Eucalyptus gall wasp, Leptocybe invasa is one of the most important invasive pests of Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae) and has been reported in new cultivation areas worldwide. This pest causes severe damage to susceptible plants of the genus Eucalyptus, where it induces galls in the midribs and petioles of young leaves and the internodes of branch and apices. In this work, we evaluated the response of Eucalyptus clones (E. urophylla (Urophylla) and two clone hybrids, one of the E. urophylla × E. camaldulensis (Urocam) and other of E. urophylla × E. grandis (Urograndis) crossings.) submitted to L. invasa collected from areas where L. invasa was recently reported. Our results show that the eucalypt materials cultivated in the areas where L. invasa were reported sensitive to L. invasa attacks. However, the wasp causes fewer galls in the Urocam clone. Thus, the Urocam clone can be preferred for use to reduce population growth of L. invasa in Brazilian savannah areas.

Several plants are used in folk medicine to treat gastrointestinal disorders. Ananas ananassoides(Baker) L.B.Smith (Family Bromeliaceae) is a medicinal plant commonly used in the central region of Brazil against gastric pain. Weevaluated two extracts (methanol [MeOH] and dichloromethane [DCM]) obtained from the leaves of A. ananassoidesfor theirability to protect the gastric mucosa against injuries caused by necrotizing agents (0.3 M HCl/60% ethanol, absolute ethanol,non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and pylorus ligation) in mice and rats. The best results were obtained after pretreat-ment with the DCM extract, whereas the MeOH extract did not show any significant anti-ulcerogenic activity but presentedmutagenic action. The mechanism of action of the DCM extract suggested the effective participation of endogenous sulfhydrylgroup in the gastroprotective action. The data, taken together with the absence of acute toxicity and mutagenicity, indicatethe apolar extract, instead of the polar, extract of A. ananassoides as a safe and potential new anti-ulcerogenic drug.

In this work, solidification and T6-heat treatment experiments were performed with the Al7Si0.3Mg alloy in order to investigatethe effect of processes parameters on the microstructure and microhardness (HV). A directional solidification devicewas used, and the solidification thermal parameters investigated were the growth and cooling rates (VL and TR). The heattreatment applied was the T6 (T6-HT), under the following conditions: solution treatment for 3 h at 520 ± 2 °C, followed byquenching in warm water (70 ± 20 °C), aging for 1, 2, 3 and 4 h at 155 ± 2 °C and air-cooling. The microstructure observedin both as-cast and T6-heat treated samples is composed of a primary phase consisting of an Al-rich dendritic network andsecondary eutectic phases, located within the interdendritic regions, formed by Si and Mg2Siparticles and Fe-intermetallicphases. The dendritic microstructure was characterized by secondary dendritic spacing (λ2) and, for both investigated samples,a single mathematical expression was proposed on the λ2 dependence with the position in the ingot. Spheroidized-likeeutectic Si particles have been found in both analyzed samples for finer microstructures. Elements quantitative and qualitativemicroanalysis by SEM/EDS as well as HV measurement at the dendritic and interdendritic regions attest to the effectivenessof the T6-heat treatment. It is highlighted in this work that mathematical expressions have been proposed to characterizethe HV dependence on aging time.
