        There have been many problems like plasmolysis in the ultrastructural studies with kelps. The present study was conducted with series of different fixatives and buffer solutions and several resins to solve the plasmolysis phenomena. The fixative of 1470 mosmol(3% glutaraldehyde. 2.4% paraformaldehyde in 0.05M cacodylate buffer with 0.2M sucrose and 0.5% caffeine at pH of 7.2) showed the least frequency of plasmolysis. The relationshiop between the concentration of primary fixatives and the frequency of plasmolysis was not found. With above fixative the possibility of Generally, the kelp (Laminaria religiosa) contains as lot of mucilage, which interupts the infiltration of fixative. The posiible physiological mechanisms related with mucilage secretion may be unable to fix region of plasmalemma properly.

      • The Ultrastructure of the Chlorococcalean Picoplankton Isolated from the Western Channel of the Korea Strait

        A picophytoplankton has been isolated from the western channel of the Korea Strait. The cell was isolated by dilution method. It is about 2 ${\mu}m$ in diameter and has smooth surface. Organelles of nucleus, chloroplasts, mitochondrion, Golgi body, pyrenoids, vacuoles and lipid bodies are identified. Pigments are composed of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b, ${\beta}$-carotene and other xanthophylls. Based on the ultrastructural features and pigment composition, it may belong to chlorococcalean picoplankton.

        애기다시마 식물의 미세구조 연구 : Ⅰ . 고정액 조성 Ⅰ . Composition of Fixatives

        대형 갈조류 미세구조 연구의 문제점인 원형질분리 현상을 다양한 농도의 고정액과 완충용액을 조합한 일련의 고정액으로 연구 검토하였다. 1차 고정액 조성 중 1470 mosmol 고정액 조성(3% glutaraldehyde, 2.4% paraformaldehyde, 0.05M cacodylate buffer, 0.2M sucrose, 0.5% caffeine, pH 7.2)이 뚜렷하지는 않았으나 원형질분리 현상의 빈도가 비교적 적었다. 각 고정액 조성과 원형질분리 현상의 빈도와의 연관성은 각 고정액 별로 큰 차이를 보여 주지 않았으나. osmolarity가 증가하면서 분리 현상의 빈도와 정도가 감소하였다. 그 중 원형질분리 현상의 빈도가 가장 낮은 고정액을 이용 하여 점도가 낮은 레이진을 사용하여 침투 과정에서의 원형질분리 가능성을 분석하였으나 특별한 차이가 없었다 전반적으로 다시마(Laminaria religiosa)의 특징인 다량의 점액질 때문에 고정액의 침투가 어렵고, 점액질의 분비에 따른 세포내 생리적 기작들이 원형질막의 고정을 난이하게 만드는 요인으로 확인되었으나, 다른 세포 내용물들의 고정 상태는 양호하였다. With above fixative the possibility of plasmolysis during infiltration period was not identified using ultra-low viscosity resin. Generally, the kelp(Laminaria religiosa) contains a lot of mucilage, which interupts the infiltration of fixative. The possible physiological mechanisms related with mucilage secretion may be unable to fix the region of plasmalemma properly.

        낙동강 하구역 식물플랑크톤 생물상 변동과 출현종 고찰

        Long-term and systematic monitoring of phytoplankton is important, as phytoplankton serve as indicators of water quality status in aquatic environments. In the present study, the plankton community structure of the Nakdong River estuary over the past 30 years was investigated by literature survey to provide references for the occurrence of planktonic species. A total of 876 species from 18 taxonomic lineages were reported and, among them, 569 species were identified to occur seasonally at the Mulgeum, Seonam and Eulsukdo sites. Diatoms and chlorophytes were dominant in the microscopic studies. The 54 species at the Mulgeum and the 96 species at the Eulsukdo sites have not been reported since the river barrage construction in 1987. The majority of reports speculate that there has been a change in the aquatic environment, particularly the plankton community structure, due to operation of a river barrage since 1987.

      • 초·중고교생의 흡연실태에 관한 연구

        This study was carried out by questionnaires from elementary, middle, and high school students. Among 2079 students surveyed in total, 853 students were from elementary school, 896 from middle school, and 503 from high school. 1. Smoking experience among all alementary, middle, and high school students were relatively low percentages, which was 17.55%, but the percentage was increased with higher grades. 2. First smoking experience of students varied from preschool to high school. The experiences were 48.4% between the fourth grader in elementary school and the second in middle school. Thus, the education on smoking prohibition was suitably carried out from the higher graders in the elementary school. 3. The percentage of smoking by curiosity was highest, 48.14%, and the percentage by social environments was increased with own maturity of students. Thus, smoking is related with social environments and mass media, 4. 22.28% students who have smoking experience became the habitual smoker, and 41.95% students among smoking students were expressed difficulties in smoking prohibition. Thus, it is urgent to develop the program for an effective education on smoking prohibition. 5. The percentage of students who recognized harmo by smoking was 40.20% only, and only 36.54 of students were normally educated on harms by smoking from schools. Based upon the results, it is necessary to strengthen the educations on health and smoking prohibition in elementary, middle, and high school.

      • 저온처리한 오이의 자엽에서 광합성 활성의 광의존성 저해

        저온에 노출된(4℃에서 24시간)오이 유식물에서 자엽의 산소 발생률 및 quantum yield, CO₂고정능, 실온에서 측정한 엽록소 형광유도의 변화 등을 조사하였다. 저온의 광조건에 노출된 오이 유식물에서 자엽의 최대 산소 발생률, quantum yield, CO₂고정능, variable fluorescence가 현저히 감소하였다. 특히 저온의 광조건은 엽록소 형광유도에서 Fo를 증가시키고 (Fv)m/Fm을 감소시켰는데 이는 광저해로 인하여 광계 II의 반응중심이 손상되고 광합성 활성이 감소된데서 기인한 것으로 생각된다. 또한 저온처리 동안 엽록소 형광소멸에서도 암조건보다 광조건에서 qQ가 크게 감소하였으나 qNP는 차이가 없었고, 저온처리 이후의 회복과정에서도(24시간) 암조건보다 광조건에서 엽록소 형광의 relaxation이 느리고 낮게 나타나 오이 잎의 광합성 기구가 저온의 광처리에 의해 보다 심하게 저해되었음을 알 수 있었다. 특히 stress indicator인 ??은 저온의 암조건에서 20% 감소한 반면, 광조건에서는 60%나 감소하여 오이의 광합성기구가 저온에 매우 민감하게 반응하는 것 으로 생각되었으며 이는 광합성기구에 대한 저온장해가 뚜렷하게 광의존성임을 나타낸다. The photosynthetic activities in relation to oxygen evolution rates, quantum yield, CO₂ uptake rates and room temperature chlorophyll fluorescence were investigated in cotyledons of cucumber seedlings exposed to low temperature(at 4°C) for 24 h. Light-chilling caused more inhibition on light-saturated maximum oxygen evolution rates, quantum yield, and CO₂uptake rates than dark-chilling did in the cucumber plant. Light-chilling induced more marked increase in Fo and decrease in (Fv)m/Fm than dark-chilling did in the room temperature chlorophyll induction kinetics. The above results affected by chilling in the light are considered to be associated with the partial damage of the reaction center of PS Ⅱ and the decreased photosynthetic activities. There occurred a large decrease in qQ with little change in qNP in the light-chilling plant. When light-and dark-chilled plants were recovered at room temperature for 24 h and their chlorophyll fluorescences were induced with light doubling technique, light-chilled plants showed more smaller magnitude and rate of fluorescence relaxation than dark-chilled plants. These suggest that light-chilling might cause some alterations in transthylakoid △pH formation, and that photosynthetic apparatus of cucumber cotyledons is more susceptible to light-chilling In the fast fluorescence induction kinetics ?? was decreased by 60% in the light-chilled plants with reference to 25°C light-grown plants, while the dark-chilled plants showed a decreased rate of only 20% with reference to 25°C dark-treated plants for 24h, indicating that cucumber seedling is very sensitive to chilling stress. So, it is certain that chilling injury to the photosynthetic apparatus is strongly dependent on the presence of light in cucumber seedlings.

      • The Effects of Heavy Metals in Seaweeds

        The present brief review focuses on some toxic effects of heavy metals in seaweeds. There have not been much studies on the effects of heavy metals in seaweeds. However, their effects are significant on their growth rate, morphology and other metabolic processes. Therefore, the possible impacts on the coastal community with respect to the primary productivity and the energy flow should not be underestimated. Seaweeds are able to accumulate some metals without any toxic effects. The uptake of some metal species in seaweeds has been explained by the adsorption/ion-exchange mechanism of various polysaccharides like alginate, the energy required processes, and other kinetic models. Some seaweeds have been considered as indicators of heavy metal pollution because of their capability of accumulation. Comprehensive biological studies of suitable species and their tissue contents of heavy metals should be prerequisite background for the implication of those species as bioindicators The concentrations of heavy metals(Cd,Cu,Zn,Pb,Fe,Cr,Co,Ni,Hg,As,Sr)in seaweeds of 33(including 6 unidentified) species of Chlorophyta, 50 (11) of Rhodophyta and 73(14) of Phaeophyta are listed in this review. Among these Enteromorpha, Ulva, Gracilaria, Polysiphonia, Ascophyllum, Fucus, Laminaria and Sargassum are frequently reported algal species.
