-being of parents living in Canada. The Korean parents’ psychological well-being was negatively influenced by their ambivalence towards their children. These results were discussed in terms of parent-child relationships in different cultures.

A functional annotation of subproteomes in human plasma

        Ping, Peipei,Vondriska, Thomas M.,Creighton, Chad J.,Gandhi, TKB,Yang, Ziping,Menon, Rajasree,Kwon, Min-Seok,Cho, Sang Yun,Drwal, Garry,Kellmann, Markus,Peri, Suraj,Suresh, Shubha,Gronborg, Mads,Molin WILEY-VCH 2005 PROTEOMICS -WEINHEIM- Vol.5 No.13

The data collected by Human Proteome Organization's Plasma Proteome Pilot project phase was analyzed by members of our working group. Accordingly, a functional annotation of the human plasma proteome was carried out. Here, we report the findings of our analyses. First, bioinformatic analyses were undertaken to determine the likely sources of plasma proteins and to develop a protein interaction network of proteins identified in this project. Second, annotation of these proteins was performed in the context of functional subproteomes involved in the coagulation pathway, the mononuclear phagocytic system, the inflammation pathway, the cardiovascular system, and the liver; as well as the subset of proteins associated with DNA binding activities. Our analyses contributed to the Plasma Proteome Database (http://www.plasmaproteomedatabase.org), an annotated database of plasma proteins identified by HPPP as well as from other published studies. In addition, we address several methodological considerations including the selective enrichment of post-translationally modified proteins by the use of multi-lectin chromatography as well as the use of peptidomic techniques to characterize the low molecular weight proteins in plasma. Furthermore, we have performed additional analyses of peptide identification data to annotate cleavage of signal peptides, sites of intra-membrane proteolysis and post-translational modifications. The HPPP-organized, multi-laboratory effort, as described herein, resulted in much synergy and was essential to the success of this project.

Economic and environmental effects of precursor variation in a continuous carbon fibre manufacturing process

Thomas Groetsch,Maxime Maghe,Claudia Creighton,Russell J. Varley 한국공업화학회 2023 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.127 No.-

Commercial carbon fibre manufacture is a proprietary process which has resulted in limited informationbeing publicly available in regard to the processing of different materials and their impact on material, environmental and economic characteristics. This study investigates the relationship between differentprecursor materials and these parameters through an in-depth analysis of process structures, materialproperties, incurred emissions, energy demand and cost composition. This study compares three importantprecursor types for carbon fibre manufacture including ecological and economical aspects. Two ofthe precursors are polyacrylonitrile based, a special carbon fibre and textile grade, while the third is a sustainablyderived lignin-cellulose blend. The lower cost textile precursor has significantly higher processingcost than the specialized material while also incurring a higher amount of emissions. Indeed, up to270% more compared to the special grade precursor. The analysis of the lignin-cellulose blend precursorillustrates its shortcomings, especially with respect to processability and properties, despite its lowerenvironmental impact and up to 25% cost advantage. This study suggests pathways for the industrial processingof alternative precursors outlining their economic and ecological benefits and highlighting areasof necessary improvement such as material properties and energy demand.
