Vital Pulp Therapy Using Platelet-Rich Fibrin in an immature Permanent Tooth: Case Reports

        Ka-Young Lee,Sang-Ho Lee,Nan-Young Lee 大韓小兒齒科學會 2013 大韓小兒齒科學會誌 Vol.40 No.2

Preserving the pulp is important in the treatment of carious pulp exposure in young permanent teeth. Pulpotomy is a vital pulp therapy in which a portion of the coronal pup tissue is surgically removed, and the remaining radicular tissue is covered with suitable material that protects the pulp from further injury and permits and promotes healing. It is important to develop biocompatible treatment directed at maintaining pulp vitality and increasing tooth longevity. Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) has been referred to as a second-generation platelet concentrate. Two clinical cases in which PRF was applied as a medicament after pulpotomy of an immature permanent tooth anre presented. After isolation, caries removal and pulpotomy with PRF was performed. A layer of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) was placed over the PRF, and the final restoration was performed. Postoperatively, the patient had no pain or discomfort, and follow-up radiographs revealed normal periodontal ligament space and trabecular bone pattern.

      • Protective effects of Cambodian medicinal plants on tert-butyl hydroperoxide-induced hepatotoxicity via Nrf2-mediated heme oxygenase-1

        Lee, Dong-Sung,Keo, Samell,Cheng, Sun-Kaing,Oh, Hyuncheol,Kim, Youn-Chul SPANDIDOS PUBLICATIONS 2017 MOLECULAR MEDICINE REPORTS Vol. No.

Liver diseases are considered to be primary contributors to morbidity and mortality rates in humans. Oxidative stress is critical in liver injury, and oxidant-induced liver injury may be caused by toxins, including tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHP). The present study investigated the hepatoprotective activities of 64 crude ethanol extracts of Cambodian medicinal plants against t-BHP-induced cytotoxicity in human liver-derived HepG2 cells, and assessed their cytoprotective mechanism pertaining to the expression of heme oxygenase (HO)-1 and nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). Protective effects in HepG2 cells were determined by MTT assay. Protein expression levels of HO-1 and Nrf2 were determined by western blotting and mRNA expression levels were determined by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Of the 64 extracts, 19 extracts exhibited high hepatoprotective activities: Ampelocissus martini, Bauhinia bracteata, Bombax ceiba, Borassus flabellifer, Cardiospermum halicacabum, Cayratia trifolia, Cinnamomurn caryophyllus, Cyperus rotundus, Dasymaschalon lomentaceum, Ficus benjamina, Mangifera duperreana, Morinda citrifolia, Pandanus humilis, Peliosanthes weberi, Phyllanthus emblica, Quisqualis indica, Smilax glabra, Tinospora crispa and Willughbeia cochinchinensis, with half maximal effective concentrations ranging between 59.23 and 157.80 mu g/ml. Further investigations revealed that, of these 19 extracts, HO-1 and Nrf2 were expressed in P. weberi and T. crispa expressed in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, the activities of reactive oxygen species were suppressed following treatment of these

Comparison of Bile Drainage Methods after Laparoscopic CBD Exploration

        Ka-Jeong Kim,Chi-Young Jeong,Sang-Ho Jeong,Young-Tae Ju,Eun-Jung Jung,Young-Joon Lee,Sang-Kyung Choi,Woo-song Ha,Soon-Tae Park,Soon-Chan Hong 한국간담췌외과학회 2011 한국간담췌외과학회지 Vol.15 No.2

Purpose: T-tube is a major procedure that prevents complication by biliary decompression, but which is accompanied by complications. Therefore, several procedures such as ENBD, PTBD, and antegrade biliary stent have been attempted, but with controversies as to which procedure is superior. Also, there are no standard procedures after laparoscopic CBD exploration. We performed this study to ascertain the most appropriate biliary drainage procedure after laparoscopic CBD exploration. Methods: From March 2001 to December 2009, 121 patients who underwent Laparoscopic CBD exploration in Gunyang University were included for retrospective analysis. The patients were divided to 4 groups according to type of procedure, and we compared clinical parameters including age and gender, operation time, hospital stay, start of post-operative diet, and complications. Results: There was no difference in age, gender, mean operation time, postoperative diet between the 4 groups. Hospital stay in the Stent group was shorter than T-tube group. There were 10 (7%) complications that occurred. Two 2 occurred in the T-tube, 3 in PTBD, and 5 in the Antegrade stent group. There were more complications in Stent group but no significant statistical difference. In 5 cases with remnant CBD stone, a total of 4 (3 PTBD, 1 Stent) was performed by endoscopic CBD stone removal. One T-tube case was removed easily by choledochoscopy through the T-tube. Three migrated and the impacted stents were removed by additional endoscopy. Perioperative biliary leakage (1) and peritonitis (1) post t-tube removal were resolved by conservative treatment Conclusion: T-tube appears to be an appropriate method to patients who are suspected to have remnant CBD stones. Multiple procedures may be performed on a case by case basis such as performing PTBD first in a suspected cholangitis patient.

Expression of ssrA in non-pathogen-induced adaptation in the oral cavity through signal exchange with oral pathogens

        Sung-Ryoul Kim,Jae-Woo Kwak,Sung-Ka Lee,Seung-Gon Jung,Man-Seung Han,Bang-Sin Kim,Min-Suk Kook,Hee-Kyun Oh,Hong-Ju Park 대한구강악안면외과학회 2012 대한구강악안면외과학회지 Vol.38 No.1

Introduction: This study was conducted to evaluate ssrA expression resulting from adaptation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) to oral pathogens through signal exchange. Materials and Methods: Human cell lines Hep2 and HT29, wild-type E. coli (WT K-12), ssrA knock-out E. coli (Δ K-12), and Scleropages aureus (S. aureus) were used. A single culture consisting of Hep2, HT29, WT K-12, and Δ K-12, and mixed cultures consisting of Hep2 and WT K-12, Hep2 and Δ K-12, WT K-12 and S. aureus, Δ K-12 and S. aureus, and Hep2, WT K-12, and S. aureus were prepared. For HT29, a mixed culture was prepared with WT K-12 and with WT K-12 and S. aureus. Total RNA was extracted from each culture with the resulting expression of ssrA, nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB), and p53 was evaluated by Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results: The expression of ssrA in a single culture of WT K-12 was lower than that observed in the mixed culture of WT K-12 with S. aureus. Greater ssrA expression was observed in the mixed culture of WT K-12 with Hep2 than in the single culture of WT K-12. The expression of NF-κB was higher in the mixed culture of Hep2 with Δ K-12 than that in the mixed culture of Hep2 with WT K-12, and was lowest in the single culture of Hep2. The expression of ssrA was higher in the mixed culture of WT K-12 with Hep2 and S. aureus than in the mixed culture of WT K-12 with Hep2. Conclusion: These results suggest that ssrA plays an important role in the mechanism of E. coli adaptation to a new environment.

Structural, electrical and optical properties of sol–gel AZO thin films

Ka Eun Lee,Mingsong Wang,Eui Jung Kim,Sung Hong Hahn 한국물리학회 2009 Current Applied Physics Vol.9 No.3

Transparent conductive Al-doped zinc oxide (AZO) thin films were prepared by a sol–gel method and their structural, electrical and optical properties were systematically investigated. A minimum resistivity of 4.2 × 10-3 Ωcm was obtained for the 650 ℃-annealed films doped with 1.0 at.% Al. All films had the preferential c-axis oriented texture according to the X-ray diffraction (XRD) results. Optical transmittance spectra of the films showed a high transmittance of over 85% in the visible region and the optical band gap of the AZO films broadened with increasing doping concentration. Pancreatic Diabetes after Distal Pancreatectomy

        Ka-Jeong Kim,Chi-Young Jeong,Sang-Ho Jeong,Young-Tae Ju,Eun-Jung Jung,Young-Joon Lee,Sang-Kyung Choi,Woo-song Ha,Soon-Tae Park,Soon-Chan Hong 한국간담췌외과학회 2011 한국간담췌외과학회지 Vol.15 No.2

Purpose: Pancreatectomy can impair production of endocrine and exocrine hormones. In this study, we evaluated: 1) the incidence rate of diabetes in patients undergoing distal pancreatectomy; 2) the correlation between the occurrence of pancreatic diabetes and the extent of the resected pancreas; and 3) factors associated with the development of pancreatic diabetes. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the cases of 26 patients who could be compared in abdominal computed tomography before and after distal pancreatectomy for benign or malignant lesions between January, 1999 to June, 2010. Results: The incidence of pancreatic diabetes was 19.2%. Obese patients (BMI>25.0 kg/m2) had a higher incidence (p=0.029) of pancreatic diabetes after distal pancreatectomy than non-obese patients. The diabetes group had larger volumes of resected pancreas, but the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.105). Conclusion: Several factors may be associated with the development of pancreatic diabetes after distal pancreatectomy. It is necessary to closely follow-up development of pancreatic diabetes regardless of the extent of resection

In vitro development and cell allocation of porcine blastocysts derived by aggregation of in vitro fertilized embryos

        Lee, Sang-Goo,Park, Chi-Hun,Choi, Don-Ho,Kim, Hye-Sun,Ka, Hak-Hyun,Lee, Chang-Kyu JOHN WILEY & SONS LTD 2007 MOLECULAR REPRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT Vol.74 No.11

In pigs, the morphology and cell number of in vitro-produced blastocysts are inferior to those of their in vivo counterparts. The objective of this study was to increase developmental competence and to gain an understanding of cell allocation in blastocysts derived from the aggregation of four-cell stage porcine embryos produced in vitro. After removal of the zona pellucida, two (2×) and three (3×) four-cell stage embryos were aggregated by co-culturing them in aggregation plates. Five days after aggregation, the developmental ability and the number of cells in the aggregated embryos were determined. The percentage of blastocysts was higher (P < 0.05) in both the 2× and 3× aggregated embryos (66.6% and 72.0%, respectively) compared to that of the 1× embryos and the intact controls (43.1% and 36.4%, respectively). The total cell number of blastocysts also increased in aggregated embryos compared to that of intact controls (2.6-fold for 2× and 3.4-fold for 3×) (P < 0.05). The cells of two differentially stained embryos were started to mix at 72 hr after aggregation. In vitro-fertilized porcine aggregates (2×) were developed to blastocyst with a random distribution of cells from each embryo. The mRNA levels for the oct-4, bcl-xL and connexin 43 genes were higher (P < 0.05) and bak gene were lower (P < 0.05) in both the 2× and 3× aggregated embryos than the intact controls. Therefore, the aggregation of the four-cell stage embryos could be used to improve the quality of porcine preimplantation stage embryos produced in vitro. Mol. Reprod.
