This study was carried out to have basic and applied informations to find the optimum nitrogen fertilization level for organic cultivation and to investigate early growth characteristics of Schizandra chinensis Baillon. Different application levels of the organic fertilizer were based on the recommended rate of N fertilizer. Five different levels of the organic fertilizer were applied to S. chinensis and early growth responses such as the length of vine, the diameter of vine, the number of leaves, and the number of branches were investigated. Lengths of main and total vines were shown longer at the level of 1.0 time organic fertilizer than those at others. The vine length at early growth was the highest at the level of 1.0 time organic fertilizer among the treatments. Stem diameter was shown thicker level of 1.0 time organic fertilizer than others on August and September, whereas on October it was the thickest in the conventional cultivation. Number of leaf was increased higher at the level of 1.0 and 2.0 times organic fertilizer than that in the compared to conventional. The number of branches was appeared the lowest at the level of 1.0 time organic fertilizer at early growth, however they were increased through progressing their growth stages. They were not significantly difference among the treatments except for the level of 2.0 times organic fertilizer. Based on the research results, the growth of S. chinensis was commonly higher at the level of 1.0 time organic fertilizer compared to other treatments.

Food is critical to the survival and development of insects. Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae), a Lepi doptera model insect with economic significance, is a well-known oligophagous insect that mainly feeds on mulberry leaves. The feeding characteristics of this particular species provide an excellent model for studying the food selection of insect host plants. In recent years, there has been an increasing number of studies on the factors affecting the feeding of silkworms, especially with the development of molecular technology. Many mysteries have been gradually solved. This paper summarizes and discusses the factors that affect the feeding of silkworms, with a focus on the molecular mechanisms of silkworm feeding. It is hoped that this work will be helpful for further research on artificial diets for silkworms and disease control in lepidopteran insects.

Background: Cancers have dysfunctional redox regulation resulting in production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), damaging DNA, RNA and free NTPs, and causing the accumulation of oxidative nucleic acids in cytoplasm. The major types are 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine(8-oxoGsn) in RNA and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2' deoxyguanosine(8-oxodGsn) in Mt-DNA. The MTH1 protein sanitizes oxidized nucleotide pools from NTPs to monophosphates, preventing the occurrence of transversion mutations. This study concerned cytoplasmic 8-oxodGsn/Gsn and MTH1 expression in gastric cancer and para-cancer tissues and elucidated roles of nucleic-acid oxidation and anti-oxidation. Materials and Methods: A polymer HRP detection system was used to detect 8-oxo-Gsn/dGsn and MTH1 expression in 51 gastric cancer and para-cancer tissue samples. Analyses of patient clinical and pathological data were also performed. Results: The expression of MTH1 and the 8-oxo-dGsn/Gsn ratio were significantly higher in cancer tissues than para-cancer tissues (P<0.05). Cytoplasmic 8-oxo-Gsn and MTH1 were both found to positively correlate (P<0.05) with tumor differentiation, while no significant associations were found with gender, age, invasion depth, lymph node metastasis and clinical stage (P>0.05). Conclusions: We found 8-oxo-dGsn/Gsn and MTH1 are both highly expressed in gastric cancer tissues, especially in well differentiated lesions. In addition, oxidated mtDNA is prevalently expressed in gastric cancers, while 8-oxo-Gsn expression in cytoplasmic RNA is a bit lower, but more selectively.
Synthesis of Cu-Ag@Ag Particles Using Hyperbranched Polyester as Template

In this manuscript, the third-generation hyperbranched polyester was synthesized with 2, 2-dimethylol propionic acid as AB2 monomer and pentaerythrite as core molecule by using step by step polymerization process at first. Then, the Cu-Ag particles were prepared by co-reduction of silver nitrate and copper nitrate with ascorbic acid in the aqueous solution using hyperbranched polyester as template. Finally, the Cu-Ag@Ag particles were prepared by coating silver on the surface of Cu-Ag particles by reduction of silver nitrate. The synthesized hyperbranched polyester and Cu-Ag@Ag particles were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, UV-vis spectra, x-ray diffraction, Laser light scattering, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and SEM. UV-vis spectra results showed that the Cu- Ag@Ag particles had a strong absorption band at around 420 nm. Laser light scattering and SEM studies confirmed that the most frequent particle sizes of Cu-Ag@Ag particles were 1.2 um. TGA results indicated that the Cu-Ag@Ag particles had good thermal stability.

Aiming at the unstable phenomena such as high DC-link voltage ripple that occur in the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor drive system of the small DC-link capacitor when the rotor speed is high or the load power is large, this paper proposes an active damping control method based on voltage compensation. The method starts from the mathematical model of the driving system, based on the characteristic equation of the driving system, and according to the Rouse stability criterion, the driving system is stabilized by applying a virtual resistance to change the coefficient of the characteristic equation. The proposed method only needs a bandpass filter to extract the DC-link voltage ripple, which is then compensated to the motor stator voltage axis by the damping coefficient. In order to obtain high damping performance, considering the time constant and the delay of the control loop, the theoretical design basis for a reasonable value of the damping coefficient is given, and the influence of the proposed method on the performance of the drive system is evaluated. Simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Differentiation of cultivation sources of Ganoderma lucidum by NMR-based metabolomics approach

<P>Introduction – Ganoderma lucidum is a widely used and high-value medicinal natural product. Correct identification of its cultivation source is important for proper quality assurance, but is so far mostly dependent on subjective morphological examinations.</P><P>Objective – To develop an efficient way of discriminating the cultivation sources of Ganoderma lucidum, particularly those from Korea and China, the two major sources of the mushroom using NMR-based metabolomic differentiation.</P><P>Methodology – Ganoderma lucidum samples were collected from Korea (26 samples) and China (20 samples), and their NMR spectra were obtained. The raw data were processed, and analysed using multivariate statistical analysis.</P><P>Results – Although conventional principal component analysis showed some overlaps, orthogonal projections to latent structure discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) provided clean distinction between samples from the two countries. Contributing signals were also identified using S-plot, and further verified with independent t-test. Final validation of the model was obtained using prediction test of the unknowns, where the model predicted all of the 14 test samples correctly. Distinction between the cultivation sources within China was also established.</P><P>Conclusion – The easiness and transferability of our NMR-based approach should contribute to addressing an important aspect of quality control process of Ganoderma lucidum. Therapeutic Regimens and Prognostic Factors of Brain Metastatic Cancers

Objective: This work aims to investigate the therapeutic regimen of brain metastatic cancers and the relationship between clinical features and prognosis. Methods: Clinical data of 184 patients with brain metastatic cancers were collected and analysed for the relationship between survival time and age, gender, primary diseases, quantity of brain metastatic foci, their position, extra cranial lesions, and therapeutic regimens. Results: The average age of onset was 59.1 years old. The median survival time (MST) was 15.0 months, and the patients with breast cancer as the primary disease had the longest survival time. Females had a longer survival time than males. Patients with meningeal metastasis had extremely short survival time. Those with less than 3 brain metastatic foci survived longer than patients with more than 3. The MST of patients receiving radiotherapy only and the patients receiving chemotherapy only were all 10.0 months while the MST of patients receiving combination therapy was 16.0 months. Multiple COX regression analysis demonstrated that gender, primary diseases, and quantity of brain metastatic foci were independent prognostic factors for brain metastatic cancers. Conclusions: Chemotherapy is as important as radiotherapy in the treatment of brain metastatic cancer. Combination therapy is the best treatment mode. Male gender, brain metastatic cancers originating in the gastrointestinal tract, more than 3 metastatic foci, and involvement of meninges indicate a worse prognosis.

Whether it is beneficial to dissect level V in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) patients with positive lateral neck lymph nodes at levels II-IV is still controversial, especially for low risk cases. In this study, we reviewed the medical records of 47 patients who underwent 47 ipsilateral selective lateral neck dissections (levels II-IV) for previously untreated papillary thyroid carcinomas between October 2006 and October 2008 to assist in establishing the optimal strategy for lateral neck dissection in low risk PTC patients with clinically negative level V nodes. All 47 patients were confirmed to have positive lymph nodes pathologically. Seventeen (36.12%), 36 (76.6%), and 34 (72.34%) patients had positive lymph nodes in levels II, III, and IV, respectively. The mean number of pathologically positive lymph nodes was 1.7 in level II, 2.9 in level III, 2.8 in level IV. No death and distant metastasis were recorded during follow up period. Just 2 patients exhibited recurrence to lymph nodes, and only one showed nodal recurrence in ipsilateral level V, who had positive lymph nodes in all of levels II, III, and IV at initial neck surgery. In conclusion, for PTC low risk patients with clinically negative lymph nodes in level V, non-performance of level V dissection would still achieve good survival results as traditional modified radical neck dissection, with a "wait and see" strategy to be recommended.
