        Stereoselective Total Synthesis of (+)-Licochalcone E

        The synthesis of (+)-licochalcone E (1) was accomplished for the first time in 13 steps from aryl bromide (6) with 8% overall yield. Palladium-catalyzed Negishi-Reformatsky coupling reaction of compound 6 with ethyl 2-(tributylstannyl)acetate provided the aryl acetic ester (5), which was converted to aryl acetamide (4) via mixed anhydride formation. Chiral auxiliarymediated methylation of the (S)-4-benzyl-2-oxazolidinone-derived aryl acetamide (4) provided the key asymmetric benzylic methyl group in compound 1.

        Selected growth of second phase on BiOBr facets via spatial charge separation towards enhanced photocatalysis activity

        The recombination rate of electrons and holes determine the photocatalytic effect. Au nanoparticle (NPs) were loaded on the (110) plane of BiOBr via a ultrasonic method while PbO2 NPs were loaded on the (001) plane. The ultrasound not only promoted the formation of the NPs but also resulted indirectionally transfer of electrons and holes in the different crystal planes, where electronsmainly exist in (110) planes while holes accumulate on (001) planes. Namely, ultrasonic waves caused BiOBr layer spacing to increase and destroy the balance of its built-in electric field. The loading of Au NPs enhanced the photocatalytic performance.

        Culture-Positive Spontaneous Ascitic Infection in Patients with Acute Decompensated Cirrhosis: Multidrug-Resistant Pathogens and Antibiotic Strategies

        Purpose: This study investigated multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens and antibiotic strategies of culture-positive spontaneousascitic infection (SAI) in patients with acute decompensated cirrhosis. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 432 acute decompensated cirrhotic patients with culture-positive SAI from11 teaching hospitals in China (January 2012 to May 2018). A Cox proportional hazards model analysis was conducted to identifyindependent predictors of 28-day mortality. Results: A total of 455 strains were isolated from 432 ascitic culture samples. Gram-negative bacteria (GNB), gram-positive bacteria(GPB), and fungi caused 52.3, 45.5, and 2.2% of all SAI episodes, respectively. Episodes were classified as nosocomial (41.2%), healthcare-related (34.7%), and community-acquired (24.1%). Escherichia coli (13.4%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (2.4%) were extendedspectrumβ-lactamase producing isolates. The prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was 1.1%. Ceftazidime,cefepime, aztreonam, and amikacin were recommended as first-line antibiotics agents for non-MDR GNB infections; piperacillin/tazobactam and carbapenems for MDR GNB in community-acquired and healthcare-related or nosocomial infections, respectively;and vancomycin or linezolid for GPB infections, regardless of drug-resistance status. Multivariate analysis revealed days ofhospital stay before SAI, upper gastrointestinal bleeding, white blood cell count, alanine aminotransferase, serum creatinine concentration,total bilirubin, and international normalized ratio as key independent predictors of 28-day mortality. Conclusion: MDR pathogens and antibiotic strategies were identified in patients with acute decompensated cirrhosis with culture-positive SAI, which may help optimize therapy and improve clinical outcomes.

        Antioxidant Mechanism and Lipid Peroxidation Patterns in Leaves and Petals of Marigold in Response to Drought Stress

        In this study, malondialdehyde (MDA), relative conductivity (RC), superoxide anion (O2・-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) as well as ascorbic acid (AsA), glutation (GSH) and carotenoid (Car) were analyzed in plants under drought condition to investigate the enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant defense mechanisms of leaves and petals, respectively. Two different drought resistance marigold cultivars (Tagetes erecta L. cv. Chokdee and Tagetes erecta L. cv. Discovery)treated with 6-day drought stress were used at early flowering stage. Results indicated that drought treatment increased MDA, RC, O2・- and H2O2 contents in the two cultivars, especially in drought-sensitive cultivar ‘Discovery’. In contrast,‘Chokdee’ had higher level antioxidative enzyme activities and more non-enzymatic antioxidants than those in ‘Discovery’. SOD, POD, CAT, APX activities and non-enzymatic antioxidants (GSH and AsA) in the leaves and petals were increased at the beginning treatment, and decreased later. The activity of CAT in leaves and petals, APX in petals and AsA in petals on day 6 after treatment were lower than those in control, while Car in the two cultivars decreased consistently during drought stress treatment. In addition, all the antioxidant enzyme activities in the leaves were higher than those in petals, but AsA and GSH were accumulated at lower levels in leaves than those in petals of the both cultivars. Furthermore, significant linear relationships were found between antioxidative enzymes and reactive oxygen species (ROS), as well as in non-enzymatic antioxidants and ROS. In conclusion, drought tolerance of ‘Chokdee’ was correlated with eliminating the O2・- and H2O2 and maintaining lower lipid peroxidation as well as higher membrane stability by increasing activities of antioxidative enzymes and the amount of non-enzymatic antioxidants. Furthermore, different drought response mechanisms were involved in leaves and petals of marigold under drought stress.

        Decode-and-Forward Relaying for Cooperative NOMA Systems With Direct Links

        <P>This paper investigates a cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access system, in which a base station communicates with two far users with the aid of a decode-and-forward (DF) relay. Three cooperative relaying schemes, namely, the fixed relaying (FR), the selective DF with coordinated direct and relay transmission (SDF-CDRT), and the incremental-selective DF (ISDF) relaying are proposed to enhance the outage performance for the two far users by utilizing both the direct and relay links. Taking into account the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) events at the relay, the SDF-CDRT scheme adaptively forms an orthogonal transmission branch with respect to the direct link or keeps silent to reduce error propagation. Besides considering the relay detection results, the ISDF scheme further exploits the limited feedback of the received SNR events from two users, so that error propagation can be avoided and unnecessary relaying can be reduced. Analytical expressions for the outage probabilities and average throughputs of the paired users are derived in closed-form for the three cooperative relaying schemes. Asymptotic expressions for the outage probabilities are derived in the high SNR region. It is shown that the FR and SDF-CDRT schemes achieve a diversity order of one for both users, while the ISDF scheme achieves a diversity order of two for both users. The superior system performance achieved by the proposed schemes over those of the existing methods is verified by Monte Carlo simulations.</P>

        MiR-204 acts as a potential therapeutic target in acute myeloid leukemia by increasing BIRC6-mediated apoptosis

        Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is one of the most common hematological malignancies all around the world. MicroRNAs have been determined to contribute various cancers initiation and progression, including AML. Although microRNA-204 (miR-204) exerts anti-tumor effects in several kinds of cancers, its function in AML remains unknown. In the present study, we assessed miR-204 expression in AML blood samples and cell lines. We also investigated the effects of miR-204 on cellular function of AML cells and the underlying mechanisms of the action of miR-204. Our results showed that miR-204 expression was significantly downregulated in AML tissues and cell lines. In addition, overexpression of miR-204 induced growth inhibition and apoptosis in AML cells, including AML5, HL-60, Kasumi-1 and U937 cells. Cell cycle analysis further confirmed an augmentation in theapoptotic subG1 population by miR-204 overexpression. Mechanistically, baculoviral inhibition of apoptosis protein repeat containing 6 (BIRC6) was identified as a direct target of miR-204. Enforcing miR-204 expression increased the luciferase activity and expression of BIRC6, as well as p53 and Bax expression. Moreover, restoration of BIRC6 reversed the pro-apoptotic effects of miR-204 overexpression in AML cells. Taken together, this study demonstrates that miR-204 causes AML cell apoptosis by targeting BIRC6, suggesting miR-204 may play an anti-carcinogenic role in AML and function as a novel biomarker and therapeutic target for the treatment of this disease.         Subproteomic profiling from renal cortices in OLETF rats reveals mutations of multiple novel genes in diabetic nephropathy

        Background: Ovarian cancer is a common gynecological malignancy among female patients and poses a serious threat to women's health. Although it has been established that Fos-like antigen 2 (FOSL2) is linked to ovarian cancer (OC), its exact role in the development of OC remains unknown. Objective: This article aims to investigate the role of FOSL2 in ovarian cancer development. Methods: FOSL2 expression in ovarian carcinoma and adjacent tissues was assessed using real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR and western blot. We constructed OE/sh-FOSL2 plasmids and Caspase-1 specific inhibitors (Yvad-CMK) and transfected A 2780 cells with them to identify the relevant cell functions. Furthermore, we used western blot assay to determine the changes in expression of apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a CARD (ASC), cysteine aspartate-specific proteasezymogen procaspase 1 (pro-caspase-1), cysteinyl aspartate-specific proteinase-1 (caspase-1), interleukin-1β precursor (pro-IL-1β), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-18 precursor (pro-IL-18), and interleukin-18 (IL-18). In addition, we measured the concentration of IL-1β and IL-18 using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Moreover, Tthe level of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in the cell supernatant was measured by LDH release assay kit. Results: The expression of FOSL2 was significantly higher compared with the surrounding tissues. The proliferation, migration, and invasion of A2780 cells were enhanced after transfection with OE-FOSL2 plasmids; however, the cell apoptosis was significantly decreased. When FOSL2 was overexpressed, the inflammasome-associated proteins such as ASC, caspase-1, IL-1β, and IL-18 were downregulated. Furthermore, FOSL2 induced apoptosis and activated the production of inflammasomes in A2780 cells. Co-therapy with Yvad-CMK and substantially inhibited apoptosis and activation of inflammasomes. Conclusions: Inhibition of FOSL2 promotes the apoptosis of OC cells by mediating the formation of an inflammasome.

        Special Quantum Steganalysis Algorithm for Quantum Secure Communications Based on Quantum Discriminator

        The remarkable advancement of quantum steganography offers enhanced security for quantum communications. However, there is a significant concern regarding the potential misuse of this technology. Moreover, the current research on identifying malicious quantum steganography is insufficient. To address this gap in steganalysis research, this paper proposes a specialized quantum steganalysis algorithm. This algorithm utilizes quantum machine learning techniques to detect steganography in general quantum secure communication schemes that are based on pure states. The algorithm presented in this paper consists of two main steps: data preprocessing and automatic discrimination. The data preprocessing step involves extracting and amplifying abnormal signals, followed by the automatic detection of suspicious quantum carriers through training on steganographic and non-steganographic data. The numerical results demonstrate that a larger disparity between the probability distributions of steganographic and non-steganographic data leads to a higher steganographic detection indicator, making the presence of steganography easier to detect. By selecting an appropriate threshold value, the steganography detection rate can exceed 90%.

        Total synthesis of (±)-licochalcone E (1), an allyl retrochalcone isolated from roots of Glycyrrhiza inflata, has been achieved from 4-tetrahydropyranyloxyacetophenone (7) with (E)-2-methoxy-4-(2-methyl-2-butenyloxy)benzaldehyde (6) or (Z)-2-methoxy-4-(2-methyl-2-butenyloxy)-benzaldehyde (11) through a convergent strategy involving aldol condensation and Claisen rearrangement as key steps.
