Useless Tribute, Desirable Exotics: Japanese Folding Fans in China, 1000–1500

During the premodern era, folding fans were among the few handicrafts that China imported from Japan. The availability of Japanese folding fans in China changed along with Sino-Japanese relations. They were rare during the Northern Song due to the suspension of diplomatic relations, but after the Ming court reestablished a tributary relationship with the Ashikaga shogunate in the early fifteenth century, many more Japanese folding fans entered China via tribute trade. The scholar-officials, who generally admired the delicate Japanese-made folding fans, chose to emphasize different values of the fans in different contexts. The Japanese folding fans were “useless tribute” in the scholar-officials' public writings, but in reality the “Japan” brand actually increased the commercial value of the fans in the market.

16세기 포교와 무역을 목적으로 일본에 온 포르투갈인을 통해 형성된 이들 문화에 대한 동경과 관심은 17세기 네덜란드를 중심으로 하는 이국 문화의 적극적인 수용으로 나타났다. 이 무역 교류를 통해 유입된 이국의 문물은 대중의 일상 공간 속에서 다양 한 형태로 출현하였다. 타국 간에 형성되는 사람과 물품의 상호 교류를 통한 문화의 수용과 이해는 이국인과 이문화를 체험할 수 있는 기회로 작용하였다. 문화 전파 과정 에 있어서 물품을 매개로 이루어지는 수용활동은 다양한 형태로 변용, 확산되었다. 이 국문화의 대중적인 생산과 소비는 이국취미로 전달되면서 대중화현상으로까지 확대되었다. The admiration and the interest in people culture formed through the Portuguese who came appeared to Japan by the aggressive accommodation of the foreign country culture to do led by the Netherlands in the 17th century for the purpose of propagation and trade in the 16th century. The foreign civilization flowed in through this trade interchange appeared with a variety of forms in daily life space of the public. I am going to watch it well how Japanese understood a foreign country.

This short story published in "Shin Si Cho" in November 1915, is one of the first Christian literature produced by Akutagawa . The “cigarette and devil” is a typical example of his writing which describes Christianity as a subject of “exoticism”. The writer suggests that “the advent of god consequently results in the advent of devils; therefore, it is reasonable to propose that importing the goodness from Western society at the same time, brings along the evil. This is the main theme of the story, demonstrating that there are two sides to all things. Such theme is emphasized and further depicted using the concept of “exoticism” and also by parodying cow seller’s faulty religious belief. This story, in addition to Akutagawa ’s early work, raises the fundamental problem of two sides existing in all matters.
