The purpose of this study is to develop models and instruments for teaching and assessing scientific experiments and practices. General objectives for teaching and evaluating scientific experiments and practices in secondary schools were analyzed and categorized into three domains:they were inquiry skill, scientific thinking skill, and scientific attitude. The sub-categories for each domain were constructed, and specific objectives for each general objective were also stated in terms of behavioral objectives according to Mager's suggestion. The tables of specification (content×behavior) were developed in order to assist secondary school teachers to teach and evaluate scientific experiments in class. In addition, we introduced some useful assessment techniques which can be adopted to evaluating learning outcomes of each specific objective. The sample test items corresponding to each objective were listed for practical usage in class.

<P>The aim of this study was to investigate the protective ability of blackberry extract (BE) against oxidative stress in carbon tetrachloride (CCl<SUB>4</SUB>)-treated rats. The results showed that treatment with BE attenuated lipid peroxidation that was increased by CCl<SUB>4</SUB> and also markedly recovered the activity of antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione reductase (GR), that were decreased by CCl<SUB>4</SUB>. BE also elevated the protein expression levels of NF-E2-related factor-2 (Nrf2), CuZnSOD, MnSOD, GPx-1/2, and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), but not that of catalase. Furthermore, the administration of BE significantly attenuated the levels of serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) that were increased by CCl<SUB>4</SUB>. Therefore, the present study suggests that BE possesses significant protective effects against in vivo oxidative stress.</P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/jf2021804'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

교류전압에서 사용하는 고체절연 재료에 대해 내트래킹지수(PTI, proof tracking index)는 재료와 가공 부품의 품질관리를 위한 방법 및 허용 기준으로 쓰이며, 비교트래킹지수(CTI, comparative tracking index)는 재료들의 특성 비교 및 기본 특성화 작업에 주로 활용된다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 PTI 및 CTI를 측정하는 과정에서 일어날 수 있는 제반 문제점을 검토하고 이들의 올바른 성능확인을 위한 기준을 정립하고자 한다.

볼프레셔 시험은 세라믹 재료를 제외한 비금속 재료의 내열성을 시험하는 방법중의 하나이다. 본 볼프레셔 시험과 관련된 규격으로는 IEC 60695-10-2의 국제 규격이 있으며, 국내에는 KS C IEC 60695-10-2의 한국산업 규격이 있다. 본 논문에서는 볼프레셔의 성능확인 시험으로써, IFM이 제공한 시료를 가지고 자국의 형태 및 자국의 크기 등의 분석 방법에 대한 비교숙련도 시험에 관하여 논하였다.

The volatile components of Korean and Chinese Inulae flos were identified. It is made of dried Inulae flos from the components were collected by simultaneous steam distillation extract method. Those were analyzed by combined gas chromatography(GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometrt(GC/MS). Sixty two components, including 10 hydrocarbons, 7 aldehydes, 18 alcohols, 3 ketones, 5 esters, 13 acids and 6 miscellaneous components were identified. Volatile components in Inulae flos were fractinated into one hydrocarbon fraction and two oxygenated hydrocarbon fractions by using silica gel column chromatography. The volatile components consisted of 16.85% hydrocarbon and 83.15% oxygenated hydrocarbons in Korean Inulae flos, 23.46% hydrocarbon and 76.53% oxygenated hydrocarbons in Chinese Inulae flos.
A novel synthesis route for Pt-loaded SnO2 nanofibers and their sensing properties.

<P>A novel one-pot synthesis method for Pt-loaded SnO2 nanofibers is reported on the basis of the sol-gel and electrospinning-combined process. The ultraviolet illumination was used for in-situ growth of Pt nanoparticles in the electrospinning solution. The sensing capability of pure SnO2 nanofibers was significantly improved by loading Pt nanoparticles. The Pt-loaded SnO2 nanofibers showed a good selectivity to toluene gas. The optimization of Pt amount in SnO2 nanofibers was essential to obtain best sensing performances. The one-pot synthesis method developed in this work may extend the use of oxide nanofibers in chemical gas sensors.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Repositioning of plant extracts and chemical drugs can accelerate drug development. However, its success rate may depend on what the clue is for the repositioning. Recently, repositioning based on correction of unwarranted gene expression pattern has suggested the possibility of new drug development. Here, we designed a similar method for the repositioning of nutraceutical ginseng (<I>Panax ginseng</I> C.A.Mey.), which is one of the most validated natural therapeutic products for various diseases. We analyzed ginseng-induced gene expression profiles using the connectivity map algorithm, which is a database that connects diseases, chemical drugs, and gene expression. Ginseng was predicted to show the same effects as those of topoisomerase I inhibitors. In a subsequent <I>in vitro</I> assay, ginseng extract unwound coiled or supercoiled DNA, an effect comparable to that of the topoisomerase I inhibitor, camptothecin. Furthermore, ginseng extract induced synthetic lethality with suppression of the Werner syndrome gene. The collected data implicate ginseng as a candidate antitumor agent owing to its topoisomerase I inhibitory activity and further validate the usefulness of differentially expressed gene similarity-based repurposing of other natural products.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A functional similarity between natural extracts and already known drugs was analyzed based on gene expression patterns. </LI> <LI> Target of natural products can be predicted by such an analysis. </LI> <LI> <I>Panax ginseng</I>extract intervenes topoisomerase I activity as effectively as the professional inhibitors like camptothecin. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>- Gene expression patterns between ginseng and other chemical drugs was compared. - The analysis revealed inhibitory effect of ginseng against topoisomerase I activity.</P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
