      • Mobile phone use and risk of glioma

        Objectives: There has been a growing concern about the possible carcinogenic effects of the electromagnetic radiofrequency fields emitted from mobile phones. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between mobile phone use and the development of gliomas in Korea. Methods: Our study methods were based on the International Interphone study that aimed to evaluate possible adverse effects of mobile phone use. This study included 285 histologically-confirmed Korean patients 15 to 69 years of age, with gliomas diagnosed between 2002 and 2007 in 9 hospitals. The 285 individually matched controls were healthy individuals that had their medical check-up in the same hospitals. Unconditional logistic regression was used to calculate the adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for use of mobile phones. Results: For the entire group, no significant relationship was investigated between gliomas and regular use of mobile phones, types of mobile phones, lifetime years of use, monthly service fee, and the other exposure indices. Analyses restricted to self-respondents showed similar results. For ipsilateral users, whose the body side for usual mobile phone use match the location of glioma, the aORs (95% CIs) for lifetime years of use and cumulative hours of use were 1.25 (0.55 to 2.88) and 1.77 (0.32 to 1.84), respectively. However, the contralateral users showed slightly lower risk than ipsilateral users. Conclusions: Our results do not support the hypothesis that the use of mobile phones increases the risk of glioma; however, we found a non-significant increase in risk among ipsilateral users. These findings suggest further evaluation for glioma risk among longterm mobile phone users.

        건설근로자의 안전 의식 실태 및 안전 보건 교육 개선에 관한 연구

        Purpose : This study is conducted to analyze the safe awarenece, its related health education and the employee``s requirements in a prime supplier and its subcontractor company, suggesting the proper measure in employee education program. Method : The employees of ``S`` construction company and its subcontractor are surveyed during the period of April 15 from May 15 in 2016. The 324 questionnaires are statistically analyzed with the version 21.0 of SPSS. The general characteristics were calculated through the frequency analysis and descriptive statistics. The difference in safe consciousness between prime and subcontractor employee group was analyzed using t-test. Result : The statistics shows the employees in the prime company tend to observe the safe rules rather than the subcontractor employees(p<.005), but the latter are more conscious of safety in working environment than the former(p<.005). In addition, the subcontractor company did not provide his employees with the site for the safety-health education. Conclusion : The small-sized subcontractor company should identify its employees`` requirements and supplement the lack of the safety and health education for the prevention of the industrial disasters. In details, the hand-on and practice-oriented leaning and teaching program development are suggested.

        <P>The design and development of new pyrene-based fluorescent probes, <B>P-Hcy-1</B> and <B>P-Hcy-2</B>, which display selective fluorescence enhancements in response to homocysteine (Hcy), are described. The distinctly different fluorescence responses of <B>P-Hcy-1</B> and <B>P-Hcy-2</B> to Hcy <I>vs.</I> Cys are explained by theoretical calculations.       • F-31 The prognosis of lung cancer in patient with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis according to treatment modality

        Background: There were evidences that IPF is one of the important risk factor of lung cancer (LC) and as time passes after the diagnosis of IPF. In this study, we aim to find out what treatments are associated with a better prognosis for LC patients with IPF. Method: From 2003 to 2016, a total of 299 patients with both IPF and LC were searched by the diagnostic name in the Seoul National University Bundang hospital. 168 patients were included in the analysis except for other form of ILD, infection (n=13), other malignancy (n=11), and missing data (n=102). Among the patients, 21 were conservative therapy, 66 were surgery, 69 were chemotherapy, and 6 were treated for radiation therapy as primary treatment. GAP score was calculated with gender, age, FVC, and DLCO as Ley et al. reported. Results: The average age was 69.9 years and the men were dominant (92.9%). The overall survival rate was high in surgery (p<0.001; HR, 0.144) and chemotherapy (p=0.046; HR, 0.487). Surgery (p=0.014; HR, 0.244) increased the survival rate in the lung cancer stage I, II, and IIIa, and chemotherapy (p<0.001; HR, 0.168) and surgery (p=0.003; HR, 0.033) improved the survival rate in the IIIb and IV, compared to the conservative care. The survival rate was improved by surgery (p<0.001; HR, 0.132) in GAP stage I and was increased by chemotherapy (p = 0.007; HR, 0.145) in stages II and III. Conclusion: Although the motality of IPF-associated LC is higher than lung cancer only, it seems to be effective for surgery or chemotherapy depending on the lung cancer or IPF stage.

        Recent progress on the development of glutathione (GSH) selective fluorescent and colorimetric probes

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Glutathione (GSH) plays a key role in many cellular functions. Abnormal levels of GSH is considered to be sign of many diseases. As a result, various fluorescent imaging probes and/or chemosensors for GSH have been developed. Compared to other analytical methods, fluorescence has unique merits, such as excellent detection limits and sensitivity for use in imaging cells, tissues and small animals. However, colorimetric probes undergo distinct color changes, which in most cases can be detected by using the naked eye. This review of studies aimed at the development of GSH probes is presented in a format that is organized by structural features and chemical reactions of the probes. The topics include probes that are based on nanoparticles or nanocomposites, metal ion displacement and coordination and chemical reactions. The reaction based probes are further classified into probes that undergo cleavage of sulphonamide, sulfonate ester and related functional groups, SeN bond cleavage, aryl substitution reactions, disulfide bond cleavage followed by cyclization, Michael additions, and other processes.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Fluorescent and colorimetric probes for GSH based on nanoparticles and small organic molecules are reviewed. </LI> <LI> Sensing mechanisms of GSH selective fluorescent and colorimetric probes are discussed. </LI> <LI> Probes for bioimaging GSH and applications to disease diagnosis. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Unprecedented colorimetric responses of polydiacetylenes driven by plasma induced polymerization and their patterning applications

        <P>We report for the first time that polydiacetylenes (PDAs) can be alternatively prepared <I>via</I> a plasma induced polymerization process.       • Polydiacetylenes Bearing Boronic Acid Groups as Colorimetric and Fluorescence Sensors for Cationic Surfactants

        <P>A new polydiacetylene oxyphenylboronic acid (<B>PDA-OPBA-1</B>) bearing group was synthesized and showed diverse colorimetric changes, such as yellow, orange, and red, upon the addition of cationic surfactants at pH 7.4. On the other hand, anionic surfactants and simple ammonium salts did not show any color change. Specifically, color changes to yellow for cetyl trimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), red for dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), orange for benzylcetyldimethylammonium chloride (BCDA), and dark orange for hexadecylpyridium bromide (HDPB) are observed, respectively.         신종 감염병 환자의 효율적 처치를 위한대형병원 응급실 관리요소의 중요도 도출

        Purpose: This study aimed to derive the elements for effectively improving the management of emerging infectious diseases in the emergency room in large general hospitals. Methods: This research involved an analytic hierarchy process analysis of 10 experienced nurses working in a large general hospital located in the Seoul metropolitan area. The weighted values of the criteria for evaluating the importance of the management elements of patients with emerging infectious diseases in the emergency room of large general hospitals were derived using an analytic hierarchy process survey. Results: The results of the analytic hierarchy process analysis showed that experts considers responsiveness (0.291) as most important with respect to the criteria for the policy for isolation and control of infectious patients. The order of importance of the criteria for the policy for isolation and control of infectious patients were as follows: responsiveness (0.291), economical efficiency (0.257), feasibility (0.242), and sustainability (0.209). Subsequently, the weighted values of the management of the policy elements were determined based on the derived importance of the criteria mentioned above. These were, in order of priority, the construction of communication channels with the government authorities when dealing with emerging infectious diseases (15.9%), the equipment and provision of personal protective equipment to protect nurses from infection and dissemination of material (14.6%), and the operation of the isolation room and patient separation systems (14.1%). Conclusion: This study suggests critical strategies for infection control during a pandemic of emerging infectious disease.
