        Cross-protective efficacy of the O1 Manisa + O 3039 bivalent vaccine and the O 3039 monovalent vaccine against heterologous challenge with FMDV O/Jincheon/SKR/2014 in pig

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>After massive foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks originated from Jincheon County from Dec. 2014 to Apr. 2015, the effectiveness of the previous FMD vaccine containing only the O1 Manisa as the O antigen, O1 Manisa + A Malaysia 97 + Asia 1 Sharmir trivalent vaccine, was questioned in South Korea, and a change in the O antigen in FMD vaccines was demanded to control the FMD caused by FMDV O/Jincheon/SKR/2014, the O Jincheon strain. Therefore, the efficacies of O1 Manisa + O 3039 bivalent vaccine and O 3039 monovalent vaccine were studied for cross-protection against heterologous challenge with the O Jincheon strain. In this study, the efficacy of the O1 Manisa + O 3039 bivalent vaccine was better than that of the O 3039 monovalent vaccine, even though the serological relationship (r<SUB>1</SUB> value) between O Jincheon and O 3039 was matched according to the OIE Terrestrial Manual. According to serological test results from vaccinated specific pathogen free pigs, virus neutralization test titers against Jincheon were good estimates for predicting protection against challenge. A field trial of the O1 Manisa + O 3039 bivalent vaccine was performed to estimate the possibility of field application in conventional pig farms, especially due to concerns about the effect of maternally derived antibodies (MDA) in field application of the FMD vaccine. According to the result of the field trial, the O1 Manisa + O 3039 bivalent vaccine was considered to overcome MDA. The results of the efficacy and field trials indicated that the O1 Manisa + O3039 vaccine could be suitable to replace previous FMD vaccines to control the FMD field situation caused by O Jincheon FMDV.</P>

        Effects of Beta-glucan from Coriolus versicolor on Scavenger Receptor B1 Expression and their Involvement of Dectin-1 and Casein Kinase 2

        The mushroom Coriolusversicolor contains biologically active polysaccharides, most of which belong to the ${\beta}$ glucan group. Diverse physicochemical properties, due to different sources and isolated types of ${\beta}$-glucans, may induce distinct biological activities. Here, we examined the effects of ${\beta}$-glucan from Coriolusversicolor (CVG) on the scavenger receptor B1 (SR-B1) expression and the role of SR-B1 in CVG-induced phagocytosis regulation by using SR-B1-specific shRNA transfected cells. We also examined whether Dectin-1 and CK2 are involved in SR-B1 expression in CVG-treated cells. Our study results showed that CVG increased the SR-B1 expression via Dectin-1 and CK2 in macrophages. However, the inhibition of SR-B1 expression by shRNA did not completely eliminate the effect of CVG on the increase of phagocytosis suggesting that SR-B1 is not essential for CVG-stimulated phagocytosis. This study will contribute to identify CVG's mechanism of action and its use in the development of functional foods.

        Fabrication of Microgratings and their IR Diffraction Spectra

        Microgratings whose diffracted field at a fixed angle generate IR spectra of $SF_6$ or $NH_3$ were fabricated by MEMS techniques for the purpose of IR correlation spectroscopy. Each micrograting was composed of 1441 reflecting lines in the area of $19.2{\times}19.2mm^2$. The depth profile of the line elements was determined with a gradient searching method that was described in our previous publication (J. Mod. Opt. 2013, 60, 324-330), and was discretized into 16 levels between 0 and $6.90{\mu}m$. The diffraction field from a given depth profile was calculated with Fraunhofer equation. The fabricated microgratings showed errors in the depth and the width within acceptable ranges. As the result, the diffracted IR spectrum of each micrograting matched well with its target reference spectrum within spectral resolution of our optical setup.

        Long-term catalytic durability in Z-scheme CdS@ 1T-WS2 heterojunction materials

        This study aimed to improve the long-term durability of CdS catalysts by reducing the deterioration ofcatalytic activity caused by photocorrosion. An ultrathin 1T-WS2 2D nanosheet was introduced to enclosethe CdS nanorods. The crystal defects in the wrapped CdS particles were reduced, and the WS2 sheetbecame thinner in the junction particle. The 2CdS@1WS2 junction particle exhibited the slowest decaytime of the photoluminescence curve, and the photocurrent density increased by more than 3.5-fold inthe junction particle than the single CdS particle. Eventually, the optimized 2CdS@1WS2 catalyst exhibiteda high rate of H2 production of 3935 lmol g 1h 1 under simulated solar light irradiation with aquantum efficiency of 50%. Although the recycling experiment was repeated over 10 times using the2CdS@1WS2 junction particle, the produced hydrogen amount did not decrease. This result is becauseCdS nanorods wrapped stably by the ultrathin WS2 nanosheets, which suppressed the photocorrosionof CdS, and furthermore, the 1T phase WS2 rapidly attracted photogenerated electrons from CdS, facilitatingcharge separation and inhibiting their recombination, thereby improving the catalyst activity. Finally,it was revealed that an effective Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism in the CdS@1T-WS2 junction particlefollows during water splitting.

      • Biodegradable Nanoporous Films as an Enabling Strategy for Design and Fabrication of Food Packaging Systems

        Nanoscale manufacturing has enabled the development of smart packaging systems for the functional and convenient distribution of food products, overcoming the major bottlenecks to the future fabrication of stable, safe, economically feasible, and environmentally friendly food packaging systems. For example, nanotechnology can provide more functions of packaging systems to maintain, preserve, and sustain food products. In this work, we proposed a national design of biodegradable packaging nanoporous films (PNFs) to improve food quality preservation using polycaprolactone (PCL), biodegradable polymer, in combination with the nanofabrication technique. As a model study, we stored tomatoes with PCL PNFs in room and refrigerated temperature, respectively. Compared to conventional packaging films (i.e., polystyrene films), the PCL PNFs could retain the intact appearances of tomatoes. We also showed the higher mechanical property of tomatoes stored with the PCL PNFs than that of tomatoes with conventional packaging films, suggesting that the PCL PNFs could maintain food quality owing to probably the unique nanopore properties. We believe that biodegradable nanoporous films may be used as a new strategy to design smart food packaging systems for improving food quality preservation.

        Improving Computational Thinking Comprehension through Visualized Sorting App Development

        Computational thinking refers to the process and method of solving everyday problems using computers. When teaching a computational thinking class for computer majors and non-majors at university, the easiest example to deliver the concept of computational thinking is sorting. Sorting is the concept of arranging given data in order. In this work, we have implemented four visualized sorting algorithms that anyone can easily use. In particular, it helps to understand the difference between the algorithms by showing the number of comparisons and exchanges between elements, which are the criteria for evaluating the performance of the sorting algorithm in real time. It was confirmed that the practice of using the sorting visualization app developed in this research contributed to the improvement of students' understanding of computational thinking.

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>This paper presents a method for securing collaborative design using multi-level modeling. When a team of designers works collaboratively on a 3D assembly model, a component of the assembly is presented in a full detail to those who have full access privileges to the component, but in an abstract level of detail to those who have less access privileges. Such various levels of detail can be created in two phases: volumetric feature removal which is achieved through interactive feature recognition on the CAD model, and multi-resolution mesh construction which is based on polygonal simplification. Appropriate representations of the assembly are extracted by direction of access matrix, and then presented to the users participating in collaborative design. The key issues in developing the secure collaborative design system are discussed, and the implementation results are reported.</P>

        Considerable drag reduction and fuel saving of a tractor–trailer using additive aerodynamic devices

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The drag reduction of commercial vehicles is the principal challenge to improving fuel saving and decreasing air pollution. Accordingly, several flow control devices, including gap fairing, cab roof fairing, boat tail, and side skirt were introduced to reduce the aerodynamic drag exerted on heavy vehicles. Although such devices have exhibited good drag reduction performance, their aerodynamic performance can be improved further. Moreover, a comprehensive and systematic research is required, including drag force measurement, flow field analysis and real-scale proving ground test, to evaluate the fuel consumption of heavy vehicles. In this study, the drag reduction effect of the aero full package (AFP) of a tractor–trailer, which integrated gap fairing, flap-type side skirt and lower inclined air deflector boat tail, was investigated through wind tunnel experiments and proving ground test. On the basis of the results of drag and PIV measurement, the integrated AFP was found to significantly modify the flow structure around the vehicle, thereby leading to a 26.5% reduction in drag coefficient compared with the reference tractor-trailer model (<I>C</I> <SUB> <I>D</I> </SUB> = 0.693). Furthermore, the proving ground test using real tractor–trailer verified that the integrated AFP provides 13.4% fuel saving. The present results will provide practical information for improving the aerodynamic performance and fuel efficiency of heavy vehicles.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The aero full package for tractor-trailer consist of gap fairing, flap-type side skirt and LIAD boat tail was newly proposed. </LI> <LI> The aero full package reduces drag coefficient up to 26.5% compared with reference tractor-trailer. </LI> <LI> The flow structures around tractor-trailer model is revealed through PIV experiments. </LI> <LI> Real-scale proving ground test confirmed 13.4% fuel saving with the aero full package. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Flexible and Biodegradable Nanoporous Films for Application in Active Food Packaging Systems

        Nanotechnology has facilitated the development of active food packaging systems with functions that could not be achieved by their traditional counterparts. Such smart and active systems can improve the shelf life of perishable products and overcome major bottlenecks associated with the fabrication of safe and environmentally friendly food packaging systems. Herein, we used a plasma-enabled surface modification strategy to fabricate biodegradable and flexible nanoporous polycaprolactone-based (FNP) films for food packaging systems. Their capacity for preserving tomatoes, tangerines, and bananas at room and refrigeration temperatures was tested by analyzing various fruit parameters (mold generation, appearance changes, freshness, weight loss, firmness, and total soluble solids contents). Compared with commonly used polyethylene terephthalate-based containers, the proposed system enhanced the fruit storage quality (i.e., retained appearance, reduced weight loss, better firmness, and sugar contents) by controlling moisture evaporation and inhibiting mold generation. Thus, the FNP film represents a new active food packaging strategy.
