        Grain boundaries in policrystalline alloys play an important role on the deformation and its strength. It is necessary that a complete understanding of the effect of grain boundary on the deformation, in order to put these alloys into the best utilization. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of grain boundaries on the deformation of (α+β) two phase brass polycrystalline. For this study, grains of specimens were coarsened to simplify the complicate grain boundary. After tensile deformation, slip line analysis near grain boundary was accomplished. Schmid factor, stress delivering factor and strain incompatibility were introduced in the explanation of present results. The activation of slip system which was affected by the grain boundary itself were explained by the combination of these factors. Also, it was introduced that the properties of strain incompatibility depend on the condition of grain boundaries and tensile axis.

      • Harnessing an RNA-mediated chaperone for the assembly of influenza hemagglutinin in an immunologically relevant conformation

        <P>A novel protein-folding function of RNA has been recognized, which can outperform previously known molecular chaperone proteins. The RNA as a molecular chaperone (chaperna) activity is intrinsic to some ribozymes and is operational during viral infections. Our purpose was to test whether influenza hemagglutinin (HA) can be assembled in a soluble, trimeric, and immunologically activating conformation by means of an RNA molecular chaperone (chaperna) activity. An RNA-interacting domain (RID) from the host being immunized was selected as a docking tag for RNA binding, which served as a transducer for the chaperna function for <I>de novo</I> folding and trimeric assembly of RID-HA1. Mutations that affect tRNA binding greatly increased the soluble aggregation defective in trimer assembly, suggesting that RNA interaction critically controls the kinetic network in the folding/assembly pathway. Immunization of mice resulted in strong hemagglutination inhibition and high titers of a neutralizing antibody, providing sterile protection against a lethal challenge and confirming the immunologically relevant HA conformation. The results may be translated into a rapid response to a new influenza pandemic. The harnessing of the novel chaperna described herein with immunologically tailored antigen-folding functions should serve as a robust prophylactic and diagnostic tool for viral infections.—Yang, S.       • Dibenzothiopheno[6,5-<i>b</i>:6′,5′-<i>f</i>]thieno[3,2-<i>b</i>]thiophene (DBTTT): High-Performance Small-Molecule Organic Semiconductor for Field-Effect Transistors

        <P>We present the synthesis, characterization, and structural analysis of a thiophene-rich heteroacene, dibenzothiopheno[6,5-b:6',5'-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DBTTT) as well as its application in field-effect transistors. The design of DBTTT is based on the enhancement of intermolecular charge transfer through strong S-S interactions. Crystal structure analysis showed that the intermolecular pi-pi distance is shortened and that the packing density is higher than those of the electronically equivalent benzene analogue, dinaphtho-[2,3-b:2',3'f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DNTT). The highest hole mobility we obtained in polycrystalline DBTTT thin-film transistors was 19.3 cm(2).V-1.s(-1), six times higher than that of DNTT-based transistors. The observed isotropic angular mobilities and thermal stabilities at temperatures up to 140 degrees C indicate the great potential of DBTTT for attaining device uniformity and processability.</P>

      • Roles of Cancer Registries in Enhancing Oncology Drug Access in the Asia-Pacific Region

        Cancer registries help to establish and maintain cancer incidence reporting system, serve as a resource for investigation of cancer and its causes, and provide information for planning and evaluation of preventive and control programs. However, their wider role in directly enhancing oncology drug access has not been fully explored. We examined the value of cancer registries in oncology drug access in the Asia-Pacific region on three levels: (1) specific registry variable types; (2) macroscopic strategies on the national level; and (3) a regional cancer registry network. Using literature search and proceedings from an expert forum, this paper covers recent cancer registry developments in eight economies in the Asia-Pacific region - Australia, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand - and the ways they can contribute to oncology drug access. Specific registry variables relating to demographics, tumor characteristics, initial treatment plans, prognostic markers, risk factors, and mortality help to anticipate drug needs, identify high-priority research area and design access programs. On a national level, linking registry data with clinical, drug safety, financial, or drug utilization databases allows analyses of associations between utilization and outcomes. Concurrent efforts should also be channeled into developing and implementing data integrity and stewardship policies, and providing clear avenues to make data available. Less mature registry systems can employ modeling techniques and ad-hoc surveys while increasing coverage. Beyond local settings, a cancer registry network for the Asia-Pacific region would offer cross-learning and research opportunities that can exert leverage through the experiences and capabilities of a highly diverse region.

        황해산 참조기(Pseudosciaena polyactis Bleeker) 의 mitochondrial DNA 분석

        黃海에 서식하는 참조기(Pseudosciaena polyactis Bleeker) 각 계군의 遺傳的 差異點을 분석하기 위하여 중국에서 3지역(Zhoushan, Shanghai, Qingdao), 한국 2지역(목포, 인천)에서 채집된 참조기로부터 mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA)의 RFLP(制限酵素 切片 多型現象)를 분석하였다. 총 18종의 制限酵素를 이용하여 처리한 결과 5개 집단 모두 동일한 크기인 16.9±0.6 kb의 mtDNA를 소유한 것으로 나타났으며 이는 다른 魚類群들과 유사한 크기였다. 참조기 mtDNA에 대한 RFLP 분석을 행한 결과 각 집단마다 대략 40여개의 절편이 관찰되었고 5개 집단 모두 동일한 mtDNA 切片樣相을 보였으나 사용된 제한효소 중 Apal, EcoRI, PstI, SstII 및 SmaI에서 중국과 한국 집단내 또는 집단간 절편 양상의 차이도 관찰할 수 있었다. To investigate the population differences of small yellow croaker (Pseudosciaena polyactis BLEEKER) in the Yellow Sea, five catching sites (three from China; Zoushan, Shanghai and Qingdao, two from Korea; Inchon and Mokpo) were selected for sampling. The populations of small yellow croaker from all five catching sites were investigated to analyze their mtDNA's restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) using 18 kinds of restriction enzymes. The average molecular size of the entire mtDNA was estimated at 16.9±0.6 kb. According to the results of RFLP analysis, a total of 40 restriction sites were identified in every population surveyed and the overall cleavage patterns of mtDNA, based on the RFLP, showed similar tendencies. However, the five restriction enzymes such as Apal, EcoRI, PstI, SmaI and SstⅡ showed slightly different cleavage patterns which could have resulted from individual variations between the populations of Korea and China.

        황해산 참조기(Pseudosciaena polyactis) 의 계군 분석을 위한 분자생물학적 방법 검정

        황해서식 참조기(Pseudosciaena polyactis)에 대한 계군을 분석하기 위한 연구의 일환으로 우선 황해의 목포 연근해에서 채집된 참조기의 난자와 근육으로 부터 mt-DNA와 근육 actin을 추출하였다. 난자의 경우 mt-DNA를 추출한 뒤 제한효소로 처리하여 절편다형현상을 관찰하였으며 근육 actin의 경우 단백질 분해효소(Staphylococcus aureus V_8 protease)로 처리하여 N-terminal 절편의 다형현상을 각각 관찰하였다. Mt-DNA의 genome 크기는 약 16 ± 0.2 Kb였고 전체 절편수는 37개였으며 사용된 20개의 제한효소중 8개의 제한효소만이 3개 정도의 절편을 보이므로써 유의성을 관찰할 수 있었다. 한편 근육 actin을 Staphylococcus aureus V_8 단백질 분해효소로 처리하였을 때 N-terminal 부위에서 26 KDa 및 16 KDa의 분자량을 갖는 특이절편을 관찰할 수 있었다. The stock identification of small yellow croaker, Pseudosciaena polyactis from Mokpo area was carried out using molecular biological methods such as mt-DNA restriction fragment length polymorphism(RFLP) and the N-terminal fragment polymorphism of muscle actin obtained after protease digestion. The entire mt-DNA genomic size from the small yellow croaker at Mokpo area was estimated to be about 16 ± 0.2 Kb. Furthermore, fourteen restriction endonucleases revealed a total of 37 restriction sites to the mt-DNA molecule, however, eight of the fourteen enzymes showed a significant restriction site variation. Six of the enzymes examined produced a single restriction profile for all individuals surveyed, indicating that they don't react on the same mt-DNA obtained from small yellow croaker. The Staphylococcus aureus V_8 protease is able to cleave the muscle actin of small yellow croaker and to yield a N-terminal peptide of 26 and 16 KDa, respectively.

        A New Variable Refrigerant Flow System Simulation Approach in EnergyPlus

        A variable refrigerant °ow (VRF) system is widely applied to build air conditioning systems. Literature review of previous VRF modeling studies was conducted, and it was found that the current calculation approach in EnergyPlus can result in more than 20% deviation in both heat transfer capacity and power consumption. Therefore, a new VRF model is proposed in this study, which includes an improved thermal zone distribution concept, new indoor unit types, and a new thermodynamic model. The developed model is validated with experimental data within 10% in heat transfer capacity and 5% in power consumption. Based on the proposed model, the operation control strategy is also discussed. The results show that the proposed model could also simulate the current control strategy in the VRF system.

      • ‘언엔딩(Un-ending)’활동 참여에 따른 무용 대중화 인식 및 참여 지속성

        본 연구는 다양한 무용 대중화 프로젝트를 진행하고 있는 언엔딩 단체의 활동에 참여한 비전공 대학생을 중심으로 무용에 대한 인식과 참여 지속성에 대해 탐색하는 것에 목적이 있다. 이에 따라 언엔딩 활동에 참여한 비전공대학생 10명을 대상으로 1:1 심층면담을 실시하였으며, 자료 분석 방법으로는 귀납적 범주화를 통한 다각도 분석방법을 적용하여 연구결과에 대한 타당도를 높였다. 연구결과 첫째, 언엔딩 활동 참여 전 연구 참여자들은 무용을 ‘전문적인 예술’, ‘폐쇄적인 예술’, ‘비대중적 예술’ 등으로 인식하고 있었다. 그러나 언엔딩 활동 참여 후에는 무용을 ‘재미있는 예술’, ‘대중적 예술’, ‘매력적인 예술’로 답함으로써 인식의 변화를 보여주었다. 즉 무용 활동 경험은 무용을 난해하고 어렵게만 생각했던 기존의 인식을 변화시키는 계기가 되었고, 춤이 갖고 있는 고유성을 직접 체화한 것으로 파악되었다. 둘째, 향후 무용활동 참여에 대한 질문에서는 ‘취미 생활로서의 영위’, ‘스펙 향상’, ‘행복감 증진’을 위하여 지속적으로 무용 활동에 참여할 것으로 답하였다. 그러나 대부분의 연구 참여자들이 언엔딩과 같은 형식의 무용 활동일 경우에만 참여할 의사를 밝혔다. The purpose of this study is to explore the perception of dance and the continuity of participation, focusing on non-major college students who have participated in the activities of unending organizations that are conducting various dance popularization projects. As a result, 1: 1 in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 non-technical students who participated in the unending activity, and as a data analysis method, a multi-angle analysis method through inductive categorization was applied to increase the validity of the research results. Research Results First, before participating in the unending activity, participants in the study recognized dance as “professional art”, “closed art”, and “popular art”. However, after participating in the unending activity, they showed a change in perception by answering dance as “fun art”, “popular art”, or “attractive art”. In other words, the experience of dance activities was the opportunity to change the existing perception that dances were difficult and difficult, and was found to directly embody the uniqueness of dance. Second, in the question of participation in dance activities in the future, they answered that they would continue to participate in dance activities for ‘hobby as a hobby’, ‘improvement of specifications’ and ‘enhancement of happiness’. However, most of the study participants indicated their willingness to participate only in the form of dance activities such as unending.
