Purpose: The purpose of this study was to integrate and synthesize findings from qualitative studies exploring male students’ experiences of adapting to nursing education programs so as to obtain further understanding of the phenomenon. Methods: The meta-synthesis process was primarily guided by Noblit and Hare’s approach, which consists of four stages including searching, appraisal of an individual study’s quality, data extraction for analysis, and meta-synthesizing the results. Results: Findings from the literature reviewed were synthesized into six themes: 1) extraordinary choice based on job stability and gender scarcity; 2) unexpected feeling of marginalization as minority far apart from the mainstream; 3) assimilation and negotiation for relational adaptation through perspective shift; 4) fortifying the vision and identity as nursing students by meaning making for adapting to the nursing major; 5) mutual support among colleague male students; and 6) serving in the military as way of hiding out and achieving maturation. Conclusion: The findings illustrate that nursing education programs need practical changes promoting male students’ adaptation to the program itself as well as preparation to be a professional nurse in the future.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to verify the validity and reliability of the Type D Scale-14 (DS14). Methods: The participants were 288 patients who were diagnosed with angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, and hypertension. DS14 was developed by Denollet(2005) and consists of two domains, 7 items on negative affectivity (NA) and 7 items on social inhibition (SI). The Korean version of DS14 was developed through translation-reversed translation and a preliminary test. Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire. Cronbach α and Guttman split-half were used to test reliability and item analysis and factor analysis for validity. The SPSS program was used. Results: 35.8% of the participants were classified as Type D. Mean score for NA was 16.80 and for SI, 14.10 in Type D participants. For reliability of NA, Cronbach α=0.771, and for SI, 0.707. Factor analysis on 12 items(numbers 1 & 3 were excluded as the corrected item-total correlations were below r=0.3) yielded two factors for NA (6 items) and SI (6 items). Number 7 in the NA domain was sorted into the SI domain. Conclusion: The results indicate, the cultural differences were between Europeans and Koreans. Repetition of the research is needed for generalization of DS14.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identified the male nurses' encounter in adapting themselves in the hospital settings dominated by the female nurses in number. Method: Data were collected through the in-depth interview of 16 male nurses and analysed through the grounded theory methodology. Result: The behaviors of male nurses for job-adaptation can be summarized as a series of struggles to consolidate their own ground. They have made tremendous efforts to hold their own ground in the nursing profession composed of a large numbers of female nurses, while they have experienced many difficulties and problems as minorities. They have struggled to adapt themselves professionally through efforts such as; challenging the social and professional barriers, identifying the job identity, empowering themselves through self-development and dedication, expanding their influence among colleagues. In spite of these efforts, they had the perception that nursing is not a lifelong occupation for them. Thus, they had tendency to find outlets of change to occupations. Conclusion: A specific strategy is needed to provide an environment that is helpful for males in integrating into and adapting to the nursing profession.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate relationship among intention to retention, role conflicts, psychosocial job conditions and job satisfaction of new nurses, and identify affecting factors for intention to retention. Methods: Data were collected from 136 new nurses who were graduated at 2016 and working now in general hospitals by self-reported questionnaire. The relationship among variables were analyzed with Pearson’s coefficient correlation and affecting factors for intention to retention were identified by using multiple linear regression analysis. Results: The mean score of intention to retention was 2.63±0.28. Intention to retention was significantly different by the working ward, hope period for work, and reason for retention. Intention to retention had positive relationships with work organization and job contents, and job satisfaction, but negative relationships with frequency of role conflict, demands at work. Job satisfaction and meaning of work identified as influencing factors inn intention to retention. Conclusion: It is needed a positive hospital environment to improve adaptation in clinical nursing practice and to emphasize professionalism including value of nursing and meaning of nurses’ work for new nurses.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the positioning which was perceived by nursing students from their clinical practice experiences. Methods: The data were 80 narratives of practice experience written by 20 nursing students. Using qualitative contents analysis, nursing students reflective narratives were analyzed in the aspects of the positioning which including personal characteristics, designated social role, and ethical order. Results: In personal characteristics, nursing students positioned themselves as they had vague fear and cold feet about the physical and personal environment of the clinical setting. In the aspects of the designated social role, they positioned themselves to learn more knowledge and skills of the nursing, to put effort in maintaining good relationship with their patients and other nurses, and to evaluate the nurses on their job performances and professional attitudes. In ethical order, nursing students positioned themselves as a person who worries about their work as a future professional nurse. Conclusion: The result of this study can be used to better understand nursing students and application of the nursing students narratives in the clinical practice education, and to facilitate positive outcomes and transitions from nursing students to nurses.
