The Impact of Trade Openness on Economic Growth: Evidence from Agricultural Countries
Abi Pratiwa SIREGAR,Nadila Puspa Arum WIDJANARKO 한국유통과학회 2022 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.9 No.3
The study investigates the effect of trade openness on the economic growth of agricultural countries. The information of export, import, gross domestic product (GDP), Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF), and population of 72 agrarian nations generated by the World Bank from 2011 until 2020 is used for data examination. Then, before panel data analysis, a preferred model is chosen from among commoneffects, fixed-effects, and random effects. The best model turns out to be a fixed-effect model. The result reports that from 2011 to 2020; 16 out of 72 nations have succeeded in experiencing positive economic growth, the value of GFCF was US$ 2,859.04 billion, and later grew by 19 percent to US$ 3,393.73 billion, the population tends to increase continuously year by year, and 2 out of 72 countries experienced export plus import exceed their GDP. Moreover, trade openness is positively associated with economic growth, with a coefficient of 3.81. Besides that, an increase in GFCF may boost economic growth by approximately 3.32 percent. On the contrary, one percent additional population significantly delivers around 25.46 percent negative economic growth. To sum up, the higher intensity of products or services sold and bought abroad may enhance the economic performance.
An Enhanced Architecture of CMOS Phase Frequency Detector to Increase the Detection Range
Aby Thomas,Dr. P. T. Vanathi 대한전자공학회 2014 Journal of semiconductor technology and science Vol.14 No.2
The phase frequency detector (PFD) is one of the most important building blocks of a phase locked Loop (PLL). Due to blind-zone problem, the detection range of the PFD is low. The blind zone of a PFD directly depends upon the reset time of the PFD and the pre-charge time of the internal nodes of the PFD. Taking these two parameters into consideration, a PFD is designed to achieve a small blind zone closer to the limit imposed by process-voltage-temperature variations. In this paper an enhanced architecture is proposed for dynamic logic PFD to minimize the blind-zone problem. The techniques used are inverter sizing, transistor reordering and use of pre-charge transistors. The PFD is implemented in 180 nm technology with supply voltage of 1.8 V.
Informational Needs of Women with Breast Cancer Treated with Chemotherapy
Abi Nader, Elie,Kourie, Hampig Raphael,Ghosn, Marwan,El Karak, Fadi,Kattan, Joseph,Chahine, Georges,Nasr, Fadi Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.4
Background: Research in the field of informational needs of breast cancer patients is scarce. In the few published articles, these needs were usually not satisfied. The main objective of this study was to evaluate satisfaction regarding informational needs in women with breast cancer. The long-term goal was to guide physician-patient communication to meet these needs. Materials and Methods: A survey with 21 questions was completed by 84 female patients receiving chemotherapy in a one-day hospital in Beirut, Lebanon. All patients were aware of their disease and agreed to participate in the survey. Results: The doctor was the major source of information for patients followed by media (radio and television). The level of knowledge of patients concerning their disease was proportional to the number of information sources. Women aged younger than 45 years, diagnosed during the last three months before the survey and certified from high school were less satisfied with information given by the oncologist. The missing information was in relation with the steps of the treatment after the chemotherapy regimen, the risk of a family member (sisters and daughters) of developing the disease and management of lymphedema. Conclusions: This study generated a scale for the degree of satisfaction of information received by women with breast cancer from their oncologist. The physician can use this scale to improve his or her skills of communication to patients and diminish their level of fear and anxiety.
Infrared controlled waxes for liquid handling and storage on a CD-microfluidic platform
Abi-Samra, Kameel,Hanson, Ryan,Madou, Marc,Gorkin III, Robert A. Royal Society of Chemistry 2011 Lab on a chip Vol.11 No.4

A novel active valving technique, whereby paraffin wax plugs in microchannels on a centrifugal microfluidic platform are actuated using focused infrared (IR) radiation is demonstrated in this report. Microchannels were simultaneously or sequentially opened using a stationary IR source by forming wax plugs with similar or differing melting points. The presented wax plugs offer key advantages over current active valving techniques, including a less involved fabrication procedure, a simpler actuation process, and the ability to multiplex experiment with active valves. In addition, a new technique for automated liquid reagent storage and release on the microfluidic disc platform, based on the formation and removal of a wax layer, is demonstrated. Overall, the techniques presented in this report offer novel methods for liquid handling, separation, and storage on the centrifugal microfluidic disc platform.

Graphic Abstract

Novel fluid handling and storage techniques for the centrifugal microfluidic disc platform based on non-contact actuation of paraffin wax plugs via infrared radiation.

Delamination occurred due to poor manufacturing process or in-service actions significantly affects the mechanical and failure behavior of laminated composite structures. In this study, the buckling and post-buckling delamination behavior of laminated composite with an embedded initial delamination under in-plane compression was studied experimentally and numerically. First, compression tests for laminated composite specimens with embeded initial delamination were performed and the buckling and delamination responses were obtained. Then the experimental test was numerically simulated using finite element methods with the progressive failure accounted for by using cohesive zone modeling. The load-displacement curve, strain behavior and delamination shapes of experimental specimens obtained from load cells, strain gages installed at different locations, and C scan images, respectively, were compared with the FEM results, and good agreements were attained. The effect of the buckling modes, laminate stacking sequence and shape of initial delamination on the buckling load and propagation behavior was studied by considering different ply stacking and shapes of initial delaminations. It was found that the buckling mode determined the growth direction of the delamination propagation, and the stacking sequence influenced the extent of the propagation area, while the orientation of the delamination affected the buckling loads.
