New Modularization Method to Design Supervisory Control of Automated Laboratory Systems

Vol.23 No.1

This paper describes the application of discrete event systems theory to the design of an automated laboratory system. Current automated laboratory systems typically consist of several interacting processes that must be carefully sequenced to avoid any possible process conflicts. Discrete Event Systems (DES) theory and Supervisory Control Theory (SCT) can be applied together as effective methods of modeling the system dynamics and designing supervisory controllers to precisely sequence the many processes that such systems might involve. Classical approaches to supervisory controller design tend to result in complex controller structures that are difficult to implement, maintain, and upgrade. In this paper, a new approach to designing supervisory controllers for automated laboratory systems is introduced. This new approach uses a modular controller structure that is easier to implement, maintain, and upgrade, and deals with "state explosion" issues in a novel and efficient way.

      • On A Safety of Sequential Control System Based on Gröbner Bases Computation

Vol.2010 No.10

This paper provides an approach of safety verification of logic control system with application of Grobner bases method. We propose a method to analyze and design a safe control system using a safety fucntion. In this case, the safety is defined to represent a safety domain in the state space. Using a plant model and controller examples with appropriate predetermined safety function, we can evaluate whether the whole system is safe or not. Illustrative example shows that the proposed method is effective for verifying safety and designing safe control system.

Vol.11 No.5

In this paper, our goal is to design the controller which operates a manufacturing system, discrete event system, guaranteeing user specification. In specially, based on supervisory control theory W. M. Wonham, our work consists in performing the controller using Petri nets possible parallelism. In addition, we consider the problem of allocation for resources sharing of the issues to consider when designing using Petri net. The controller can be generated by synthesis of user specification model and plant model after giving the management for the resource sharing. This created controller can control the deadlock and starvation which can occur in the case with resource sharing. Previous studies proposed the Constrained Synchronous Reachability graph to synthesis of the two Petri nets models. Therefore, we provide the controlled system which forbids a deadlock and starvation using the result of previous studies.

How Economic Inequality Has Increased by Tax Cuts? Power-Based Modular Supervisory Control of Discrete Event Systems

IEEE 2014 IEEE transactions on automatic control Vol.59 No.10

This technical note presents a new modular supervisory control based on powers in which an event is enabled if the total power of local controllers to enable it is greater than the total power of local controllers to disable it. We present the conditions of controllability and power-observability of a common control objective of all local controllers to achieve the objective by modular control. Then, we apply the proposed power-based modular control scheme to the political economy problem: How economic inequality has increased by tax cuts? Even though most ordinary citizens of the United States believe that growing economic inequality is a bad thing, they supported tax cuts leading to the massive upward transfer of wealth since 1980. This technical note shows that this contradiction can be analyzed using the notion of power-observability which implies that if most citizens would have been well-informed, they would have opposed the tax cuts and politicians could have not easily pushed such policies to increase inequality.
