Differences in Gastroprotective and Mutagenic Actions Between Polar and Apolar Extracts of Ananas ananassoides

        J.S. Silva,M.A. Andreo,F.R. Tubaldini,E.A. Varanda,L.R.M. Rocha,A.R.M.S. Brito,W. Vilegas,C.A. Hiruma-Lima 한국식품영양과학회 2008 Journal of medicinal food Vol.11 No.1

Several plants are used in folk medicine to treat gastrointestinal disorders. Ananas ananassoides(Baker) L.B.Smith (Family Bromeliaceae) is a medicinal plant commonly used in the central region of Brazil against gastric pain. Weevaluated two extracts (methanol [MeOH] and dichloromethane [DCM]) obtained from the leaves of A. ananassoidesfor theirability to protect the gastric mucosa against injuries caused by necrotizing agents (0.3 M HCl/60% ethanol, absolute ethanol,non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and pylorus ligation) in mice and rats. The best results were obtained after pretreat-ment with the DCM extract, whereas the MeOH extract did not show any significant anti-ulcerogenic activity but presentedmutagenic action. The mechanism of action of the DCM extract suggested the effective participation of endogenous sulfhydrylgroup in the gastroprotective action. The data, taken together with the absence of acute toxicity and mutagenicity, indicatethe apolar extract, instead of the polar, extract of A. ananassoides as a safe and potential new anti-ulcerogenic drug.

Beijing urban particulate matter-induced injury and inflammation in human lung epithelial cells and the protective effects of fucosterol from <i>Sargassum binderi</i> (Sonder ex J. Agardh)

        Fernando, I.P. Shanura,Jayawardena, Thilina U.,Kim, Hyun-Soo,Lee, Won Woo,Vaas, A.P.J.P.,De Silva, H.I.C.,Abayaweera, G.S.,Nanayakkara, C.M.,Abeytunga, D.T.U.,Lee, Dae-Sung,Jeon, You-Jin Academic Press 2019 Environmental research Vol.172 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Particulate matter (PM) air pollution has gradually become a widespread problem in East Asia. PM may cause unfamiliar inflammatory responses, oxidative stress, and pulmonary tissue damage, and a comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms is required in order to develop effective anti-inflammatory agents. In this study, fine dust collected from Beijing, China (CPM) (size < PM13 with majority < PM2.5) was evaluated for its oxidative stress- and inflammation-inducing effects, which cause cell damage, in A459 human lung epithelial cells. Oxidative stress was marked by an increase in intracellular ROS levels and the production of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1). Upon induction of oxidative stress, a marked increase was observed in the expression of key inflammatory mediators such as COX-2 and PGE2 and the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-6 via NF-kB and MAPK pathways. Cellular damage was marked by a reduction in viability, increased lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, formation of apoptotic and necrotic bodies, accumulation of sub-G1 phase cells, and DNA damage. Apoptosis was found to be mediated via the activation of caspases through the mitochondria-mediated pathway. Fucosterol, purified from the brown alga <I>Sargassum binderi</I> (Sonder ex J. Agardh) by bio-assay-guided fractionation and purification, exhibited potential therapeutic effects against CPM-induced detrimental effects. Further studies could focus on developing fucosterol, in forms such as steroidal inhalers, against PM-induced pulmonary tissue inflammation.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Fine dust air pollution is a major reason of pulmonary complications in East Asia. </LI> <LI> Dust particles induce oxidative stress and inflammation damaging the lung epithelial cells. </LI> <LI> Fucosterol suppressed the dust induced cell damage by inhibiting oxidative stress and inflammation. </LI> <LI> Fucosterol may have beneficial effects in alleviating adverse respiratory effects of air pollution. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Plastic analysis of steel arches and framed structures with various cross sections

        Jéssica L.Silva,Lidiane R.R.M. Deus,Ígor J.M. Lemes,Ricardo A.M. Silveira 국제구조공학회 2021 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.38 No.3

This paper presents a displacement-based numerical methodology following the Euler-Bernoulli theory to simulate the 2 nonlinear behavior of steel structures. It is worth emphasizing the adoption of co-rotational finite element formulations considering large displacements and rotations and an inelastic material behavior. The numerical procedures proposed considers plasticity concentrated at the finite elements nodes, and the simulation of the steel nonlinear behavior is approached via the Strain Compatibility Method (SCM), where the material constitutive relation is used explicitly. The SCM is also applied in determining the sections bearing capacity. Moreover, the present numerical approach is not limited to a specific structural member cross-sectional typology, with the residual stress models introduced explicitly in subareas of steel cross-sections generated by a 2D discretization. Finally, results consistent with the literature and with low processing time are presented.

Graphene as interface modifier in ITO and ITO-Cr electrodes

        Leticia A. Silva,Jéssica M.M. Luzardo,Sanair M. Oliveira,Rafael V. Curti,Alexander M. Silva,Rogerio Valaski,Rodrigo B. Capaz,Joyce R. Araujo 한국물리학회 2020 Current Applied Physics Vol.20 No.7

We explore graphene as interface modifier for electrodes in optoelectronic organic devices by measuring the electrical properties of ITO/graphene and ITO/Cr/graphene. For this purpose, exfoliated graphene (EG) was electrochemically synthesized and deposited by spray-pyrolysis. The built-in voltage (Vbi) values were 450 mV for the ITO/CuPc/Al reference, 750 mV for ITO/Cr/graphene/CuPc/Al and 1000 mV for ITO/graphene/CuPc/Al device structures. From these results, we estimate the work functions as 3.20 eV, 3.45 eV and 4.75 eV for ITO/ EG, ITO/Cr/EG and ITO. To understand how the work function changes, we carried out first-principles calculations based on density-functional theory (DFT) where Cr work function (~4.2 eV) is not modified by the deposition of pristine graphene; however there is a substantial increase (from 4.2 eV to 5.2 eV), upon deposition of graphene oxide (GO), resulting from a complete transfer of O atoms from the GO sheet to the Cr surface forming a thin layer of chromium oxide.

Physicochemical and histopathological parameters of broilers with dorsal cranial myopathy

        Pavanello Ana Clara Longhi,Mendonça Fernanda Jéssica,Oliveira Thalita Evani Silva,Torezan Guilherme Baú,Di Santis Giovana Wingeter,Soares Adriana Lourenço 아세아·태평양축산학회 2023 Animal Bioscience Vol.36 No.6

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effect of dorsal cranial myopathy (DCM) on chicken meat quality. Methods: Sixty-six Ross 308 AP broilers, 47 days old, of both sexes, weighing about 3.51 kg, were slaughtered according to standard industrial practices, and evaluated for meat color, pH, chemical composition, collagen content, fatty acid profile, and histopathological parameters. Comparisons between normal and DCM-affected meat were performed using Student's t-test at the 5% significance level. Results: Histological analysis of muscle tissues affected by DCM showed myofiber degeneration, proliferation of inflammatory cells, fibroplasia, and necrosis with fibrosis. DCM samples had lower protein content and higher moisture, ash, insoluble collagen, total collagen, and pH. DCM-affected meat was redder and more yellowish. There were no differences in lipid or soluble collagen contents between groups. DCM-affected meat had higher percentages of arachidonic acid (C20:4n−6) and eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5n−3). Conclusion: This study revealed that DCM-affected meat exhibits considerable changes in quality parameters.

Ferroelectric switching behavior of pulsed laser deposited Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 thin films

        José P.B. Silva,Koppole C. Sekhar,Sofia A.S. Rodrigues,Anatoli Khodorov,Javier Martín-Sanchez,Mário Pereira,Maria J.M. Gomes 한국물리학회 2012 Current Applied Physics Vol.12 No.4

The effect of pulse amplitude on the ferroelectric and switching properties of pulsed laser deposited Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 thin films has been studied. The structural and morphological analysis revealed that the films had a well crystallized perovskite phase and grain size of about 30e40 nm. A well saturated PeE hysteresis loop was observed with a remnant polarization (Pr)z4.8 mC/cm2 and a coercive fieldz100 kV/cm at a frequency of 1 kHz. The Pr has been found to be decreased only 4.3% after passing 8.0 × 108 cycles. The analysis of switching response with nucleation limited switching model reveals that characteristic switching time (t0) variance is due to the random distribution of the local electric fields. The peak value of polarization current and t0 exhibits exponential dependence on reciprocal of pulse amplitude. Design methodology in transverse webs of the torsional box structure in an ultra large container ship

        Silva-Campillo Arturo,Suárez-Bermejo J.C.,Herreros-Sierra M.A.,de Vicente M. 대한조선학회 2021 International Journal of Naval Architecture and Oc Vol.13 No.1

Container ships has a transverse section in the form of an open profile, making it very sensitive to torsion phenomena. To minimize this effect, a structure known as a torsion box exists, which is subject to high stresses influenced by the fatigue phenomenon and the existence of cut-outs, for the passage of the longitudinal stiffeners, acting as stress concentrators. The aim of this study is to propose a two-stage design methodology to aid designers in satisfying the structural requirements and contribute with to a better understanding of the considered structure. The transverse webs of a torsional box structure are examined by comparing different cut-out geometries from numerical models with different regular load conditions to obtain the variables of the fatigue safety factor through linear regression models. The most appropriate geometry of the torsion box is established in terms of minimum weight, from nonlinear multivariable optimization models.

Electronic structure and optical properties of BaMoO4 powders

        J.C. Sczancoski,L.S. Cavalcante,N.L. Marana,R.O. da Silva,R.L. Tranquilin,M.R. Joya,P.S. Pizani,J.A. Varela,J.R. Sambrano,M. Siu Li,E. Longo,J. Andrés 한국물리학회 2010 Current Applied Physics Vol.10 No.2

Barium molybdate (BaMoO4) powders were synthesized by the co-precipitation method and processed in microwave-hydrothermal at 140 ℃ for different times. These powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) absorption spectroscopies and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD patterns and FT-Raman spectra showed that these powders present a scheelite-type tetragonal structure without the presence of deleterious phases. FT-IR spectra exhibited a large absorption band situated at around 850.4 cm1, which is associated to the Mo–O antisymmetric stretching vibrations into the [MoO4] clusters. UV–vis absorption spectra indicated a reduction in the intermediary energy levels within band gap with the processing time evolution. First-principles quantum mechanical calculations based on the density functional theory were employed in order to understand the electronic structure (band structure and density of states) of this material. The powders when excited with different wavelengths (350 nm and 488 nm) presented variations. This phenomenon was explained through a model based in the presence of intermediary energy levels (deep and shallow holes) within the band gap.
