The aim of the present study was to document the process of Long-term Athlete Development (LTAD) adoption by Canadian sport coaches, and to identify predictors of: 1) their attitude and intention to adopt such a social innovation, and 2) their LTAD adoption level. Using Rogers’ innovation diffusion theory, a survey of 499 Canadian coaches was conducted to identify the factors associated with three variables: coaches’ attitude towards LTAD, intention to adopt LTAD, and LTAD adoption status. 279 (56%)(35.4 ± 12.1 years) of them knew LTAD and filled out the entire questionnaire. Perceived knowledge of LTAD, its trialability, observability, intention to adopt, coaches’ certification level, and organisational support were the best predictors of LTAD model adoption level in coaching’ practice (R2=0.579, F9,184=28.32, p<0.001). Coaches in late-developing sports declared having greater knowledge of LTAD, more capacity for its implementation, and lower perceived complexity of application.

Introduction: Although sport identity is a notion widely used in the literature to explain one’s attachment to the athletic role, a few valid psychometric tools exist in French to measure such notion. Objective: Validation of a French version of Anderson’s (2004) Athletic Identity Questionnaire (AIQ) for a Québec French-speaking population. Method: Participants (n = 389) completed the French version of the AIQ and were athletes, former athletes and non-athletes. Exploratory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were used to examine model structure, whereas ANOVAS helped determine construct validity regarding athletic status. Results: A four factor first order structure emerged, as well as a second order structure composed of three of the four original facets. Significant differences for all four scales across the three groups appeared. Conclusion: AIQ-French is a valid psychometric tool which can measure different degrees of athletic identity best represented jointly by the importance, appearance and competence scales.

In most sports which are age-grouped annually, players born in the early part of a grouping period are more frequently found in subsequent categories over others from their cohort. This phenomenon is called the relative age effect (RAE). The goal of this research is to determine the impact of shifting the eligibility period on the RAE in elite minor ice hockey players in Quebec. From 2002 to 2008, the reference date for allocating categories began October 1. In 2008, it was moved back to January 1. The RAE is reported for 6 seasons, 3 before and 3 after the reference cut-off date was moved back to January 1. Data from the 2005-2006 to 2010-2011 seasons were available for 13,982 minor ice hockey players. The RAE was present in each season before and after the reference date shift in 2008, as indicated by a significant over-representation of players from the 1st quarter of each competitive year whether it began October 1 or January 1. As an example, players born in the first trimester (October to December) of the eligibility year 2007-2008 represented 44.94 % of all Midget AAA players. After the shift, players from the first trimester (now January to March) of the 2010-2011 season were representing 41.57 % of all Midget AAA players and players from the fourth quarter (now October to December) were representing 12.16 %. Results confirmed the presence of a RAE in elite minor ice hockey whatever the beginning of the eligibility period. The RAE is a robust phenomenon and its impact is re-established rather rapidly when the cut-off date is changed.

The purpose was to examine improvements of performance and different physiological parameters in ten trained male cross-country mountain bikers after a supra-maximal interval training (SMIT) program of 8 sessions. Each session comprised 60 to 90 repeated 1-minute bouts consisting of a 20-s effort at 115% of maximal aerobic power (MAP), followed by 40-s recovery at 50% of MAP. Performance time to complete the virtual time-trial performance test was reduced significantly by -4.2%. Pulmonary sub-maximal oxygen consumption and deoxyhemoglobin in vastus lateralis decreased significantly by .4.7% and -21.9% respectively during the MAP test. Our findings suggest that SMIT program might improve performance and cycling efficiency in XC mountain bikers.
Deoxy[Hb+Mb] increases consistently up to peak oxygen consumption in elite cyclists

This study aimed to compare deoxygenation in the vastus lateralis in the skeletal muscle microvasculature of nine world-class/elite (WC/E) vs. thirty-one well-trained/trained (T) cyclists by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) during a maximal aerobic power (MAP) test. Interaction analysis showed that 1st degree polynomial trends across % peak oxygen consumption (%VO2peak) differed significantly between WC/E and T cyclists on deoxygenated hemoglobin-myoglobin (Δ[HHb]) and on total hemoglobin-myoglobin (Δ[THb]) from 70 to 100% of VO2peak. These results show that the linear slopes of these trends were different. Near-plateau of Δ[HHb] was observed in T cyclists, whereas a consistent increase up to VO2peak was seen in WC/E cyclists. The Δ[THb] curve declined in T cyclists suggesting that blood volume in the vastus lateralis microcirculation decreases from 70 to 100% of VO2peak whereas it increases slowly but continuously to 95% of VO2peak in WC/E cyclists. The results of this study showed that deoxygenation in the vastus lateralis increases consistently up to VO2peak in WC/E cyclists and seems to be influenced by blood volume in the microcirculation.
