Structural Changes and Employment Growth in Sub-Saharan Africa: Does Demographic Structure Matter?

        Abidemi C. Adegboye,Nosakhare L. Arodoye 중앙대학교 경제연구소 2023 Journal of Economic Development Vol.48 No.2

This study examines the effects of structural changes on employment growth in the sub-Saharan African (SSA) region using demographic structure as an intermediary factor. Data used covers 37 SSA countries for the period 2000 to 2018 and the Generalised Method of Moments (GMM) and decomposition techniques are employed to show the indirect and direct relationships respectively. Economic structure in the region is found to mainly promote total employment with services sector having a larger capacity for absorbing labour, especially in low-productivity activities. There is also evidence that demographic changes in SSA region, while acting as a strong base for drawing employment, has led to significant losses in productive employment yields. Countries with large labour force tend to produce highly vulnerable and less productive employment, especially for the youths. Demographic changes, rather than economic structure, have more long run implications for employment in the SSA region.

Antinociceptive and Anti-Inflammatory Activities of Telfairia occidentalis Hydroethanolic Leaf Extract (Cucurbitaceae)

Abidemi James Akindele,Joy Awulika Oladimeji-Salami,Blessing Amarachi Usuwah 한국식품영양과학회 2015 Journal of medicinal food Vol.18 No.10

Telfairia occidentalis (Cucurbitaceae) is a tropical vine grown in West Africa as a leaf vegetable and for its edible seeds. The plant is noted to have healing properties. It is used as a blood tonic to revive weak/ill individuals and its use by sickle cell patients has been documented. In this study, the antinociceptive activity of the hydroethanolic leaf extract of Telfairia occidentalis (TO) was evaluated using the acetic acid-induced writhing, formalin, tail clip, and hot plate tests in mice. The carrageenan- and egg albumin-induced rat paw edema tests were used to evaluate the anti-inflammatory action. The extract (50–400 mg/kg, p.o.) produced significant (P < .05) dose-dependent inhibition of pain response elicited by acetic acid and formalin while also increasing the nociceptive reaction latency in the tail clip and hot plate tests. In respect of antiinflammatory activity, the extract elicited significant (P < .05) time and dose-dependent inhibition of edema development in the carrageenan and egg albumin tests. Peak effects of TO in the models were generally comparable with the effects of the standard drugs (acetylsalicylic acid, morphine, indomethacin, and chlorpheniramine) used. Phytochemical screening of the extract revealed the presence of tannins, saponins, phlobatannins, and anthraquinones. The extract did not produce any mortality and visible signs of delayed toxicity when administered orally up to 2000 mg/kg. The LD50 (i.p.) was estimated to be 4073.80 mg/kg. The results obtained in this study suggest that TO possesses antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities possibly mediated through peripheral and central mechanisms involving inhibition of release and/or actions of vasoactive substances and prostaglandins.

Effects of Telfairia occidentalis (Fluted Pumpkin; Cucurbitaceae) in Mouse Models of Convulsion, Muscle Relaxation, and Depression

        Abidemi J. Akindele,Mutiu Y. Ajao,Flora R. Aigbe,Uchenna S. Enumah 한국식품영양과학회 2013 Journal of medicinal food Vol.16 No.9

Telfairia occidentalis (Cucurbitaceae) is a leafy vegetable used in soup and folk medicine in southern Nigeria. Ethnobotanical survey revealed that preparations of the plant are used in the treatment of central nervous system-related disorders including convulsion. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the hydroethanolic leaf extract of T. occidentalis in mouse models of convulsion, muscle relaxation, and depression. The strychnine and isoniazid convulsion, traction and climbing muscle relaxation, and forced swim and tail suspension depression tests were used in this study. The extract was administered orally (p.o.) at dose range of 25–800 mg/kg while distilled water (10 mL/kg p.o.) served as negative control. Diazepam (5 mg/kg p.o.) was used as positive control in the convulsion and muscle relaxation models while imipramine (64 mg/kg p.o.) served the same purpose in the depression tests. T. occidentalis significantly increased the onset (P < .001) and reduced the duration of convulsion (P < .05, .01) in the strychnine test and increased the time to death (P < .05,.01, .001) in the isoniazid model. The extract insignificantly increased the reaction time in the traction test while it significantly increased the time in the climbing test (P < .001). In the forced swim and tail suspension models, T. occidentalis significantly (P < .001) and dose-dependently increased the duration of immobility. The results obtained in this study suggest that the hydroethanolic leaf extract of T. occidentalis possesses anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant properties, thus justifying its folkloric use.

An Existentialist Reconciliation of African (Yoruba) Cultural Canons and Sustainable Development Goals

Abidemi Olufemi Adebayo 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2020 OMNES: The Journal of Multicultural Society Vol.10 No.2

The paper examines how the African (Yoruba) cultural canons and belief system are in collision with the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. The collision has been born out of the non-lineal temporal divergence in the emergence of the Yoruba cultural beliefs and the conception of the Sustainable Development Goals. The inconsistencies have been explored through an existentialist lens as the theoretical guide for this paper. This is because existentialism exalts the individual will in an irrational world. Among the Yoruba, there are beliefs and practices that offend individual Goals of the SDGs. For example, the current s’ogbedi’gboro (urbanization for modernization) philosophy needs be discarded as it offends Goal 13-Climate Actions as a result of inordinate deforestation. In the same vein, the okobeerel’oyegomina (the governor deserves a large fleet of cars as convoy) philosophy and the ololajulo needs be jettisoned as itwidens economic inequality in Africa. This is pertinent because it is in contravention of SDGs Goal 10-Reduced Inequalities. The Yoruba attitude to female children, judicial philosophy, subservient disposition to the West, and the aboriginal knowledge system are not in consonance with the spirit of the overall principles of the SDGs. To this end, the Yoruba (African) native belief system as well as cultural practices need be modified in order that the essence of the SDGs will be accomplished in the Yoruba region and in the entirety of Africa.

Yoruba African Women and Patriarchal Excesses in the Context of Globalization and Sustainable Development Goals

Adebayo, Abidemi Olufemi 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2021 Asian Women Vol.37 No.3

This paper investigates how cultural practices as they relate to men’s treatment of women in the Yoruba culture align with or contradict globalization ideals and the principles of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), given that globalization and the SDGs are conceived as yardsticks for global development in the twenty-first century. Globalization and the SDGs are two contemporary phenomena with universal applicability and impact because they impart African culture, particularly gender, patriarchy, and femininity as cultural signifiers. This paper is anchored on Molara Ogundipe-Leslie’s gender theory of Stiwanism which advocates women’s social inclusion, and George Herbert Mead’s Interactionism which centers on inclusivity. Nigeria is yet to implement the SDGs goals due to insecurity and, this paper argues, cultural variance. The existing Yoruba customs seen in native assumptions, aboriginal wisdom or knowledge systems, and superstitions, as well as social practices regarding women, threaten gender unification as conceived of in SDG 5. The Yoruba cultural belief that women cannot be family icons threatens SDG 10. The new practice of Yoruba men using women for money-making rituals is an objectification of women, contradicting gender best practices as enshrined in Goal 5. The continued practice of levirate marriage among the Yoruba because the widow cannot inherit a late husband’s property, arising from the economic disempowerment of the women concerned, undermines SDG 8, relating to decent work and economic growth. Existing Yoruba attitudes toward women are therefore inimical to global best practices in relation to women and the successful implementation of the SDGs in Southwest Nigeria by 2030. This calls for further investigation into the cultures of Nigeria’s other regions to assess the feasibility of the SDGs initiative in these parts of the country.

      • Augmentation of antioxidant system: Contribution to antimalarial activity of Clerodendrum violaceum leaf extract

Elizabeth Abidemi Balogun,Ahmed Hauwa Zailani,Joseph Oluwatope Adebayo 셀메드 세포교정의약학회 2014 TANG Vol.4 No.4

Reactive oxygen species are known to mediate various pathological conditions associated with malaria. In this study, the antioxidant potential of Clerodendrum violaceum leaf extracts, an indigenous antimalarial remedy, was evaluated. Total phenol, flavonoid, selenium, vitamins C and E contents of Clerodendrum violaceum leaf extracts were determined. The free radical scavenging activities of the extracts against DPPH, superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide coupled with their reducing power were also evaluated in vitro . Moreover, responses of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione reductase (GR) in a rodent malaria model to a 4-day administration of Clerodendrum violaceum leaf extracts were also evaluated. The methanolic extract was found to contain the highest amounts of antioxidant compounds/element and also demonstrated the highest free radical scavenging activity in vitro . The results showed a significant decrease ( p < 0.05) in SOD and CAT activities with a concurrent significant ( p < 0.05) increase in GPx and GR activities in both erythrocytes and liver of untreated Plasmodium berghei NK65-infected animals compared to the uninfected animals. The extracts were able to significantly increase ( p < 0.05) SOD and CAT activities and significantly reduce ( p < 0.05) GPx and GR activities in both the liver and erythrocytes compared to those observed in the untreated infected animals. The results suggest the augmentation of the antioxidant system as one of the possible mechanisms by which Clerodendrum violaceum extract ameliorates secondary effects of malaria infection, alongside its antiplasmodial effect in subjects.

      • 콘크리트의 소성수축균열 완화를 위한 섬유의 거동에 관한 고찰

Folorunsho Abidemi Bashiru,김승원,박철우 한국도로학회 2024 한국도로학회 학술대회 발표논문 초록집 Vol.2024 No.03

The purpose of this study is to review the available literature on the effectiveness of fibers in preventing early-age shrinkage cracking on cementitious concrete. The overview describes the widely used ASTM C1579 (Standard Test Method for Evaluating Plastic Shrinkage Cracking of Restrained Fiber Reinforced Concrete (Using a Steel Form Insert) for plastic shrinkage cracking. The past literature used crack length, width, or area to describe and quantify cracks on concrete specimens. To keep things simple, this review expresses the length, width or area as a percentage of the control specimen. Finally, the study establishes a relationship between fiber volume and aspect ratio on plastic shrinkage and compressive strength of concrete. It was concluded that fiber is sufficient enough to mitigate plastic shrinkage cracking. An increase in fiber volume and aspect ratio reduces the early-age cracking of concrete but harm its compressive strength.
