We developed the educational purpose mobile application, named "Wild Flowers of Bukhansan National Park (version 1.0)", aiming for easy identification of wild flowers for students and visitors in the park. When visitors find a flower or part of plant in the park, visitors can search for its name utilizing the pictures and characters provided in their own smartphone mobile devices or tablet PCs. The application provides pictures of wild flowers in the park and character-based searching system based on 12 diagnostic features (e.g., growth form, leaf arrangement, flower symmetry, petal color, petal number, sepal number, etc). We adopted the complete floristic survey of Chung and Lee (1962) and added species that we confirmed their distribution in the park during the development of this application. In summary, number of vascular plants in this park was estimated to be 428 taxa including 100 families, 280 genera, 327 species, 1 subspecies, 50 varieties, and 5 formas. We provided a total of 588 pictures representing 358 taxa and each taxon includes multiple pictures in many cases. Included identification quizzes can be an efficient educational tool as well as fun activity for students and visitors who are learning plant species in Korea. Our next step will include GPS function in the application for indicating visitor's location and for providing previously reported sites of the species that we interested in the map of the park. The future application which includes GPS function will be a valuable tool for the monitoring of rare plants, plant researches related to the climate changes, etc. We currently provide Korean iPhone version only, and English version and both of android versions will be serviced soon.

Copper(II) acetate spectrophotometry method (CASM) was used for the rapid and convenient determination of cation exchange capacity (CEC) in soils. This method is composed of a single-step exchange reaction that adsorbs copper and is measured through spectrophotometry. The CEC of 16 Korean soils were measured using 1M ammonium acetate method (AAM) and the CASM. The CEC values determined by CASM and AAM were not significantly different, and were highly correlated (r = 0.966**). Due to the convenience, cost effectiveness, and time saving analysis of CASM, this method is recommended for most soil laboratories to measure CEC in Korean soils. However, CASM may not be applicable for soils that have a much higher CEC (greater than 20 cmolc kg-1).
Sorption and leaching characteristics of pesticides in volcanic ash soils of Jeju Island, Korea
Park Won-Pyo,Chang Kong-Man,Hyun Hae-Nam,Boo Kyung-Hwan,Koo Bon-Jun 한국응용생명화학회 2020 Applied Biological Chemistry (Appl Biol Chem) Vol.63 No.6
It is important to evaluate leaching behavior in agricultural soils to prevent the pollution of groundwater by pesticides. We identified the distribution coefficients (K d ) of ten pesticides with different physicochemical properties and compared their leaching characteristics using wick lysimeters from three distinct soil types on Jeju Island. The K d values varied by pesticide and soil, but were within the range of 1.2 to 4231 L kg −1 . Based on the European standard (K d < 10 L kg −1 ), six pesticides (alachlor, ethoprophos, carbofuran, napropamide, tebuconazole, and etridiazole) were mobile in at least one tested soil, and their soil organic carbon affinity was ≤ 5.811. This value differed greatly from the other pesticides (16.533 and higher). The solubility of the six mobile pesticides was ≥ 32 mg L −1 , which substantially differed from the other pesticides (≤ 0.71 mg L −1 ). Thus, we conclude that our mobility assessment, which is based on K d values, can be used to predict the leaching of pesticides in the volcanic ash soils of Jeju Island. The use of pesticides should be strictly controlled to reduce the possibility of groundwater contamination.

Leaching experiments of bone-meal phosphorus (P) solubilization by the sulfur-oxidizing bacteria Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans was carried out using the shake-flask methodology. The effects of bone meal dosage, bio-sulfur (bio-S) concentration, and amount of bacterial inoculum on the efficiency of P solubilization were determined. The bone meal was dissolved in bacterially produced sulfuric acid to form “soluble P.” An increase in concentration of bio-S as an energy substrate for the acidophilic A. thiooxidans increased the P solubilization efficiency. Upon addition of 5% bio-S, 10% bone meal, and 10% A. thiooxidans to the leach suspension, its pH dropped from 5.22 to 1.92 between days 30 and 40 of the leaching experiment; this resulted in an increase in water-soluble P concentration by 23.8 g P2O5 L-1. The soluble P concentration in the suspension from the bioleaching experiment was >20 times higher than that in conventional liquid bone-meal fertilizers. Inorganic nutrients, such as N, Ca, and Mg, were also solubilized in the suspension during the bioleaching experiment. The role of bio-S as an energy substrate for acidophilic bacteria to leach P from bone meal during formulation of biofertilizers could potentially be exploited in the management of crop nutrients in organic farming.

Park Seung-Jae,Suh Yoon-Taek,Kim Dae-Won,Kim Maeng-Hyun,Song Won-Pyo,Koh Hee-Seog The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2005 KIEE International Transactions on Electrophysics Vol.5C No.4
The synthetic breaking test method was developed to evaluate the breaking performance of ultra high-voltage circuit breaker and made up of two independent circuits; current source circuit and voltage source circuit. In application of this test method, it is necessary to extend the arc of the test breaker. So, the new re-ignition system using VTGS (Vacuum Triggered Gap-Switch) was constructed to improve the efficiency and reliability of this test. In this re-ignition system, VTGS operates in high vacuum state of $5{\time}10^{17}$torr and control system consists of the triggering device and the air M-G (Motor-Generator). This re-ignition system showed the operating characteristics, such as delay time ($t_d$) and jitter time ($t_j$ not exceeding 5us and 1us respectively, and had the operating voltage of $25\~150kVdc$ at the gap distance of 24mm.

We have designed a 30 cm cryogenic space infrared telescope for astronomical observation. The telescope is designed to observe in the wavelength range of 0.5~2.1 μm, when it is cooled down to 77 K. The result of the preliminary design of the support structure and support method of the mirror of a 30 cm cryogenic space infrared telescope is shown in this paper. As a Cassegrain prescription, the optical system of a 30 cm cryogenic space infrared telescope has a focal ratio of f/3.1 with a 300 mm primary mirror (M-1) and 113 mm secondary mirror (M-2). The material of the whole structure including mirrors is aluminum alloy (Al6061-T6). Flexures that can withstand random vibration were designed, and it was validated through opto-mechanical analysis that both primary and secondary mirrors, which are assembled in the support structure, meet the requirement of root mean square wavefront error <λ/8 for all gravity direction. Additionally, when the M-1 and flexures are assembled by bolts, the effect of thermal stress occurring from a stainless steel bolt when cooled and bolt torque on the M-1 was analyzed.

This study was conducted to determine the validity by comparing the soil erodibility factor (K) values, which were calculated by rainfall simulator conditions (Kobs) and in the Universal Soil Loss Equation (KUSLE) from eight sites of black volcanic ash soils (BVAS) in Jeju Island and developed a new soil erodibility factor equation based on the physical properties of BVAS. The KUSLE value showed negative values in BVAS, indicating other methods for soil erodibility estimation need to be developed. The Kobs value had a significant positive correlation with the runoff rate (p < 0.01) and positively correlated with fine sand (0.02 - 0.2 mm) and clay / (silt + very fine sand). A significant negative correlation was observed between the Kobs and silt (0.002 - 0.02 mm) (p < 0.05), saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat), and infiltration rate (p < 0.01), all of which indicate the effect of these physical properties on the soil erodibility factor. As a result of multiple regression analysis, K = - 0.1492 + 0.0036 runoff rate - 0.0908 Ksat + 0.0112 fine sand (0.02 - 0.2 mm) (R² = 0.981, p < 0.01). Therefore, the developed equation may be used as the soil erodibility estimation for USLE to predict soil erosion in BVAS on Jeju Island.
