Vol.26 No.4

The characteristics of asymmetry in muscle strength of female college students are still unknown. This study aims to evaluate of characteristics of asymmetry in muscle strength. Both methods of isometric and isokinetic maximal muscle strengths of elbow and knee joints were measured in fortyfour female college students. In dominant/nondominant difference, isometric maximal muscle strength and isokinetic muscle endurance of dominant in the flexion of elbow joint were approximately 9% and 14% higher than those of the non-dominant, respectively(p<.05, p<.01), but there was no difference in the knee joints. The dominant/non-dominant ratio(DNDR) of isokinetic muscle endurance strengths in the elbow were approximately 1.2 times higher than those of isometric strengths. In flexion/extension difference, the isometric flexor strength were approximately 17% and 31% higher than those of the extensor strength in the elbow joint, respectively(p<.05, p<.01). In the knee joint, the flexor strengths of all measured muscle were consistently approximately 48~56% lower than those of the extensor strength. There was no significant difference between competition muscle strength ratio(CMSR) of each muscle strengths in the knee. These results suggested that differences of DNDR and CMSR among measured muscle strengths more appear in the elbow than in the knee joint.

Hong, Wan-Sung,Kim, Gi-Won The Korean Society of Physical Therapy Vol.19 No.6

Purpose: To evaluate the quantitative isometric muscle strength of shoulder girdle and the test reliability using by the equipment, named 'IsoTrack', selected by authors in the former studies. Methods: Thirty healthy subjects (9 men, 21 women) were recruited in two sessions, one for intratester and intertester reliability tests and the other quantitative isometric muscle strength tests. The neck flexion, extension and scapular elevation muscle strength was measured using a force measuring device as IsoTract. Results: Intraclass correlation coefficients for intratester reliability of the all subjects ranging between 0.96 and 0.97. For intertester reliability, the ICC and Pearson correlation correspond to 0.84 and 0.78. We gauged muscle strength of shoulder girdle muscles based on it and indicated quantified isometric muscle strength of women and men in left and right side. Conclusion: We concluded that there were high reiliability of isometric muscle strength of neck and shoulder girdle. Also, we gauged muscle strength of shoulder girdle muscles based on it and indicated quantified isometric muscle strength in left and right side in women and men. So this findings may assist in the measure of whole body muscle strength.

The characteristics of muscle strength in Korean traditional archers are still unknown. This study aims to evaluate of muscle strength laterality in Korean traditional archers. Twenty men were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of Korean traditional archery experience; Korean traditional archer group(archer, n=10) and ordinary control group(ordinary, n=10). Maximal isometric muscle strengths of each joint were measured by Micro-FET2(Hoggan Health Industries, UT), as well as back muscle strength and grip strength. The back muscle strength in archer was significantly higher than that of ordinary(p<.05). Maximal isometric muscle strengths of each joint, excluding grip strength, elbow flexion and knee extension, were also significantly higher than that of ordinary(p<.05, p<.01, p<.001), respectively. Dominant muscle strengths of shoulder flexion, shoulder external rotation and wrist extension were significantly higher than those of non-dominant side in archers(p<.05), respectively. These results suggested that Korean traditional archery might promote total body muscle strength, especially induce the development of shoulders and wrists muscle strength in dominant side.

Trunk Muscle Strength After Lumbar Spine Fusion: A 12-Month Follow-up

        Outi Elina Ilves,Marko Henrik Neva,Keijo Häkkinen,Joost Dekker,William J. Kraemer,Sami Tarnanen,Kati Kyrölä,Jari Ylinen,Kirsi Piitulainen,Salme Järvenpää,Tiina Kaistila,Arja Häkkinen 대한척추신경외과학회 2019 Neurospine Vol.16 No.2

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate changes in trunk muscle strength 12 months after lumbar spine fusion (LSF) compared to preoperative strength. Methods: A total of 194 patients (mean±standard deviation [SD] age, 61±21 years) who underwent LSF participated in this prospective longitudinal study. Physical measurements of the participants were made before surgery and 12 months postoperatively. Isometric trunk extension and flexion strength was measured using a strain-gauge dynamometer in the standing position. Strength changes were calculated. Regression analysis was performed to explore which factors predicted strength levels at 12 months postoperatively. Results: The preoperative mean±SD extension strength was 205±144 N, which increased to 258±142 N (p<0.001) at the 12-month follow-up. Flexion strength increased from 295±172 N to 364±164 N (p<0.001). The preoperative extension/flexion strength ratio was 0.75±0.38 and remained similar (0.73±0.26) at 12 months postoperatively (p=0.39). Conclusion: Although trunk muscle strength increased by 26% for extension and 23% for flexion at the 12-month postoperative follow-up, both values remained objectively low. In addition, flexion strength remained higher than extension strength, which indicates an imbalance between those muscle groups. Age, severe back pain, and low trunk muscle strength before surgery predicted low trunk muscle strength at 1 year after spinal fusion.

Vol.19 No.-

This study was to investigate the relationship between flexibility and muscular factors including isometric and isokinetic strength. For the purpose, 11 females volleyball and 15 handball players participated this study. we measured the sit and reach for flexibility and isometric strength of knee flexion, in addition, isokinetic strength and power by isokinetic equipment. After then, we analyzed the correlation between flexibility and strength. The results were followed as: 1. flexibility of volleyball players was higher but isometric strength was lower. 2. handball players' isokinetic strength was higher in peak torque, %BW. 3. On the peak power, volley ball players' power was higher than handball with higher flexibility. 4. flexibility had positive correlation with peak power, the other side had negative correlation with peak strength. Therefore we concluded that according to the kind of strength demanded various flexibility program should be prepared for the improvement, especially for the peak power improvement.

최동성 ( Dong Sung Choi ),전용관 ( Justin Y Jeon ),원영신 ( Young Shin Won ),이해동 ( Hae Dong Lee ) 한국운동역학회 2011 한국운동역학회지 Vol.21 No.3

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among isometric and isokinetic muscle strength, lean body mass(LBM) and bone mineral density(BMD) in the elderly. Eleven males(age, 70.27±5.78yr; height, 167.36±6.68 cm; weight, 68.34±8.23 kg) and thirteen female(age, 69.77±4.13yr; height, 152.80±4.45 cm; weight, 56.86±7.40 kg) participated in this study. In all subjects, LBM and BMD segments was measured by using Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry(DEXA, Lunar DPS-DM, U.S.A.). Maximum isometric and isokinetic muscle strength of flexion and extension at the knee and elbow, ankle, trunk joints were measured by using an isokinetic dynamometer(CON-TREX(R) Multi Joint Testing Module, Switzerland). The results of this study showed that isometric and isokinetic muscle strength was significantly higher in extension than flexion. In the male and female, hamstring to quadriceps strength ratio(H:Q ratio) was increased as contraction velocity increased. BMD was correlated significantly with trunk extension in the male, but not in the female. LBM was correlated significantly in the male and female with knee extension strength. This study suggests that in the elderly muscle strength training program should put more weight on extensor muscles of the body.

Vol.28 No.3

The muscle strengths in various postures are used in our daily life with or without our recognition. Also, many works are still performed with strengths, although mechanization and automation have been fairly accomplished at the industry site. Since the late seventies, various body measurements have been conducted periodically in Korea, however, muscle strengths have not been measured actively. For this reason, the muscle strength data have been hardly accumulated. The aims of this study are to learn more about the physical strength of young-aged Koreans and to provide basic information for designing equipments, tools and facilities in the work site and daily life. The muscle strengths that are related to shoulder and upper limbs joints, which are used frequently, are measured in this study. Eighteen muscle strengths, from seven different movements such as elbow flexion, elbow extension, shoulder abduction(seated), shoulder adduction(seated), shoulder rotation(internal and external), lifting a tray, and turning a key(inward and outward) were measured. For every movement, the muscle strengths for both hands were measured. In each measurement, five seconds averaged value and peak value were collected. Comparing the average value, the strength of shoulder adduction was the strongest for male and female, while strength of turning a key inward with left hand was the weakest for male and female. Strengths of preferred hand in elbow extension, shoulder abduction, shoulder external rotation, lifting a tray, and turning a key were stronger than those of non-preferred hand for both male and female. Rohrer's index considerably had an effect on muscle strength. The results of this study can provide some basic information not only in designing the equipment and facilities in work site or daily life, but also in selection, training and management of workers.

Vol.21 No.4

The purpose of this study was to estimate one-repetition maximum(1-RM) by isometric maximal strength in female adults. 50 female adults were performed isometric strength in seven weight training machines (leg extension; LE, leg curl; LC, chest press; CP, shoulder press; SP, abdominal curl; AC, arm curl; RC, latpull down; LD). Isometric muscular strength was determined tensiometer(model JNB-500L). After 48 hours later, 1-RM measurement were followed. The data analyzed correlation isometric muscular strength and 1-RM. also regression analysis used for development of regression equations to predict one repetition maximal strength. The result was shown that high correlation between isometric strength and 1-RM(r=.58~.80, p<.01), R2=.42~.67 had linear relation. Regression equations were LE(1-RM)=70.84+0.58×(MVC)+0.47×(Body Weight; BW), LC(1-RM)=26.89+ 0.35×(MVC), CP (1-RM)=0.59×(MVC)+0.45×(BW), SP(1-RM)=0.61×(MVC), AC(1-RM)=0.62×(MVC), RC(1-RM) =0.33×(MVC)+0.16×(BW), LD(1-RM)=0.33×(MVC)+0.49×(BW). In conclusion, the regression equations on this study may be predicted acceptable degree of accuracy to 1-RM of weight training machines and isometric test can provide a valid estimation of 1-RM performance in untrained female adults.

Vol.18 No.3

The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of kinesio taping application using Medx to measure and analyze the influence of kinesio taping on isometric muscle strength of knee joint angles when kinesio taping is applied to the quadriceps and hamstring muscles during extension, flexion of the articulatio genus muscles. By applying kinesio taping to twenty athlete (10 men, 10 women), we measured muscle strength of the articulatio genus muscles in each angles(6°,24°,42°,60°,78°,96°) before and after the application of kinesio taping, The results are as follows: For men, research has shown that extensor muscular strength of articulatio genus at each extension angle has increased in all angles after applying the kinesio taping. Also, there was a statistical increase in muscular strength except the 42" angle. For women, there was a numerical increase in muscular strength but no statistical difference(p<.05). For men, in flextion muscular strength of the articulatio genus at each flexion angle, application of kinesio taping led to increase in muscular strength. No statistical difference in all angles. For women, muscular strength has improved after applying kinesio tapinz but no statistical increase. As result. this research demonstrated that applying the kinesio taping has positive effects on the maximum strengths of the extensor and flection muscles of the articulatio genus according to knee joint angles.
