An Existentialist Reconciliation of African (Yoruba) Cultural Canons and Sustainable Development Goals

Abidemi Olufemi Adebayo 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2020 OMNES: The Journal of Multicultural Society Vol.10 No.2

The paper examines how the African (Yoruba) cultural canons and belief system are in collision with the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. The collision has been born out of the non-lineal temporal divergence in the emergence of the Yoruba cultural beliefs and the conception of the Sustainable Development Goals. The inconsistencies have been explored through an existentialist lens as the theoretical guide for this paper. This is because existentialism exalts the individual will in an irrational world. Among the Yoruba, there are beliefs and practices that offend individual Goals of the SDGs. For example, the current s’ogbedi’gboro (urbanization for modernization) philosophy needs be discarded as it offends Goal 13-Climate Actions as a result of inordinate deforestation. In the same vein, the okobeerel’oyegomina (the governor deserves a large fleet of cars as convoy) philosophy and the ololajulo needs be jettisoned as itwidens economic inequality in Africa. This is pertinent because it is in contravention of SDGs Goal 10-Reduced Inequalities. The Yoruba attitude to female children, judicial philosophy, subservient disposition to the West, and the aboriginal knowledge system are not in consonance with the spirit of the overall principles of the SDGs. To this end, the Yoruba (African) native belief system as well as cultural practices need be modified in order that the essence of the SDGs will be accomplished in the Yoruba region and in the entirety of Africa.

Yoruba African Women and Patriarchal Excesses in the Context of Globalization and Sustainable Development Goals

Adebayo, Abidemi Olufemi 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2021 Asian Women Vol.37 No.3

This paper investigates how cultural practices as they relate to men’s treatment of women in the Yoruba culture align with or contradict globalization ideals and the principles of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), given that globalization and the SDGs are conceived as yardsticks for global development in the twenty-first century. Globalization and the SDGs are two contemporary phenomena with universal applicability and impact because they impart African culture, particularly gender, patriarchy, and femininity as cultural signifiers. This paper is anchored on Molara Ogundipe-Leslie’s gender theory of Stiwanism which advocates women’s social inclusion, and George Herbert Mead’s Interactionism which centers on inclusivity. Nigeria is yet to implement the SDGs goals due to insecurity and, this paper argues, cultural variance. The existing Yoruba customs seen in native assumptions, aboriginal wisdom or knowledge systems, and superstitions, as well as social practices regarding women, threaten gender unification as conceived of in SDG 5. The Yoruba cultural belief that women cannot be family icons threatens SDG 10. The new practice of Yoruba men using women for money-making rituals is an objectification of women, contradicting gender best practices as enshrined in Goal 5. The continued practice of levirate marriage among the Yoruba because the widow cannot inherit a late husband’s property, arising from the economic disempowerment of the women concerned, undermines SDG 8, relating to decent work and economic growth. Existing Yoruba attitudes toward women are therefore inimical to global best practices in relation to women and the successful implementation of the SDGs in Southwest Nigeria by 2030. This calls for further investigation into the cultures of Nigeria’s other regions to assess the feasibility of the SDGs initiative in these parts of the country.

Effects of polyphenols of Cocos nucifera husk fibre on selected indices of cardiovascular diseases in mice

        Joseph Oluwatope Adebayo,Olumuyiwa Sunday Adewumi,Simbiat Titilayo Baruwa,Elizabeth Abidemi Balogun,Sylvia Orume Malomo,Lawrence Aderemi Olatunji,Ayodele Olufemi Soladoye 셀메드 세포교정의약학회 2016 셀메드 (CellMed) Vol.6 No.2

Cocos nucifera (C. nucifera) oil is indigenously used to treat cardiovascular diseases. However, coconut husk fibre (which is rich in polyphenols) has not been screened for this property. Based on the ethnomedicinal use of polyphenols in treating cardiovascular diseases, this study was carried out to evaluate the effects of polyphenols of C. nucifera husk fibre on selected cardiovascular disease indices in mice. Fifty adult male Swiss albino mice were assigned randomly into five groups (A-E). Mice in groups B, C, D and E were administered 31.25, 62.5, 125, and 250 mg/kg body weight polyphenols of ethyl acetate extract of C. nucifera husk fibre respectively while the control group (A) mice received 5% DMSO for seven days. The mice were sacrificed twenty four hours after the last administration of polyphenols. Heart and plasma lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities and plasma lipid profile were determined. Results revealed significant reduction (*p < 0.05) in plasma levels of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol with no significant change (*p > 0.05) in HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride and VLDL levels in the plasma at all doses of polyphenols administered compared to controls. There was significant reduction (*p < 0.05) in the activities of heart AST and LDH while plasma ALT, AST, and ALP activities were not significantly altered (*p > 0.05) at all doses of polyphenols administered compared to controls. These results suggest that the polyphenols of C. nucifera husk fibre possess cardio-protective properties and also indicate their possible use in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
