Design load-carrying capacity estimates and an improved wooden shore setup
Huang, Y.L.,Lin, Y.C.,Lee, C.F.,Chen, H.J.,Yen, T. Techno-Press 2004 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.17 No.2
The design load-carrying capacities of wooden shores depend on factors, such as the wood species and properties, and construction methods. This paper focuses on the construction methods, including an upright single shore, group of upright shores, group of inclined shores, butt connections and lap connections. This paper reports experiments to obtain critical loads and then developed an empirical equation based on Euler' formula for the critical loads and design load-carrying capacities. The test results show that the critical loads for an upright single wooden shore are greater than the average values for a group of upright shores, and the latter are greater than the average values for a group of inclined shores. Test results also show that the critical loads become smaller when butt or lap connections are used, butt connections possessing greater critical loads than lap connections. Groups of inclined shores are very popular at work sites because they have some practical advantages even though they actually possess inferior critical loads. This paper presents an improved setup for constructing groups of inclined shores. With this method, the inclined shores have larger critical loads than upright shores. The design load-carrying capacities were obtained by multiplying the average critical loads by a resistance factor (or strength reduction factor, ${\phi}$) that were all smaller than 1. This article preliminarily suggests ${\phi}$ factors based on the test results for the reference of engineers or specification committees.

Conclusions This exploratory analysis suggests a positive relationship between efficacy and ramucirumab exposure with manageable toxicities in East Asian patients from RAINBOW, consistent with the overall exposure-response analysis from this trial. A regimen with a higher dosage of ramucirumab warrants further consideration for East Asian patients with gastric/GEJ cancer.

Relative Genetic Effects of Duroc and Taoyuan Breeds on the Economic Traits of Their Hybrids
Yen, N.T.,Tai, C.,Cheng, Y.S.,Huang, M.C. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2001 Animal Bioscience Vol.14 No.4
For determining the relative genetic effects of Duroc (D) and Taoyuan (T) breeds on the economic traits of their hybrids, 72 litters of pigs, from four mating types, namely TT (T♂$\times$T♀), DD (D♂$\times$D♀) and D-T hybrids (TD, T♂$\times$D♀ and DT, D♂$\times$T♀) were used in this study. The various crossbreeding parameters were estimated by comparisons among mating types using linear contrasts of least-square analysis. The results of reproductive traits analysis showed that T breed had contributed superior genetic effects on the total number of piglets at birth (TBN) (p<0.10) and number of live piglets at 21 days (LP21) (p<0.05) to the D-T hybrids. Estimates of maternal genetic effects showed that the T females were superior in TBN (p<0.05), but inferior in average birth weight (ABW) and average litter birth weight (LBW) (p<0.01) to the D females. Direct heterosis effects were significant for LBW, LP21 and LWT21 (p<0.01). Least-squares analysis of other economic traits showed that T breed had relative negative effects on all growth traits, withers height (WH), body type index (BTI), average backfat thickness (ABF), carcass length (LENG), loin eye area (longissimus) (LEARA), and lean percentage (LEAN) of D-T hybrids (p<0.05). Estimates of direct genetic effects showed that the D breed was superior to the T breed in all growth and carcass traits except the average backfat (BF). Estimates of maternal genetic effects showed that average body weight at 180 days (WT180) of progenies from T sows were lighter than from D sows. Progenies from D females had larger and leaner carcass than those from T females. Direct heterosis effects were significant for average daily weight gains from 150 to 180 days ($ADG_{150-180}$) (p<0.05) and for average body weights at 150 (WT150), and 180 days (WT180), average daily weight gains from birth to 150 and 180 days ($ADG_{150}$ and $ADG_{180}$, respectively), WH, body length (BL), ABF, BTI, and LENG (p<0.01). The results showed that D-T hybrids tended to have superior TBN and LP21 than D breed, and to be superior in all growth and most conformation and carcass traits to the T breed.

Background/AimsHypopharyngeal multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH (HMII-pH) technology incorporating 2 trans-upper esophageal sphincter impedance channels has been developed to detect pharyngeal reflux. We used the HMII-pH technique to validate the candidate pharyngeal acid reflux (PAR) episodes based on the dual-pH tracings and determined the interobserver reproducibility. MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study in tertiary centers in Taiwan. Ninety patients with suspected laryngopharyngeal reflux and 28 healthy volunteers underwent HMII-pH test when off acid suppressants. Candidate PAR episodes were characterized by pharyngeal pH drops of at least 2 units and reaching a nadir pH of 5 within 30 seconds during esophageal acidification. Two experts manually independently identified candidate PAR episodes based on the dual-pH tracings. By reviewing the HMII-pH tracings, HMII-pH-proven PAR episodes were subsequently confirmed. The consensus reviews of HMII-pH-proven PAR episodes were considered to be the reference standard diagnosis. The interobserver reproducibility was assessed. ResultsA total of 105 candidate PAR episodes were identified. Among them 84 (80.0%; 95% CI, 71.0-87.0%) were HMII-pH-proven PAR episodes (82 in 16 patients and 2 in 1 healthy subject). Patients tended to have more HMII-pH-proven PAR episodes than healthy controls (median and percentile values [25th, 75th, and 95th percentiles]: 0 [0, 0, 3] vs 0 [0, 0, 0], P = 0.067). The concordance rate in diagnosing HMII-pH-proven PAR episodes between 2 independent observers was 92.2%. ConclusionOur preliminary data showed that 80.0% (71.0-87.0%) of the proposed candidate PAR episodes were HMII-pH-proven PAR episodes, among which the interobserver reproducibility was good.
Asymptotic-Preserving Weno Schemes for Boltzmann Model Equations and Rarefied Gas Flow Simulation
Jaw-Yen Yang,Manuel Diaz,W. Y. Kang,J. C. Huang 한국전산유체공학회 2014 한국전산유체공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2014 No.10
A class of asymptotic-preserving implicit-explicit Runge-Kutta WENO schemes for solving the Boltzmann model equation is presented. The conserved discrete ordinate method for discretize the velocity space is implemented. The asymptotic-preserving time integrating scheme allows larger time step and limiting Euler solution to be approached in the Chapman-Enskog expansion. Computations of rarefied gas flows covering wide Knudsen numbers are given to illustrate the method. The present strategy provides an accurate and robust framework for treating rarefied gas flows. The method is also applicable to semiclassical Boltzmann model equation and its solutions will be also included.
Simulation of Axisymmetric Scramjet Combustion Flowfields Using Weno Navier-Stokes Solvers
Jaw-Yen Yang,J.C. Huang,Y S. Lai,C. S. Kuo 한국전산유체공학회 2014 한국전산유체공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2014 No.10
This study is based on the theory of gas dynamics and uses the Navier-Stokes equations as the governing equations to solve the fluid flow field problems of the scramjet. For the turbulent flow, we use the simple Spalart-Allmaras one equation turbulence model (S-A model) which produces better results for near wall and boundary layer flow field problems. The lower-upper symmetric Gauss-Seidel (LU-SGS) implicit scheme, whose results converge efficiently under steady state conditions, is combined with the Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (WENO) scheme to construct a numerical model of the scramjet. Using the WENO scheme’s high-order accuracy and its non-oscillatory solution at discontinuous areas, we can solve supersonic flow field problems with multiple shock wave interactions. This simulation procedure is verified against two partial examples from literature to ensure its accuracy, and is then applied to a complete geometric model of a scramjet with different initial conditions for a full flow field analysis. The Mach number, density, static temperature and pressure are found and the results discussed. It is found that even when the shock waves are very close to each other, the WENO scheme produces better simulation results than other numerical approaches.

Due to the influence of nonlinearity and time-variation, it is difficult to establish an accurate model of concrete frame structures that adopt active controllers. Fuzzy theory is a relatively appropriate method but susceptible to human subjective experience to decrease the performance. This paper proposes a novel artificial intelligence based EBA (Evolved Bat Algorithm) controller with machine learning matched membership functions in the complex nonlinear system. The proposed affine transformed membership functions are adopted and stabilization and performance criterion of the closed-loop fuzzy systems are obtained through a new parametrized linear matrix inequality which is rearranged by machine learning affine matched membership functions. The trajectory of the closed-loop dithered system and that of the closed-loop fuzzy relaxed system can be made as close as desired. This enables us to get a rigorous prediction of stability of the closed-loop dithered system by establishing that of the closed-loop fuzzy relaxed system.
