Using neutron reflectivity with contrast variation, X-ray reflectivity, and grazing incident small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS), we have characterized the in-depth and in-plane structural characteristics of the Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films formed by a novel lecithin C60-derivative, FPTL, of three phospholipids jointly bonded on one single olefinic moiety of a C60 cage. Based on the neutron reflectivity measured, we have proposed a monolayer structure, with the C60 cages of FPTL lifted into the air and hydrophilic phospholipid heads immersed in water, for the FPTL Langmuir layer formed on water. On the other hand, the LB film of FPTL prepared on mica exhibits clear Kiessig fringes in the X-ray reflectivity profile, indicating a 27 angstroms monolayer film with less molecular orientation. With GISAXS, we have extracted an in-plane correlation length of about 210 A for a possible in-plane aggregation of C60 of FPTL in the LB monolayer. We have also demonstrated the highly ordered monolayer structures of a lecithin lipid, in elucidating the positive effect of the attached functional group-phospholipids on the monolayer formation of the lecithin C60-derivative.

We review the recent SAXS activity on the 1.5-GeV electron storage ring at the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC). Typical measurements featuring in grazing incident SAXS for soft materials are illustrated. Complex measurements using simultaneous SAXS/DSC and SAXSIWAXS for the correlations between the crystallization and mesoscale ordering in a polymer blend and a polypeptide-block-polypseudorotaxane diblock copolymer are presented. We also introduce a dedicated SAXS beamline which is planned at NSRRC.

Although the switched reluctance motor (SRM) has a several advantages such as simple magnetic structure, robustness, wide range of speed characteristics and simple driving, it has a considerable inherent torque ripple and speed variation due to the driving characteristics of pulse current waveform and the nonlinear inductance profile. The high torque ripple and speed variation inhibits wide application. The minimization of the torque ripple is very important in high performance servo drive applications, which require smooth operation with minimum torque pulsations. This paper presents the new SRM torque modeling technique for the control of instantaneous torque. The SRM is modeled by the database of torque profiles for every small variation in currents and rotor angles, which is inferred from the several measured data by the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference technique Simulation results demonstrating the effectiveness of proposed torque modeling technique are presented.

We conducted simultaneous, small-angle, X-ray scattering/differential scanning calorimetry (SAXS/DSC) and simultaneous, wide-angle, X-ray scattering (WAXS)/DSC measurements for a polymer blend of poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone)/poly(ethylene glycol)(PCL/PEG). The time-dependent SAXS/DSC and WAXS/DSC results, measured while the system was quenched below the melting temperature of PCL from a melting state, revealed the competitive behavior between liquid-liquid phase separation and crystallization in the polymer blend. The time-dependent structural evolution extracted from the SAXS/WAXS/DSC results can be characterized by the following four stages in the PCL crystallization process: the induction (I), nucleation (II), growth (III), and late (IV) stages. The influence of the liquid-liquid phase separation on the crystallization of PCL was also observed by phase-contrast microscope and polarized microscope with 1/4$\lambda$ compensator.

A PWM inverter with an induction motor often has a problem with a high frequency leakage current that flows through stray capacitors between stator windings and a motor frame to ground. This paper presents an equivalent circuit for high frequency leakage currents in PWM inverter feeding an induction motor, which forms an LCR series resonant circuit, A conventional common mode ckoke or reactor in series between the ac terminals of a PWM inverter and those of an ac motor is not effective to reduce the rms and average values of the leakage current, but effective to reduce the peak value Furthermore, this paper proposes a leakage current damper which is different in damping principle from the conventional common mode choke. It is shown theoretically and experimentally that the leakage current damper is able to reduce the rms value of the leakage current to 25%, where the core used in the leakage current damper si smaller than that of the conventional common-mode choke.
