Authora observed distribution of basophilic cells in scraped nasal mucosa of the allergic rhinitis (78 cases), nasal polyp(22 cases) and normal controls (46 cases), and also observed basophilic cells in nasal mucosa of the vasomotor rhinitis(8 cases), nasal polyp(25 cases) and middle ear mucosa of the otitis media(7 cases), after fixing with Mota s basic lead acetate solution and 10% buffered formalin solution, and staining with 0.5% toluidine blue(pH 0.5). The results weve as follows '. L. After fixing with Mota's solution, the number of basophilic cells were 751.1+86.6(Mean+S. E.) cell per 2mmx2mmx40pm, in scraped nasal mucosa of the allergic rhinitis, and was greater than that of nasal polyps(65.7k22.5 cells) and normal controls(1.9+0.2 cells, p<0.05). 86.7%(642. 3 cells) of the surface basophilic cells in allergic rhinitis was formalin-sensitive basophilic cells 2. Eighteen cases(94.7%) of nasal polyp(19 cases) showed below 100 basophilic cells, and only one case showed 136 basophilic cells. But in allergic rhinitis patient(78 cases), 70 cases(89.7%) showed over 100 basophilic cella. 3. The distributions according to age groups showed that the number of surface basophilic cells in above 50 years old group was much less than below 39 years old group, in mucosa of the allergic rhinitis after fixing with Motas solution(p<0.05). 4. The distribution according to allergens showed that the number of surface basophilic cells in housedust mites waa greatest in other allergens (pollen, houaehold insect mixture, fungua), in the allergic rhinitis after fixing with Mota's solution (p<0.05). 5. There was correlation(r=0.35037) between skin test index and the number of surface basop- hilic cells after fixing with Mota'8 801ution, and also correlation(r=0.41088) between akin test index and formalin-sensitive basophilie cells in allergic rhinitis(p<0.05) 6. The number of surface basophilic cells in naaal polyp was 65.7+22.5 cells and was greater than that of normal controls(p<0.05). 7. In the vasomotor rhinitis, the number of for- malinsensitive basophilic cells were 24.2(85.8%) cells per 1mm XlmmX5pzn in epithelium, 65.7 (43.2%) cells in upper lamina propria, and 39.2 (31.6%) cells in lower lamina propria. 8. In stroma of nasal polyp, the number of formalin-sensitive basophilic cell were 37.5(23.8%) cells per 1mm X 1mm X5pen, and that of formalinresistant baosphilic cell were 119.8(76.2%) cells. 9. In lamina propria of the middle ear mucosa from the otitis media, the number of formalinsensitive basophilic cell were 27.3(25.5%) cells per 1mm X 1mm X5pm and that of formalin-resistant basophilic cell were 79.7(74.5%) cells. Author concluded that the number of surface basophilic cells was increaaed in allergic rhinitis. The case over 100 surface basophilic cells could be suspected as allergic rhinitis in case of negative skin test. And the number of basophilic cells in nasal mucosa of the vasomotor rhinitis, nasal polyp and middle ear mucosa of otitis media were increased, but type 1 allergic reaction could not be suspected. Other allergic reaction or nonimmunologic intlammatory reaction with basophilic cells would be studied more precisely.
