Background: Common regional anesthesia approaches for video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) include paravertebral block (PVB) and erector spinae plane block (ESPB). PVB is considered a deep nerve block which is contraindicated in antithrombotic therapy. ESPB is effective when administered as a bolus, as well as continuously. However, the recently proposed intertransverse process block (ITPB) ensures more effective diffusion of the local anesthetic into the paravertebral space.Case: We report cases of three patients who received bolus ITPB (costotransverse foramen block and mid-point transverse process-to-pleura block in one and two cases, respectively) combined with continuous ESPB when a deep nerve block could not be administered. Opioids were not required postoperatively, and all postoperative numerical rating scale scores (0–10) at rest were maintained below 4.Conclusions: The combination of bolus ITPB and continuous ESPB may be an alternative analgesic method when deep nerve blocks are contraindicated in VATS.

Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci 6605 has two mul- tidrug resistance (MDR) efflux pump transporters, MexAB-OprM and MexEF-OprN. To understand the role of these MDR efflux pumps in virulence, we generated deletion mutants, ∆mexB, ∆mexF, and ∆mexB∆mexF, and investigated their sensitivity to plant-derived antimicrobial compounds, antibiotics, and virulence. Growth inhibition assays with KB soft agar plate showed that growth of the wild-type (WT) was inhibited by 5 μl of 1 M catechol and 1 M coumarin but not by other plant-derived potential antimicrobial compounds tested including phytoalexins. The sensitiv- ity to these compounds tended to increase in ∆mexB and ∆mexB∆mexF mutants. The ∆mexB∆mexF mutant was also sensitive to 2 M acetovanillone. The mexAB- oprM was constitutively expressed, and activated in the ∆mexF and ∆mexB∆mexF mutant strains. The swarming and swimming motilities were impaired in ∆mexF and ∆mexB∆mexF mutants. The flood inocula- tion test indicated that bacterial populations in all mu- tant strains were significantly lower than that of WT, although all mutants and WT caused similar disease symptoms. These results indicate that MexAB-OprM extrudes plant-derived catechol, acetovanillone, or cou- marin, and contributes to bacterial virulence. Further- more, MexAB-OprM and MexEF-OprN complemented each other’s functions to some extent.
Behavior of piston rings passing over cylinder ports in two-stroke cycle engines
Kohei Nakashima,Yuki Nakano,Soichi Ishihara,Yoshio Murakami,Masago Yamamoto 대한기계학회 2010 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.24 No.1
In two-stroke cycle engines, the piston and piston ring slide over not only the cylinder wall but also the cylinder ports. This study investigates whether piston rings project and get caught in the cylinder ports. We installed strain gauges, on the bottom sides of piston rings, over the intake and exhaust ports, and plotted the variation of strain per cycle, while running the engine. By examining the variation in strain on the bottom of the piston ring, we clarified that our piston ring indeed became momentarily caught in the cylinder ports.
OUTREACH ACTIVITY USING THE INTERNET TELESCOPE
UEDA, HARUHIKO,YAMAMOTO, YUKI,OMOTE, MINORU,SAKODA, SEIJI,TODA, KOUICHI The Korean Astronomical Society 2015 天文學論叢 Vol.30 No.2
We here report on the outreach activity using the Keio University Internet telescope performed by Science agora 2012 and 2013 in Tokyo. Many visitors came to our booth and operated the Keio University Internet telescope, and our project was awarded the prize of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. In addition, based on the questionnaire for that occasion, the usefulness of the Internet telescopes in outreach activities is considered.
Analysis of Coupled-Inductor Configuration for an Interleaved High Step-Up Converter
Wilmar Martinez,Jun Imaoka,Yuki Itoh,Masayoshi Yamamoto,Kazuhiro Umetani 전력전자학회 2015 ICPE(ISPE)논문집 Vol.2015 No.6
High step-up converters are widely used in sustainable energy systems and recently used in automotive applications due to their high voltage gain capability. Nevertheless, with the purpose of obtaining a higher voltage gain, in comparison with conventional boost converters, current high step-up converters often employ additional multiplier cells, which may lead to significant cost-up and low power density. Therefore, a novel two-phase interleaved high step-up converter is proposed in order to minimize additional circuit volume used to achieve large voltage gain. The proposed converter addresses the purpose by a particular coupled inductor where three windings are installed in one or two cores. As a result, the proposed converter can achieve higher voltage gain than the conventional topologies by adding a winding and two diodes to the interleaved two phase boost chopper, besides the coupled-inductor configuration. This paper evaluates two arrangements of the coupled-inductor configuration of the proposed high step-up converter: 1. Three windings integrated in only one core and 2. Two independent inductors with a shared winding. The result revealed that the proposed converter shows higher voltage gain than the normal boost converter and the magnetic integration in the coupled-inductor configuration further increases the voltage gain by 20%.
Evaluation of Flight Size Auto Tuning On 3.5G Commercial Wireless Packet Access Network
Katsumi Sekiguchi,Satoru Imai,Yukie Yamamoto,Noriyoshi Meuchi,Osamu Takahashi 대한전자공학회 2008 ITC-CSCC :International Technical Conference on Ci Vol.2008 No.7
In this paper, we evaluate a performance of Flight Size Auto Tuning (FS-AT), a TCP congestion control method for high speed wireless access networks, on the commercial network of 3G and 3.5G mobile communication systems. HSDPA expands a bandwidth of IMT-2000 to maximum at 14Mbps. The expanded bandwidth increases bandwidth delay product (BDP) on an end-to-end channel. TCP is necessary to set congestion window (cwnd) larger than BDP to achieve maximum throughput of the channel capability. However, if cwnd becomes too large for BDP, TCP sender transmits packets excessively and packets are accumulated on a radio interwoking node. To solve this problem, FS-AT is proposed as a congestion control method for high speed wireless access networks. In this paper, we implementedFS-AT on Linux Server and evaluated its performance on the commercial packet access network of 3G and 3.5G mobile communication systems.
