인종 리터러시로 읽은 「에밀리를 위한 장미」 : 침묵 당한 흑인

본 연구는 인종 리터러시의 관점으로 포크너의 단편 소설 ｢에밀리를위한 장미｣를 읽음으로써 하인 토우브의 의미를 논하고자 한다. 마을주민들의 집단의식으로 화자인 ‘우리’는 귀족 그리어슨 가문의 마지막 후손으로 불행한 삶을 산 에밀리에 대한 기억을 모아 가십처럼 이야기를 구성하고, 독자들은 추리해 이 이야기의 순서를 맞추어야 한다. 토우브는 주인공에게 영향을 미치는 중요한 인물로 평생 그녀를 충실하게 돌보지만, 토우브가 직접 말을 하는 경우는 없고 이는 화자가 그에게 말을 하도록 허락하지 않기 때문이다. 표면적으로 제퍼슨에는 어떤 억압도 없는 것처럼 보인다. 그러나 실제로는 블랙 코드가 시행되고 있으므로, 흑인 차별이 대단히 심각하다. 즉 화자는 토우브를 포함한 모든 흑인들을 도구나 일하는 동물로 보는 것으로 다른 문화권의 독자들, 특히 인종차별에 익숙하지 않은 한국 독자들이 해설자의 관점을 취한다면, 본문 속의 타자들을 무시하게 될 것이다. 이 연구는 독자들이 사회적 맥락의 관점을 채택할 필요가 있다고 주장한다. This s tudy e xplores the significance o f the black servant T obe i n Faulk ner’s short novel “ A Rose f or E mily” by r eading i t through the perspective of racial literacy. As ‘we’, the narrators and collective consciousness of villagers, compose this horrible story like a gossip by gathering their memories about Emily, who lived an unhappy life, readers should deduce the order of the story. Tobe is an important figure affecting Emily and takes care of her faithfully throughout her life but he does not say a word as the narrators don’t allow him. On the surface, there seems to be no oppression in Jefferson. However, Black Codes are being enforced, so black discrimination is very serious. In short, the speakers see all black people, including Tobe, as tools or working animals. If readers of different cultures, especially Korean readers unfamiliar with racism, adopt the narrator’s view, would not notice the oppressions in the text. This study argues that readers need to take a social context perspective.

Cloud 기반 M&S 지원 환경의 설계

M&S는 모델링부터 분석에 이르는 일련의 과정을 수행하여 주어진 시스템에 대한 의사결정을 지원하는 기술이다. 이 기술을 지원하기 위해 시뮬레이션 통합 환경, 웹 기반 시뮬레이션 지원 환경, 그리고 Cloud 기반 시뮬레이션 지원 환경 등의 연구들이 있어왔으나, 사용자가 시스템 환경을 구축하고 실행에 필요한 자원을 갖추어야만 그 기능을 지원받을 수 있고, 서버에서 자원을 동적으로 할당하여 사용할 수 없으며, IoT Sensor 등의 정보를 입력받을 수 없다는 문제점이 존재한다. 이 문제점을 해결하기 위해 본 논문에서는 기존 Cloud 기반 환경에서 IoT 정보, 핸드폰 센서 정보 등을 시뮬레이션에 사용할 수 있는 Cloud Service 기반 M&S 지원 환경 의 구조를 제안한다. M&S is technology to support making decision for being given system by performing series of process from moideling to analyzing. For supporting this technology, some studies about ‘simulation-integrated-environment’, ‘web-based simulation support environment’, and ‘cloud-based simulation support environment’ have been processed, but there are some problems, first, users should deploy specific system environment and have resources for implement simulations then user can be supported functionally, second, users can’t use server’s resources dynamically, lastly, users can’t put IoT sensor’s information or smartphone sensor’s information in cloud server. To solve these problems, this research suggests the cloud-based architecture of the M&S support environment which uses IoT sensor’s information and smartphone sensor’s information for simulation.

번역 교실에서 사용된 동료피드백의 효과 : 크리티컬 리터러시를 중심으로

This study explores the effect of the peer feedback used in an English-Korean translation class of the liberal arts course. The translation is a problem-solving process related to various areas generated between two languages. So the peer feedback in the translation class allows students to help each other with suggestions for solving the problem. Under the circumstances of COVID-19, this translation class had an unexpected communication effect, and this study argues that it is the result of critical literacy. The peer commenters learned themselves in various ways to provide comments to translators. They read and compared ST and TT, found errors, mobilized their knowledge to analyze the cause of the error, corrected, supplemented, and provided edited versions. Meanwhile, the translators also gave feedback on the commenters translation, so both sides applied critical literacy by exchanging their opinions. The exchanged feedback, and communication, contributed to improving students translation, and the last translation advanced considerably in terms of achievement.

고맥락에서 저맥락으로: 두 권의 『채식주의자』

본 논문은 2016년 맨 부커 국제 문학상을 수상한 데보라 스미스의 The Vegetarian이 가독성과 수용성 위주로 번역했다고 전제하고, 번역가가 문화적 차이를 가로지르기 위해 취한 전략을 분석한다. 내용면을 살펴보면, 원본의 인물들은 고맥락 사회라는 사회적 특성상 집단과 관계를 중시하는 행위규범에 따르지만, 번역본의 인물들은 저맥락 사회의 특징인 개인 중시 사고에 따라 각자의 성격에 따라 행동한다. 영혜는 무난한 여인에서 수동적인 여인으로, 남편은 정황을 활용하는 인물에서 삶을 의도적으로 이끌어가는 인물로 변한다. 동일한 인물을 다른 문화적 관점에서 봄에 따라 중요한 지점이 달라지는 것이다. 형식면에서는 특히 문화적 암시 사항이 있는 문장을 번역가 자신의 시각으로 변형하거나 삭제해서 대상문화의 독자가 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 했다. 또한 한국어문체를 영어다운 문체로 변화시켰다. 그 결과 이 번역은 원본이라고 여겨질 정도로 독자들에게 잘 읽힌다. 이 자국화 번역 전략은 문화적 특이성보다는 내용을 중시하고 원본의 언어와 어휘에는 전혀 관심이 없는 독자들을 대상으로 한 것이다. 따라서 이 번역본은 한국을 배경으로 쓰인 영문학, 또 다른 『채식주의자』이다. This paper analyzes the strategies taken by Smith, the translator of The Vegetarian, to cross cultural differences, assuming she translated it with emphasis on readability and acceptability. One of her strategies is to change the focus to read characters` characteristics. In the source text, the original characters follow the norms of behavior that emphasize group and relationship based on the social characteristics of high-context society, but the same characters in the target text act according to their personalities, which is the characteristic of low-context society. The heroin, YoungHye is transformed from an easygoing woman to a passive woman, and the husband becomes the person who intentionally organizes his life from the person who uses the condition. Therefore, the same person shows different aspect upon each culture, it is the cultural perspective what the translator changed. On the stylistic side, especially, the sentence with cultural implications is transformed or deleted by the translator`s own viewpoint so that the reader of the target culture can easily understand it. In addition, she changed the Korean style into the English style. As a result, this translated book is read well enough to be considered an original English one by readers. This translation strategy of domestication is intended for readers who value content rather than cultural specificity and who have little interest in the original language and vocabulary. Therefore, this translation is another English book of The Vegetarian, written in the background of Korea.

자기실현의 관점으로 본 척 팔라닉의 『파이트 클럽』

This paper is aimed at examining Fight Club (1996) by Chuck Palahniuk, having been largely regarded as fiction satirizing consumer capitalism, from the perspective of self-actualization and self-healing that could help create a new healthy personality by integrating the persona and the shadow. The anonymous narrator, a yuppie persona, represents the submissive ordinary man emasculated by late capitalism. He creates his opposite character.a violent anarchist Tyler Durden. unconsciously to realize the typical masculinity idealized by modern culture. The two characters organize a fighting club, and then build a violent program called “Mayhem Project” to destroy modern society built on the idea of consumerism. In the process of carrying out the project, the narrator recognizes the reality of masculinity distorted by culture. He makes a bold decision to get rid of Tyler, his shadow character. With this resoluteness, he evolves into a new character. He integrates the characteristics of Tyler with his own. This story revolves around a man who cannot trust himself because of distorted modern culture, he realizes the opposite value instead, finds out the defect of mass media-produced masculinity and gets rid of it to integrate his broken identities. He heals himself of this modern cultural illness and grows up to develop his new identity. (Sungkyunkwan University)

This article explores the process in which a conscious change from a slave to a freeman is depicted in Beloved, through the story of the ex-slave Sethe. She is relieved from the trauma caused by her slave life, immediately after the emancipation. The story is written with intent not only to reconstruct the African-American history but also to give a healing effect on the pride of African-Americans. Unlike many critics, the writer argues that Beloved, the ghost, is Sethe’s shadow for the closer coherence through her life. Beloved is the result of Sethe’s doublethink: she substituted the truth for the false, the resentment at her mother for the longing, and the sense of guilt of killing her baby as a manifestation of her spirit of resistance against the white. The incarnation of those long-suppressed emotions, Beloved, leads Sethe to reflect on the past to realize the truth. With her, Sethe creates the unconditionally loved childhood to compensate her lost childhood. And Sethe’s long experience of working as a paid worker stimulates her to awaken her self-esteem - the critical difference between the value of a slave and the one of a freeman. As a result of integration of those experiences, Sethe wins freedom from her trauma and gets new identity as a free matured man. In conclusion, Sethe’s healing comes from her own self.
